HYROX Chicago

Race at the world's largest convention centre โ€” then eat deep-dish and watch the skyline.

Sat, 18 Apr 2026 McCormick Place, Chicago 3 days ยท arrive Fri, 17 Apr 2026

HYROX Chicago is held at McCormick Place Convention Center โ€” the largest convention centre in the Western Hemisphere at over 2.6 million square feet of total space. March in Chicago is cold (0โ€“8ยฐC) but the venue is fully climate-controlled, making race conditions ideal. Chicago's HYROX field reflects the city's deep fitness culture โ€” home to the Chicago Marathon, the city takes endurance sport seriously. The athlete village at McCormick Place is enormous. Day 3 offers world-class museums, Millennium Park, and the mandatory deep-dish pizza.

Your 3-day itinerary

1

Arrival & HYROX Expo

~$160

Morning

Arrive at O'Hare (ORD) or Midway (MDW) Airport1 hr$3

O'Hare: Blue Line El train to downtown (The Loop) in 45 minutes ($2.50). Midway: Orange Line El to The Loop in 35 minutes ($2.50). From The Loop, the Green or Red Line connects to McCormick Place (Cermak-McCormick Place station, Green Line โ€” opened 2015).

๐Ÿ’ก Buy a Ventra card ($5 + $10 credit) at the airport El station โ€” tap-in/out on all CTA trains and buses. Unlimited 3-day pass is $20 and worth it for the weekend.

HYROX Expo โ€” McCormick Place2 hrs

The McCormick Place HYROX expo is among the most expansive on the entire circuit โ€” the venue's sheer scale allows for a massive exhibitor floor, demo areas, and warm-up spaces. Athlete check-in, bib collection, and timing chip are all handled here. Multiple halls mean good wayfinding is essential โ€” download the venue map.

๐Ÿ’ก McCormick Place is enormous โ€” add 10โ€“15 minutes to your time estimate for navigating between the parking/transport entrance and the specific HYROX hall. Signage is good but the building is vast.

Afternoon

The Loop and Chicago Riverwalk2 hrs

Chicago's downtown core is centred on The Loop (named for the elevated El track that circles it). The Chicago Riverwalk (2.65 km along the Chicago River) is a flat, stunning promenade with bridges, public art, and cafรฉs. Perfect pre-race gentle walking with views of one of the world's greatest skylines.

๐Ÿ’ก The Chicago Architecture Center runs river boat tours that give the best views of the city's extraordinary building collection. Tours run in warmer months โ€” March is borderline but possible. Worth checking in advance.

Millennium Park โ€” Cloud Gate45 mins

Anish Kapoor's reflective Bean sculpture (officially Cloud Gate) in Millennium Park is one of Chicago's defining landmarks. The park is free, flat, and centrally located โ€” a gentle 30-minute detour before dinner.

Evening

Pre-race dinner โ€” deep-dish pizza (light option)2 hrs$40

Chicago deep-dish is a bucket-list food experience โ€” but it is very heavy for a pre-race meal. Lou Malnati's (multiple locations, best at River North) does both deep-dish and a lighter 'thin crust' option. For pure carb loading, Quartino (Italian, River North) does excellent shareable pasta and light pizza that is kinder to pre-race digestion.

๐Ÿ’ก Deep-dish pizza is genuinely very filling โ€” if you order it the night before the race, eat a half-portion and save the rest. The butter crust and thick cheese layer are hard on pre-race digestion. Thin crust or pasta is the smarter choice.

Where to eat

Airport cafรฉ or hotelbreakfastยท $14
Chicago Riverwalk cafรฉ or food courtlunchยท $18
Quartino or Lou Malnati's (thin crust)dinnerยท $40

Quartino or Lou Malnati's (thin crust): High carb, but go lighter than the full deep-dish. Save the full deep-dish for Day 3.

2

Race Day โ€” 8 Stations, 1 Goal

~$200

Heats run from 08:00 to 18:00 โ€” arrive at McCormick Place 60 minutes before your assigned heat. Check your heat time on the HYROX app the evening before. Live leaderboards update in real time on the HYROX app. The SkiErg (station 1) sets the pace for your entire race โ€” Chicago athletes are often endurance-strong and push hard early. Stay in your own pace zone on the SkiErg regardless of what the person next to you is doing.

Morning

Pre-race breakfast30 mins$16

Eat 2.5โ€“3 hours before your heat. Chicago hotels tend to have good American breakfast options โ€” oatmeal, eggs, toast. Stick to oatmeal with banana for race morning. March in Chicago is cold outdoors โ€” wrap up well for the walk to the El station even though the venue is heated.

๐Ÿ’ก McCormick Place has limited food options at very early hours โ€” if you are in the first heat wave, eat at the hotel and take a banana and energy gels with you.

Green Line to McCormick Place โ€” Transition area1 hr$3

The Cermak-McCormick Place Green Line station is directly at the convention centre. The transition area opens 60 minutes before each heat. McCormick's massive corridors can feel intimidating โ€” follow HYROX directional signage from the El station to your specific race hall.

๐Ÿ’ก Bring your own chalk without exception โ€” with thousands of athletes using shared equipment, chalk availability at the venue can be unreliable by mid-morning heats. A small zip-lock bag weighs nothing.

