England vs Scotland

The car park tailgate, the 82,000-seat fortress, the riverside pubs — English rugby at its grandest

Sun, 15 Mar 2026 Twickenham Stadium, London 3 days · arrive Sat, 14 Mar 2026

Twickenham Stadium is the largest dedicated rugby union stadium in the world with a capacity of 82,000. Its pre-match car park tailgate culture — where thousands of fans hold BBQ parties in the East car park from early morning — is entirely unique in rugby and barely known outside the sport. The stadium sits in affluent Richmond upon Thames, 12 miles southwest of central London, giving you a day trip to one of the most beautiful parts of the capital on either side of match day.

Your 3-day itinerary

1

Arrive in London, explore Richmond and Twickenham, settle in for the weekend

~$224

Morning

Fly into London Heathrow (LHR) or Gatwick (LGW)2–3 hours including transfer$22

Heathrow (LHR) is closest to Twickenham — the Elizabeth line or Piccadilly line reach Richmond in 45 minutes. From Gatwick, the Thameslink train to Richmond takes 65 minutes via London Bridge. If staying in central London, the overground from Waterloo to Twickenham runs every 30 minutes and takes 35 minutes.

💡 Buying an Oyster card or paying by contactless bank card is far cheaper than buying paper tickets on London's Tube and Overground. Add credit at the airport before your first journey.

Richmond town centre and Richmond Green1.5 hours

Richmond is one of London's most elegant outer boroughs — Georgian townhouses, independent shops, riverside cafés and the vast expanse of Richmond Green at its centre. The town is energised by rugby supporters on Six Nations weekends with a noticeably different atmosphere to central London: more relaxed, more outdoors, more Barbour jackets and scarves.

💡 The Tide café on George Street does excellent coffee. On match weekends, the outside tables fill with fans by 10am.

Afternoon

Twickenham Rugby Museum2 hours$28

The World Rugby Museum inside Twickenham Stadium is the most comprehensive rugby museum in existence. Housed beneath the East Stand, it covers the history of the game from its Rugby School origins through to the modern World Cup era, with extensive England memorabilia. The stadium tour (included with museum entry) takes you into the changing rooms and onto the pitch.

💡 The museum is closed on match days. Friday or Sunday are the only options. Book online to guarantee entry.

Thames Path walk from Twickenham to Richmond1.5 hours

The Thames Path runs for 2km between Twickenham Bridge and Richmond Bridge along the river — flat, beautiful and free. This stretch of the Thames has an almost rural quality: herons on the banks, rowing eights training, willows touching the water. Several excellent pubs along the way.

💡 The White Swan on Riverside in Twickenham is right on the river with an excellent terrace. Particularly good in the low afternoon sun.

Evening

Dinner and pints in Richmond or St Margarets2.5 hours$65

Richmond has an excellent restaurant scene for its size. The Dysart Petersham is acclaimed for its food but expensive; The Bingham Riverhouse brasserie is a good middle ground. For pub food, The Eel Pie on Church Street is a classic Twickenham riverside local. St Margarets (between Richmond and Twickenham) has excellent neighbourhood restaurants frequented by locals rather than tourists.

💡 Ma Cuisine in Kew (15 minutes by bus) is a tiny, exceptional French bistro — the best meal in the area at a fair price. Book well ahead.

Where to eat

Hotel breakfast or café on Richmond High Streetbreakfast· $16
Pub lunch along the Thames Pathlunch· $28
Dinner in Richmonddinner· $65

Hotel breakfast or café on Richmond High Street: A full English breakfast — the proper version with black pudding, baked beans and toast — is the correct way to fuel a Six Nations match weekend.

Pub lunch along the Thames Path: A Sunday roast or a ploughman's lunch (bread, cheese, pickle, apple) is quintessentially British. The White Swan does both well.

2

The East car park tailgate, Twickenham's world of noise, post-match Richmond pubs

~$342

Six Nations match at Twickenham Stadium. Typical kick-offs: 14:15 or 16:45 (Saturday), 15:00 (Sunday). The East car park opens at 9am for tailgate activities on match days.

Morning

Full English breakfast and early preparation1 hour$16

Match day starts early at Twickenham. The East car park opens to tailgate parties from 9am — some groups arrive at 7am to secure the best spots. Fuel up on a proper breakfast and load your BBQ supplies if participating, or prepare to be welcomed into a stranger's tailgate if you arrive empty-handed (this is encouraged).

💡 Marks & Spencer Food in Richmond Centre is the correct provisioner for match day: sausage rolls, Scotch eggs, good crisps, a bottle of something decent. Opens at 8am.

Twickenham East Car Park tailgate party3 hours$35

The Twickenham car park BBQ culture is entirely unique in rugby and possibly in sport. Hundreds of groups — families, corporates, fan clubs — set up folding tables, disposable BBQs and portable speakers from the morning. The atmosphere is convivial and cross-generational: grandparents, children, visiting fans, all mixing over burnt sausages and warm Pimm's. The RFU maintains it as a tradition deliberately.

💡 You don't need to be in a group to enjoy the car park. Walking through it solo and accepting the inevitable invitation to join a BBQ is the best way to meet English rugby fans at their most hospitable.

Afternoon

Enter Twickenham and take your seat early1 hour$20

The stadium fills quickly and the atmosphere inside is worth experiencing as it builds. Get to your seat 45 minutes before kick-off. The South Stand upper tier has the best view of the whole pitch. Concourse bars serve ale, Pimm's and the inevitable Twickenham prawn sandwich (a phrase that became famous in rugby culture).

