The US Open is held in June and is renowned as the most demanding of the four majors β the USGA deliberately sets up courses to be as difficult as possible, with deep rough, fast greens, and narrow fairways. When played at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York (the Hamptons), the course becomes one of golf's most iconic venues β a genuine links-style layout exposed to Long Island Sound winds. The Hamptons setting adds a distinctive social element: the gallery is wealthy, the houses nearby are extraordinary, and Southampton village has some of the best restaurants on the East Coast.
Your 3-day itinerary
Arrival & Practice Round
Morning
Take the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) from Penn Station or Atlantic Terminal to Southampton (2.5 hours, $20β30) or drive the Montauk Highway (LIE east then Sunrise Highway). The train is significantly more relaxing than driving β traffic on the Long Island Expressway during US Open week can be severe.
π‘ The LIRR runs special US Open shuttles from Southampton station to Shinnecock Hills during tournament week β check the MTA website for schedules.
Practice round tickets are available via usopen.com. MondayβWednesday practice rounds offer close access and a relaxed atmosphere. Shinnecock is a national landmark course β the views from the elevated portions of the course over Shinnecock Bay are extraordinary.
π‘ The 9th and 18th greens at Shinnecock are elevated and give panoramic views of the Long Island Sound β take a moment to appreciate the setting between watching golf.
Afternoon
Southampton Village has a charming Main Street with high-end boutiques, art galleries, and excellent restaurants. The Parrish Art Museum (modern building, excellent collection of East End artists) is 5 minutes walk from Main Street.
Cooper's Beach in Southampton is consistently rated one of America's finest beaches β white sand, clean water, and lifeguards. The late afternoon light on the Atlantic from Cooper's Beach is exceptional.
Evening
Pierre's in Bridgehampton (French, excellent wine list) and Tutto il Giorno in Southampton (Italian) are both outstanding. Reservations essential during US Open week β the Hamptons dining scene gets overwhelmed with 50,000 extra visitors.
π‘ Book restaurants 4β6 weeks ahead for Hamptons dining during US Open week β the good places fill completely.
Where to eat
Golden Pear CafΓ©, Southampton: The Hamptons' most beloved breakfast spot β egg white omelette, avocado toast, excellent coffee.
On-course concessions: US Open concessions are more expensive than most tournaments β budget accordingly.
Tournament Round β Testing the World's Best
US Open tournament rounds: Thursday/Friday (cut after 36 holes to top 60 and ties), Saturday, Sunday. The US Open is won by even par or over par in difficult conditions β a score of -10 would be exceptional. The trophy (a silver cup) is presented on the 18th green in front of the grandstands.
Morning
US Open courses are set up to be almost impossibly difficult β the USGA raises the rough to 4β5 inches, narrows fairways, and speeds greens to the limit. Watching the world's best players struggle on a course that humbles them is uniquely compelling. Even the top players regularly shoot over par.
π‘ The US Open rough is the most punishing in golf β watching players attempt recovery shots from 5-inch fescue is both frustrating (for players) and fascinating (for spectators).
Holes 7 (par-3, elevated tee to a green surrounded by bunkers) and 11 (long par-4 with prevailing crosswind) are Shinnecock's signature tests. The green complexes are so firm and fast that even slightly off-line approach shots leave impossible putts.
Afternoon
The 18th at Shinnecock Hills finishes uphill to a green surrounded by grandstands β one of the most dramatic finishes in US Open golf. Claim a position by 13:00 to watch afternoon leaders fight home up the hill against the prevailing wind.
π‘ The wind at Shinnecock shifts throughout the day β a calm morning 18th becomes a brutally difficult upwind finish in the afternoon. The scores on the leaderboard reflect this.
Sag Harbor (20 min drive) is one of the Hamptons' most charming villages β a former whaling port with a beautiful main street, American Hotel (1846), and the Sag Harbor Cinema. A post-golf afternoon walk here is a perfect contrast to the tournament atmosphere.
Evening
The American Hotel in Sag Harbor has been a Hamptons institution since 1846 β the wine cellar is extraordinary (50,000 bottles) and the dining room is genuinely historic. Splurge-worthy post-US Open dinner destination.
π‘ The American Hotel's wine list is one of the finest on the East Coast β ask the sommelier for a recommendation from the Burgundy section.
Where to eat
American Hotel, Sag Harbor: Reserve well in advance. One of the best wine cellars on the East Coast.
Hamptons Morning & Departure
Morning
Drive the Hamptons' famous Montauk Highway through Bridgehampton and East Hampton β the hedge-lined lanes, historic farmstands, and ocean glimpses make it one of America's most distinctly American morning drives.
The LIRR from Southampton to Penn Station takes 2.5 hours. Book return tickets in advance β the Sunday departure after the US Open final round is the busiest LIRR day of the year for this route.
π‘ Monday morning departure is significantly smoother than Sunday evening β if flexibility allows, stay Sunday night and travel Monday.
Where to eat
Dreesen's, East Hampton: The Hamptons' most loved local bakery β coffee cake, muffins, and strong coffee.

Local tips
- Β·The US Open rough is set to 4β5 inches of fescue β the longest rough in major championship golf. The recovery shots from this rough are some of the most dramatic shots you'll see.
- Β·Shinnecock Hills is exposed to Long Island Sound winds that can shift 90 degrees between morning and afternoon β this is why US Open conditions at Shinnecock are particularly brutal and unpredictable.
- Β·The Hamptons has an extraordinarily strong gallery compared to most tour events β the local wealth and social scene mean corporate hospitality and gallery fashion are as prominent as the golf.
- Β·Farmstands on Route 27 sell the best sweetcorn, tomatoes, and berries on the East Coast during June β stop at any of them for an exceptional snack.
- Β·The US Open trophy (officially called the United States Open Championship Trophy) was last officially named β it's presented without a new trophy each year, just the engraving of the champion's name.
