The Red Bull Ring sits in a natural mountain bowl in the Styrian Alps, 220 km south of Vienna. The circuit is short (4.318 km, 10 corners), which means cars pass every 80 seconds — no waiting for action. The Austrian GP draws the largest Orange Army (Dutch Max Verstappen fans) in F1 outside the Netherlands. The surrounding Murtal valley has excellent hiking, and Graz (60 km) is a UNESCO World Heritage city. Plan four nights.
Your 4-day itinerary
Arrival & Graz
Morning
Graz Airport is 60 km from the Red Bull Ring (1 hour by hire car). Vienna Airport is 220 km north (2.5 hours). A hire car is essential in Styria — no reliable public transport reaches the circuit from Graz on race weekend.
💡 Book accommodation in Zeltweg (3 km from circuit), Judenburg (20 km), or Murau (30 km) for race weekend. Graz hotels are good if you don't mind the 60 km daily drive.
The fortified hilltop clock tower (Uhrturm) that survived Napoleon's siege (he forgot to demolish it) gives the most dramatic view in Graz — the Mur River, the Gothic roofscape, and the Alps. Take the funicular from Schlossbergplatz.
Afternoon
Graz is Austria's second city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Hauptplatz (main square), the Landeszeughaus (world's largest intact arsenal — 32,000 weapons), and the Kunsthaus Graz (alien spaceship art museum) form an extraordinary collection in a compact city.
💡 The Landeszeughaus is unique in the world — 32,000 suits of armour, swords, and firearms from 1600, exactly as left when the Ottoman threat ended. Surreal and magnificent.
Evening
Styrian cuisine is distinct from Viennese — pumpkin seed oil, Steirisches Wurzelfleisch (boiled pork with root vegetables), and extraordinary Schilcher wine (Styria's pink wine made from the rare Blauer Wildbacher grape). Steirischer Hof restaurant on the main square is the finest traditional Styrian restaurant.
Where to eat
Graz café breakfast: Melange coffee (Viennese-style cappuccino) with Kipferl (crescent pastry) — the Austrian morning ritual.
Graz market lunch: The Farmers Market on Kaiser-Josef-Platz has excellent Styrian produce — try the Kürbis (pumpkin) dishes and Steirerkäse cheese.
Free Practice — Alpine Racing
Morning
The Styrian wine region around Weststeiermark (15 km from the circuit) produces the distinctive Schilcher rosé — a uniquely acidic, dry pink wine made only in this area. Morning winery visits include tastings directly from the barrel.
The circuit opens from 08:00 on practice days. Walk the full perimeter — the steep hillside nature of the circuit becomes immediately apparent. The Orange Army sets up early in the grandstands. FP1 starts at 13:30.
💡 The Turn 3 grandstand on the uphill section is the best vantage point — cars climb the steep gradient and brake hard for the hairpin. The most physical braking on the circuit.
Afternoon
FP1 at 13:30, FP2 at 17:00. The Red Bull Ring's 4.318 km lap means cars pass every 80 seconds — significantly more exciting than longer circuits for fans. The Turn 3 hairpin and Turn 9–10 final sector are the two overtaking points. Watch from Turn 3 for consistent braking action.
💡 The elevation changes on the Red Bull Ring are the most dramatic in F1 — 65 metres of height change per lap. This is only clear from the grandstands or the hillside, not visible on TV.
Evening
The small village of Zeltweg (3 km from the circuit) has authentic Austrian gasthaus restaurants and the post-practice F1 crowd. Excellent Schnitzel and pumpkin seed oil salads at Gasthof Freigassner.
Where to eat
Circuit Austrian breakfast stall: Leberkäse (Austrian meatloaf) in a bread roll — a uniquely Austrian street food experience at race weekend.
Circuit food court: The Schnitzel stands at the Red Bull Ring are excellent circuit food.
Qualifying — The Orange Army
Morning
The valley around Spielberg has excellent marked hiking trails (Murtalweg) through Styrian forests and meadows. A 2-hour morning walk at altitude (750m) before the qualifying afternoon energises the day.
Afternoon
FP3 at 12:30, qualifying at 16:00. The Red Bull Ring is a Red Bull-owned circuit — qualifying here is an occasion for the home team. The Orange Army dominates the grandstands and the noise level in Q3 is extraordinary. The short lap means Q3 produces 5–6 full qualifying runs rather than the usual 3.
💡 The Orange Army's reaction when Verstappen sets a fast lap is genuinely unlike anything else in motorsport — 50,000 orange-clad fans erupting simultaneously in a mountain bowl creates a sound that can be heard 5 km away.
Evening
The village of Zeltweg becomes a Dutch-orange carnival after qualifying — every bar and restaurant is packed. Post-qualifying celebrations here are among the most authentic in F1.

Race Day & Alpine Departure
Race start 15:00 CEST (13:00 UTC). Graz Airport has evening and late-night flights to major European hubs.
Morning
Race day at the Red Bull Ring starts from 08:00. Support races include F2, F3, and the Red Bull junior development programme. The circuit fills early — arrive by 11:00 to secure your position in the hill grandstands above Turn 3.
Afternoon
71 laps of high-altitude, punchy racing. Race start 15:00. The Austrian GP has one of the highest crash rates in F1 — the Turn 3 hard braking zone and Turn 9–10 final complex produce incidents every race. Safety Cars are common, strategy matters, and the Orange Army makes every Verstappen move an event.
💡 The Turn 3 grandstand is better for the race than qualifying — the uphill braking zone produces brave overtaking attempts on the outside of the hairpin every lap. The most reliable outbraking move in F1.
Evening
Drive back to Graz (60 km, 1 hour) for a final evening in one of Austria's finest cities, or depart directly from Graz Airport (GRZ) with evening flights to most European hubs.