💡 The West Stand hospitality boxes and the Rose Room are the corporate heartland of English rugby. General admission provides a far more authentic atmosphere at far less cost.

England vs [Opponent] — Six Nations match at Twickenham2.5 hours$140

82,000 people singing Swing Low, Sweet Chariot (whatever you think of its origins — it's the chant, it happens) and roaring at every England carry is an experience of sheer physical scale. Twickenham's roof closes the ends but the sides are open — sound escapes upward creating a different acoustic to enclosed grounds. The pitch is magnificent.

💡 RFU tickets via englandrugby.com. Face value £75–£160. Corporate hospitality through Twickenham Events is available at significant premium. Genuine tickets can sometimes be found through the official resale platform.

Evening

Post-match pubs in Richmond — the full riverside evening3–4 hours$55

After the match, the entire crowd descends on Richmond and Twickenham's pubs. The Roebuck, The Old Ship and The White Cross (all on or near Richmond riverside) are the best options — each sits on or overlooking the Thames. The post-match crowd is good-natured and the evening naturally extends until late.

💡 The White Cross floods at high tide — check tide tables if you want the full experience of drinking while the Thames laps at the pub walls.

Where to eat

Full English at the hotelbreakfast· $16
Car park tailgate BBQlunch· $22
Post-match pub dinner in Richmonddinner· $32

Car park tailgate BBQ: Sausages, burgers, Scotch eggs, Pimm's in a paper cup. This is the authentic Twickenham match-day lunch.

Post-match pub dinner in Richmond: Fish and chips, a Sunday roast if it's on, or a classic burger. Richmond pubs generally do good food even on crowded match nights.

3

Richmond Park deer, Hampton Court Palace — English grandeur at its finest

~$149

Morning

Richmond Park — deer spotting and Isabella Plantation2 hours

Richmond Park is the largest of London's Royal Parks (9.5km²) and home to over 600 free-roaming red and fallow deer. The Isabella Plantation within the park is a woodland garden that reaches peak bloom in spring — azaleas and rhododendrons in extraordinary colour. Entry to the park is free; it's one of the best wild spaces accessible from a major world city.

💡 Keep at least 50 metres from the deer — they are wild animals and will charge if cornered. Stag rutting season in October makes them particularly impressive and particularly dangerous.

Coffee stop at Pembroke Lodge45 minutes$12

Pembroke Lodge is a Georgian mansion near the centre of Richmond Park serving coffee, lunch and afternoon tea with views over the Thames valley to the Surrey hills — one of the best café views in London. The childhood home of the philosopher Bertrand Russell.

Afternoon

Hampton Court Palace2.5 hours$30

Hampton Court Palace is a 30-minute bus ride southwest from Richmond — the former home of Henry VIII and the most impressive Tudor palace in England. The State Apartments are stunning; the famous Maze is genuinely disorienting; the gardens (including the Great Vine, planted in 1768 and still producing grapes) are extraordinary in any season. Allow 2.5 hours.

💡 The palace café serves food in the original Tudor kitchens — the setting alone is worth stopping for a coffee.

Train from Hampton Court to London Waterloo and onward1.5 hours$12

Trains from Hampton Court to London Waterloo run every 30 minutes and take 35 minutes. Waterloo is one of London's main rail terminals with excellent connections to all domestic destinations and the Eurostar at St Pancras (20 minutes by Tube on the Jubilee Line). Allow 2 hours for Heathrow (Piccadilly line from Waterloo area).

💡 Heathrow Express from Paddington to LHR takes 15 minutes but costs £25. The Piccadilly line takes 50 minutes and costs £5.50 on contactless. Both are viable — depends on your flight time.

Evening

Airport departure or onward train1 hour$16

London Heathrow has excellent facilities in all terminals. The Terminal 5 (British Airways) shopping and restaurant level is particularly well-designed. A final pint of Fuller's London Pride at an airside pub is the correct farewell.

Where to eat

Coffee and pastry at Pembroke Lodge, Richmond Parkbreakfast· $14
Lunch at Hampton Court Palace cafélunch· $22
Airport dinnerdinner· $25

Coffee and pastry at Pembroke Lodge, Richmond Park: Views over the Thames valley from the lodge terrace. One of the finest breakfasts settings in London.

Lunch at Hampton Court Palace café: Served in the original Tudor kitchens. The cream tea (scones, clotted cream, jam) is the obvious choice.

Airport dinner: Heathrow T5 has Gordon Ramsay's Plane Food — a real restaurant airside that is genuinely good if your budget allows.

🎟️ Ticket advice

England Rugby (englandrugby.com) runs a ticketing ballot for RFU members. Non-member tickets are released in limited quantities. Corporate hospitality through Twickenham Events is expensive but comprehensive. The official resale platform sometimes has last-minute returns at face value. Avoid unauthorised touts — significant counterfeits exist for high-profile England matches.

Local tips

  • ·The car park tailgate culture at Twickenham is a genuine rugby phenomenon. Even if you're attending alone, walk through the East car park before the match — strangers will invite you to join.
  • ·Twickenham train station is a 10-minute walk from the stadium. The service from London Waterloo is packed on match days — expect standing room only on the return. Later trains (2+ hours after the final whistle) are less crowded.
  • ·London's contactless payment system means you rarely need cash — Tube, bus, most bars and restaurants all accept tap-to-pay.
  • ·Richmond upon Thames is one of London's safest and most pleasant areas. The contrast with central London's tourist areas is striking — it's genuinely where people live well.
  • ·Fuller's London Pride and Young's Special are the traditional London ales. Both are brewed locally (well, nearby) and are significantly better than the national lager alternatives.