Afternoon

HYROX Race โ€” Chicago1.5โ€“2.5 hrs

8 x 1km runs alternating with 8 functional stations: SkiErg โ†’ Sled Push โ†’ Sled Pull โ†’ Burpee Broad Jump โ†’ Row โ†’ Farmers Carry โ†’ Sandbag Lunges โ†’ Wall Balls. McCormick Place's enormous halls mean the indoor track is typically well-designed with good sight lines. The Chicago crowd is energetic and vocal โ€” typical of a city built on sport.

๐Ÿ’ก The Farmers Carry (200m with a loaded frame) is where grip endurance separates athletes. Train it loaded at race weight (2 x 24kg men / 2 x 16kg women) for full 200m sets. Chalk your hands immediately before this station.

Athlete village โ€” McCormick Place2 hrs

The athlete village at McCormick is vast with sponsor activations, recovery stations, and food. The scale of the venue means you are unlikely to feel crowded. Watch later heat races from the spectator walkways above the course.

๐Ÿ’ก Check the HYROX app immediately after finishing โ€” your official split times and category ranking are uploaded within minutes of you crossing the line.

Evening

Recovery dinner โ€” Chicago steakhouse or Wicker Park2 hrs$70

Chicago is steak country. Gibson's Bar & Steakhouse (Gold Coast) is one of America's great steakhouses โ€” post-HYROX protein consumption. For something less formal, avec (West Loop) does excellent Mediterranean small plates perfect for sharing after a race. Book in advance for either.

๐Ÿ’ก Gibson's does not take reservations โ€” arrive at 17:30 to beat the dinner rush, or go later at 20:00 after the rush. The bone-in ribeye is legendary.

Where to eat

Hotel oatmealbreakfastยท $16
Athlete village recovery foodlunch
Gibson's or avecdinnerยท $70

Hotel oatmeal: Oatmeal, banana, coffee. Pack energy gels for the race.

Athlete village recovery food: Sponsor-distributed in the finisher area โ€” electrolytes and recovery bars.

Gibson's or avec: Massive protein recovery after a HYROX race โ€” Chicago does not do small portions.

3

Recovery & Departure

~$130

Morning

Art Institute of Chicago2 hrs$25

One of the world's great art museums โ€” the pointillist Sunday on La Grande Jatte, Grant Wood's American Gothic, and Edward Hopper's Nighthawks are all here. The museum sits on Michigan Avenue at Millennium Park. Standing and walking through galleries is ideal for post-HYROX recovery.

๐Ÿ’ก Book online to skip the entrance queue. Illinois residents get free entry โ€” international visitors pay $25. Allow at least 2 hours โ€” the collection is enormous.

Millennium Park recovery jog (or walk)45 mins

If your legs allow โ€” a gentle 2km jog around Millennium Park and along the Lakefront Trail is one of the great urban running experiences. The flat lakefront path goes for miles along Lake Michigan. Walk if running is not happening.

๐Ÿ’ก The Lakefront Trail in March is beautiful but cold โ€” the lake breeze is sharp. A light jacket is essential.

Afternoon

Deep-dish pizza lunch โ€” Lou Malnati's or Giordano's1.5 hrs$28

Today is the day for Chicago's signature dish. Lou Malnati's butter crust deep-dish with sausage is the purist's choice. Giordano's does stuffed-crust deep-dish that requires 45 minutes to cook โ€” order as soon as you sit down. You have earned this.

๐Ÿ’ก Deep-dish takes 30โ€“45 minutes to cook. Order water and garlic bread while you wait and use the time to check your HYROX final results.

O'Hare or Midway departure1 hr$3

Blue Line El to O'Hare takes 45 minutes from The Loop ($2.50). Orange Line to Midway takes 35 minutes. Allow 2.5 hours before domestic departure, 3 hours for international.

Where to eat

Hotel or cafรฉ near Millennium Parkbreakfastยท $16
Lou Malnati's deep-dish pizzalunchยท $28

Hotel or cafรฉ near Millennium Park: Eggs, toast, coffee โ€” the American breakfast is good protein recovery.

Lou Malnati's deep-dish pizza: The non-negotiable Chicago experience. You have earned every calorie.

Local tips

  • ยทMarch in Chicago is cold โ€” 0โ€“8ยฐC with wind chill from Lake Michigan making it feel colder. Pack a warm jacket for outdoor sightseeing.
  • ยทThe CTA El is the most reliable race-day transport โ€” Green Line directly serves McCormick Place. Rideshare prices surge dramatically on race weekend.
  • ยทDeep-dish pizza is Chicago's identity food but is heavy โ€” save it for Day 3 recovery, not Day 1 pre-race.
  • ยทTrain the Wall Balls station at full height (9 feet / 2.7m) โ€” many CrossFit gyms use 10-foot marks. The official HYROX standard is 9 feet for women, 10 feet for men.
  • ยทBring your own chalk โ€” with thousands of athletes at McCormick Place, shared chalk supplies run low. Your own supply is non-negotiable.
  • ยทThe Chicago Architecture Center (CAC) runs the world's best architecture tours โ€” if you have a free afternoon, the river boat tour is exceptional.
