Circuit Zandvoort sits in the North Sea coastal dunes 30 km west of Amsterdam. The Dutch Grand Prix is the most feverishly supported home race in F1 β 100,000 orange-clad Verstappen fans create an atmosphere that rivals any sporting event on earth. The circuit features the extraordinary banked Turn 3 (Arie Luyendijk Corner, banked at 18 degrees) and is surrounded by sand dunes with sea views from the top grandstands. Plan four nights split between Amsterdam and Zandvoort.
Your 4-day itinerary
Arrival & Amsterdam
Morning
Schiphol is one of Europe's best-connected airports. Direct trains to Amsterdam Central (17 min), then Intercity Direct to Haarlem (20 min), then local train to Zandvoort aan Zee (10 min). On race weekend, direct trains from Amsterdam to Zandvoort run every 15 minutes with race specials.
π‘ Buy an OV-chipkaart (public transport card) at Schiphol β it works on trains, trams, and buses throughout the Netherlands and is far more convenient than individual tickets.
The UNESCO-listed 17th-century canal ring (the 'Golden Age' canals) is most beautiful in the morning light. Start at Brouwersgracht and walk south through the Jordaan neighbourhood β the smallest bridges, the narrowest houses, and the finest canal views in Amsterdam.
π‘ Rent a bicycle from MacBike or Yellow Bike β Amsterdam is the world's most bicycle-friendly city and cycling the canal ring is incomparably better than walking it.
Afternoon
The Netherlands' national museum on Museum Square β the finest collection of Dutch Golden Age painting in the world. Rembrandt's Night Watch, Vermeer's The Milkmaid, and 8,000 other masterworks in a magnificent 19th-century building.
π‘ Pre-book online β queue times without a ticket are 60+ minutes. The Night Watch gallery is worth 30 minutes alone.
Amsterdam's largest and most vibrant street market (closed Sundays) β Dutch stroopwafels, fresh herring, raw jenever (Dutch gin), and the Amsterdam street food culture in concentrated form.
Evening
Amsterdam's most cosmopolitan neighbourhood β excellent Indonesian restaurants (rijsttafel is the Dutch-Indonesian tradition), the world's best Dutch herring bars, and the superb Brasserie Harkema and Restaurant Blauw. Indonesian food in Amsterdam is exceptional because of the Dutch colonial history.
π‘ Rijsttafel (Indonesian 'rice table' β 20 small dishes) is the defining Amsterdam dining experience. Restaurant Blauw on Amstelveenseweg is the finest.
Where to eat
Scandinavian Embassy coffee: Amsterdam's finest specialty coffee. Sarphatipark area.
Albert Cuyp Market herring: Whole raw herring with onion and pickles, eaten Dutch-style (held by the tail, head tilted back). Mandatory.
Free Practice β Orange Sea
Morning
Zandvoort is the closest North Sea beach resort to Amsterdam. The beach extends 10 km β white sand, the North Sea dunes, and a completely different environment from the Amsterdam canals. Walk the boardwalk and have breakfast at one of the beach pavilions before the circuit day.
The Zandvoort circuit is 1 km from the beach β a 15-minute walk from the train station. The circuit opens from 08:00. The Orange Army is already in place by 07:30 β the Dutch fans camp, face-paint, and celebrate from the moment gates open. FP1 starts at 13:30.
Afternoon
FP1 at 13:30, FP2 at 17:00. Zandvoort's Arie Luyendijk Corner (Turn 3) is banked at 18 degrees β the steepest corner in F1 since Monza's banked oval was abandoned in 1961. Cars corner at 130 km/h at an angle that seems impossible from the grandstand. The circuit's dune backdrop and sea glimpses make this uniquely beautiful.
π‘ The Tarzan grandstand (Turn 1 hairpin) is the best overtaking spot on the circuit. The banked Turn 3 grandstand is the best visual experience β no grandstand in F1 offers a more dramatic architectural corner.
Evening
The beach bars (strandpaviljoen) behind the circuit stay open late on race weekend β bonfires on the beach, DJs, and the entire Orange Army celebrating on the North Sea dunes. An extraordinary post-race event atmosphere unique to Zandvoort.
Where to eat
Strandpaviljoen breakfast: Coffee and uitsmijter (fried eggs on bread with ham and Gouda) overlooking the North Sea.
Circuit Dutch food stalls: Herring on rye, bitterballen (deep-fried beef ragΓΉ balls), and Dutch beer. Excellent circuit food.
Qualifying β Orange Eruption
Morning
Haarlem (15 min by train from Zandvoort) is the most beautiful of Amsterdam's satellite cities β a 17th-century centre, the finest Frans Hals Museum (Dutch Masters), and an excellent Saturday morning market on the Grote Markt square.
Afternoon
FP3 at 12:30, qualifying at 16:00. Zandvoort qualifying produces uniquely tense sessions β the narrow circuit, the banked corners, and the wind off the North Sea create variable conditions from one end to the other. Q3 brings 100,000 fans to their feet; the noise when Verstappen sets a fast lap is the loudest reaction in F1.
π‘ The Tarzan grandstand (Turn 1) for qualifying: this is where every car must brake from 310 km/h to 70 km/h in 140 metres, and the grandstand is 20 metres from the apex. The closest any grandstand gets to F1 cars at their most physically impressive moment.
Evening
Return to Amsterdam (50 min train) for the qualifying night out. Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein are the social centres β bars, music, and the full Amsterdam post-GP atmosphere.
Where to eat
Race Day β Sea of Orange
Race start 15:00 CEST (13:00 UTC). Extended train service to Schiphol from Zandvoort on race Sunday. Last train departure approximately 23:00.
Morning
Early morning at Zandvoort beach before the circuit gates open β the North Sea at sunrise in August is a dramatic backdrop, the dunes are orange with flags, and the circuit preparation helicopters circle above.
Afternoon
72 laps of Zandvoort's coastal circuit. Race start 15:00. The circuit's short lap (4.259 km, 14 corners) gives fans more passes per session than almost any circuit except Red Bull Ring. The Turn 1 Tarzan hairpin produces the most reliable overtaking. A Dutch win creates the loudest in-circuit reaction in all of Formula 1.
π‘ If Verstappen leads at the exit of Turn 3 (Arie Luyendijk Corner) on lap 1, prepare for a sound unlike anything you've experienced. 100,000 Dutch fans react simultaneously β it is a physical force.
Evening
The beach parties continue into evening. Direct train to Amsterdam Schiphol for late-night and overnight departures throughout Europe and globally.
