HYROX Milan is held at Allianz MiCo (Milano Convention Centre) or Fiera Milano โ two of Europe's largest congress and exhibition venues. March/April in Milan brings mild spring weather and the city is at its most energetic before the summer heat. Milan is a serious HYROX market โ Italians are fiercely competitive and the field is deep. Day 1 is the HYROX Expo and first impressions of one of Europe's most stylish cities. Race day delivers on all counts. Day 3 is Duomo, aperitivo, and a slow departure through the Navigli canals.
Your 3-day itinerary
Arrival & HYROX Expo
Morning
Malpensa (MXP) is 45 km northwest โ the Malpensa Express train reaches Milan Centrale in 51 minutes (โฌ13). Linate (LIN) is 7 km east of the city โ the M4 Metro line (opened 2023) connects to the centre in 15 minutes (โฌ1.50). For Fiera Milano venue, Malpensa is ideal as it is in the same direction.
๐ก Validate your metro or train ticket before boarding โ inspectors are common and fines are steep.
Athlete check-in, bib and timing chip collection. The Milan HYROX expo is large and well-attended โ Italian fitness brands and the usual HYROX sponsor hall. Allianz MiCo is reachable by tram and Metro M5 (Portello). Fiera Milano is at the end of the M1 (Rho Fiera station, 30 mins from centre).
๐ก Collect your bib Friday if you arrive in time โ Saturday morning expo queues can be long. Check if your wave is Saturday or Sunday โ Milan sometimes runs across two race days.
Afternoon
The largest Gothic cathedral in Italy (third largest church in the world) sits at the heart of Milan. The rooftop terrace allows you to walk among the 135 marble spires โ accessible by stairs or lift. The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II shopping arcade adjacent is the most beautiful covered arcade in the world.
๐ก Book the Duomo rooftop online in advance (โฌ13 stairs, โฌ18 lift) โ same-day queues can be 45 minutes. Walking the spires is ideal pre-race sightseeing โ no heavy exertion, standing views.
Milan's artistic neighbourhood: narrow streets, independent boutiques, and the Pinacoteca di Brera gallery. A gentle afternoon walk through Brera before dinner is the perfect pre-race European city afternoon.
Evening
Milan is Italy โ pasta the night before a HYROX race is obligatory. Osteria del Treno (near Centrale) does excellent cacio e pepe and risotto Milanese. In Brera, Latteria di San Marco is a local institution with superb simple pasta. Portions are not enormous by Italian standards โ order a primo (pasta) and a secondo (protein).
๐ก Skip the wine the night before โ a splash of Italian sparkling water and a half glass of red is acceptable, but pre-race hydration matters more than the Barolo.
Where to eat
Bar breakfast: Espresso and cornetto (croissant) standing at the bar โ the authentic Italian breakfast. Under โฌ3.
Panino near expo: A good panino from a deli is simple carbs โ prosciutto crudo on ciabatta is fine.
Pasta restaurant: Risotto Milanese or cacio e pepe โ classic carb loading, Milan edition.
Race Day โ 8 Stations, 1 Goal
Heats run from 08:00 to 18:00 โ arrive at the venue 60 minutes before your assigned heat. Check your heat time on the HYROX app the evening before. Live leaderboards are visible on the HYROX app throughout the day. The SkiErg (station 1) sets the pace for your entire race โ start 15% easier than feels comfortable. Italian athletes tend to go out hard; do not chase them on the SkiErg.
Morning
Eat 2.5โ3 hours before your heat. Italian hotel breakfasts lean sweet (pastries, jams) โ supplement with oats or ask for eggs if available. A brioche with jam and espresso is surprisingly race-functional. Bring a banana and peanut butter from a nearby supermarket (Esselunga or Carrefour) the night before if you want proper fuel.
๐ก Italian hotel breakfasts rarely include savoury protein. Visit a nearby supermarket Friday evening to buy oats, peanut butter, and a banana for Saturday morning race fuel.
The Metro M5 (purple line, Portello stop) is the easiest route to Allianz MiCo from central Milan. The transition area opens 60 minutes before your heat โ rack your gear, set up chalk, wrist wraps, and confirm your lane assignment with a HYROX official.
๐ก Italian crowds are loud and passionate โ the atmosphere in the Milan arena is exceptional. Feed off it on the Wall Balls station โ the crowd tends to erupt for every 10-rep milestone.
Afternoon
8 x 1km runs alternating with 8 functional stations: SkiErg โ Sled Push โ Sled Pull โ Burpee Broad Jump โ Row โ Farmers Carry โ Sandbag Lunges โ Wall Balls. Italian athletes are disciplined and the Milan field is competitive across all categories. The indoor arena atmosphere is loud and electric.
๐ก The Sandbag Lunges (100m) come 7th โ by that point your legs are already spent from 6 stations and ~7km of running. Practise weighted lunges when already fatigued in training. Fresh-leg lunges in the gym do not replicate this.
Collect your HYROX finisher medal and t-shirt. The Italian sports nutrition brands in the athlete village tend to be excellent โ particularly the recovery coffee and protein options.
Evening
Milan's aperitivo hour (18:00โ21:00) is one of the world's great rituals. Many Navigli bars include a full buffet of pasta, risotto, and bread with the price of one cocktail or spritz (~โฌ10โ12). After a HYROX race, this is both economical and delicious recovery eating. Ripa di Porta Ticinese is the main canal street.
๐ก The aperitivo buffet is one of the best-value post-race recovery mechanisms in the world. Order a Campari Spritz (the Milan original) and eat freely from the buffet โ pasta, bruschetta, cold cuts, and salads.
Where to eat
Hotel breakfast / supermarket: Buy oats and peanut butter the evening before for guaranteed pre-race fuel.
Finisher village recovery food: Sponsor-distributed in the athlete village.
Aperitivo buffet โ Navigli: One spritz buys access to the full buffet โ Milan's best post-race tradition.
Recovery & Departure
Morning
The mandatory Italian ritual. Standing at a traditional bar counter, order a doppio espresso and cornetto (croissant). This costs โฌ2โ3 and is one of the great simple pleasures of a Milan morning.
๐ก Sitting at a table in Italian cafรฉs costs 2โ3x the standing bar price โ it is not a rip-off, it is table service. Stand at the bar for the local experience.
On the last Sunday of the month, the Navigli holds the Mercatone dell'Antiquariato (antiques market) along both canals. Any Sunday morning, the canalside is a pleasant gentle walk with post-race stiffness-easing flat terrain.
๐ก The Navigli canal area was part of Leonardo da Vinci's 15th-century water engineering project โ the locks and sluices are largely original.
Afternoon
One of Italy's most important art galleries โ Raphael, Caravaggio, Mantegna, and Tintoretto. The gallery occupies a 17th-century palace in the Brera neighbourhood. Ideal for post-race sightseeing โ you sit or stand, no physical exertion required.
Allow 2.5 hours for Malpensa (MXP) โ the express train from Centrale takes 51 minutes. Linate (LIN) is 15 minutes on the M4 Metro from the city centre.
Where to eat
Italian bar breakfast: Espresso and cornetto โ standing at the bar, the Italian way.
Osteria lunch near Brera: Sunday lunch in Milan is a serious social institution โ a simple pasta and a glass of wine is warranted after yesterday's race.
