The Masters is the first major of the golf calendar, held every April at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. It is the only major played at the same course every year, and Augusta National is widely considered the most beautiful golf course in the world β immaculate fairways, blooming azaleas, and the famous Amen Corner (holes 11, 12, 13). Tickets (called 'badges') are allocated by lottery β the Masters website runs a patron badge lottery each June for the following April. Face value is $100β200 per day; resale prices are $3,000β8,000+. If you have badges, plan 3 days: practice round Wednesday (most walkable), tournament round Thursday/Friday, final round weekend.
Your 3-day itinerary
Arrival & Augusta National Preview
Morning
Augusta Regional Airport (AGS) has limited connections but is 15 minutes from the course. Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL) is 2.5 hours drive on I-20 West. Rental car is essential β Augusta has no meaningful public transport. Book cars 3β4 months ahead for Masters week.
π‘ ATL has significantly more flight options but the 2.5-hour drive can extend to 4+ hours in Masters traffic. AGS is far more convenient if you can get a connection.
Washington Road is Augusta National's main frontage β walk or drive along the road to see the famous gates, the magnolia-lined main drive (not public), and the clubhouse visible through the trees. The course is completely closed to the public except during Masters week.
π‘ The Magnolia Lane entrance (the club's iconic drive) is visible from Washington Road but not open to patrons β you enter through the large general admission gates on either side.
Afternoon
Practice round badges (MondayβWednesday) are significantly cheaper and more relaxed than tournament rounds. The practice facility behind the clubhouse lets you watch players hitting at close range. The Par 3 Contest on Wednesday afternoon (where pros play the 9-hole par-3 course with family caddies) is one of golf's most charming events.
π‘ The Par 3 Contest on Wednesday afternoon is the best value Masters experience β relaxed, close access, all the top players, and family caddies making putts in the sunshine.
Amen Corner is the most famous stretch of holes in golf β the 11th (White Dogwood), par-3 12th (Golden Bell, over Rae's Creek), and 13th (Azalea). Position yourself at the 12th tee or 13th fairway for the most dramatic Masters moments.
π‘ The 12th green at Augusta is one of golf's great amphitheatres β the combination of the narrow green, Rae's Creek, and the wind through the pines produces more drama per hole than anywhere in golf.
Evening
Downtown Augusta's Broad Street area has excellent restaurants within 15 minutes of the course. Frog Hollow Tavern (Southern upscale cuisine) and Whiskey Bar Kitchen are both popular with Masters visitors. Reservations essential β Augusta's restaurant capacity is overwhelmed during Masters week.
π‘ Book restaurants in Augusta 2β3 months ahead for Masters week β the city's entire hospitality industry is at capacity.
Where to eat
Masters concessions β pimento cheese sandwich: The Masters pimento cheese sandwich is famously cheap ($1.50, unchanged since the 1960s) and genuinely delicious. It's a tradition β get one immediately upon entry.
Augusta National concessions: All concessions at Augusta National are famously cheap compared to any other major sporting venue β egg salad sandwich, Masters club sandwich, sweet tea.
Frog Hollow Tavern: Shrimp and grits, fried green tomatoes, and Southern hospitality. Reserve months ahead.
Tournament Round β Walking the Course
Tournament rounds run ThursdayβSunday. Thursday/Friday are 36-hole days with morning/afternoon waves. Saturday/Sunday are moving days and the final round. Final round Sunday is the most dramatic β the famous Augusta National tradition of the previous champion helping the new champion into the green jacket on the 18th green is one of sport's most emotional rituals. Patron badges are day-specific β your badge only admits you on the printed day.
Morning
Tournament round gates open at 08:00. Arriving early gives you access to the practice range where pros warm up before their tee times. The first groups tee off around 08:00 (Thu/Fri) β follow early tee times for smaller crowds and better viewing positions.
π‘ Phones with cameras are completely prohibited inside Augusta National β no smartphones, no cameras, no exceptions. Phones without cameras are allowed. You will be searched at the gate.
Choose a pairing featuring a top-10 player and follow them through the back nine (holes 10β18). This is how Masters veterans watch β not standing at one hole, but walking the course with the players. The back nine at Augusta on a Sunday afternoon is the most dramatic 9 holes in golf.
π‘ Augusta National's crowd management is extraordinary β marshals keep the flow moving and you can always find a viewing spot. The crossroads at the 15th green and 16th tee is the best all-round viewing position.
Afternoon
The manual scoreboards at Augusta National β updated by hand with coloured numbers on a classic board β are a deliberate aesthetic choice in the digital age. The azaleas peak in early April (coinciding with Masters week) β the course is genuinely one of the most beautiful places in America during this week.
π‘ April 7β12 is historically peak azalea time at Augusta β the colour contrast between the pink azaleas, white dogwoods, and the manicured green fairways is extraordinary.
The Masters merchandise pavilion is the only place to buy official Masters merchandise β it's only available on-site during Masters week and cannot be purchased online. The items (flags, hats, jackets, glassware) are iconic and sought-after. Queues build from 09:00.
π‘ The green Masters hat and logo towel are the most popular items. The Masters jacket (the famous green jacket) is NOT sold in the merchandise pavilion β it's only for members and champions.
Evening
Masters week in Augusta has a specific social culture β groups gather for celebratory dinners after the day's round. The Boll Weevil restaurant or Sky City Rooftop Bar (with Augusta Canal views) are excellent choices for a post-round dinner with fellow golf enthusiasts.
Where to eat
Augusta National egg salad sandwich: The egg salad sandwich and Masters club are both under $3 β the best concession prices in major professional sport.
On-course concessions: Eat light and keep walking β standing in a concession queue means missing golf.
Final Round or Departure
Morning
If you have a Sunday badge, arrive early β the final round is the most attended day and positions at Amen Corner and 18 are claimed by 09:00. If departing today, the Augusta Canal Historic District (a 19th-century industrial canal with a pleasant towpath walk) is a peaceful morning option.
Leave Augusta by 14:00 at the latest for an afternoon flight from ATL β Sunday afternoon I-20 traffic eastbound fills with departing Masters visitors. The drive from Augusta to ATL takes 2.5β4 hours depending on when you leave.
π‘ Monday morning departure is significantly smoother than Sunday β if your schedule allows, stay Sunday night and drive to ATL in the quiet early morning.
Where to eat
Augusta breakfast diner: Biscuits and gravy, grits, and sweet tea β classic Georgia breakfast.
