The TCS Amsterdam Marathon is one of Europe's most scenic — the course runs through the historic canal belt (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), through Vondelpark, and finishes inside the historic 1928 Olympic Stadium. October in Amsterdam is cool, clear, and ideal running weather. The city is compact, cycling-friendly, and endlessly charming to explore before and after race day.
Your 3-day itinerary
Arrival & Canal Belt Exploration
Morning
Schiphol is one of Europe's best airports — directly connected to Amsterdam Centraal station by train in 15 minutes (€5.70). The city centre is compact and best explored on foot or by bicycle. Stay near the canal belt for the quintessential Amsterdam experience.
💡 Buy a single journey or day ticket at Schiphol — the NS train is efficient and direct.
The Amsterdam Marathon Expo is held at the Amsterdam Olympic Stadium (Stadionplein, easily reached by tram 24). Bib pickup is mandatory in person on Saturday. The expo includes the race merchandise and running brand stalls.
💡 The Olympic Stadium itself (built for the 1928 Olympics) is worth exploring — ask about stadium tours at the expo desk.
Afternoon
Amsterdam's 17th-century canal ring is UNESCO-listed for good reason. Walk from Centraal Station south along the Herengracht — the grandest of the three main canals — and the Prinsengracht to the Jordaan neighbourhood. This is the Amsterdam you came to see.
The Anne Frank House on Prinsengracht is one of the most important sites in Amsterdam. Book tickets months in advance — same-day entry is not available. The experience is profound.
💡 Tickets must be booked online weeks ahead. Not bookable same-day.
Evening
The Jordaan is Amsterdam's most charming neighbourhood — narrow streets, independent restaurants, and excellent Dutch-international cuisine. Toscanini serves outstanding Italian; Cafe de Reiger is perfect for traditional Dutch biefstuk and jenever.
💡 Keep dinner carb-heavy and familiar — pasta, risotto, or roast chicken. Avoid new foods or excessive alcohol the night before.
Where to eat
Jordaan café: Dutch brunch culture is strong — uitsmijters (fried eggs on bread) are the local classic.
Race Day — Olympic Stadium Finish
Race start 10:00 from Museumplein. The cutoff time is 6 hours 15 minutes. The Olympic Stadium finish is emotional — the crowd inside the stadium is cheering every single runner who comes through.
Morning
Race start is at 10:00 from Museumplein (the square in front of the Rijksmuseum). The start area is a 20-minute walk from the Jordaan. Eat breakfast at 07:00 and be at the start area by 09:00.
💡 October Amsterdam mornings are cool (8–12°C at start) — wear throwaway layers that you'll discard by mile 4 as you warm up.
The race begins in front of the Rijksmuseum — one of the most spectacular start areas in marathon running. Running past the 'I amsterdam' letters (which have been reinstated at various locations) with thousands of cheering spectators sets a perfect tone.
Afternoon
42.195 km through the canal ring, Vondelpark, Amstelpark, along the Amstel river, and through the Bos (Amsterdam Wood). The course is flat and fast with excellent crowd support. The final 400m runs inside the 1928 Olympic Stadium — one of the most emotional marathon finishes in Europe.
💡 The Amstel river section (miles 18–22) is scenic but can feel lonely — mentally prepare for this section and use your pacing strategy to power through.
Running into the 1928 Olympic Stadium to finish is an emotional and memorable experience. Collect your medal, mylar blanket, and recovery bag. The stadium has changing facilities and massage services for finishers.
Evening
Leidseplein (2 km from the stadium) is Amsterdam's entertainment hub with excellent restaurants and cafés. Café American on the square is a beautiful art nouveau setting for a recovery celebration meal. Go for Dutch stamppot (mashed potato with greens) or the classic bitterballen (fried snacks) with Heineken.
Where to eat
Hotel room/café: Oats with banana — familiar race-morning fuel.
Recovery & Rijksmuseum
Morning
The Rijksmuseum is the Netherlands' greatest museum — Rembrandt's Night Watch and Vermeer's Milkmaid are here. The building is a masterpiece of Dutch neo-Renaissance architecture. Monday mornings are less crowded than weekends.
💡 The Night Watch is in the Gallery of Honour on the ground floor — easy on post-marathon legs.
Amsterdam's biggest street market runs along the Albert Cuypstraat in the De Pijp neighbourhood — 300 stalls selling fresh produce, stroopwafels, Dutch cheese, herring, and clothing. A perfect recovery morning browse.
Afternoon
Amsterdam Schiphol is 15 minutes from Centraal by train — the easiest major airport in Europe to reach. Allow 2 hours before departure for international flights.
Where to eat
Albert Cuyp Market: Poffertjes (mini pancakes) and raw herring are Dutch market staples.
