The Boston Marathon is the most storied road race in the world, held every year on Patriots' Day Monday โ the third Monday in April. To run Boston, you must first qualify: the Boston Qualifier (BQ) time standard is among the most respected benchmarks in recreational running. The course is a point-to-point route from the rural town of Hopkinton, west of Boston, rolling east through the Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, and Newton hills before the legendary Heartbreak Hill series (km 29โ34), then descending into Kenmore Square and onto Boylston Street for one of sport's great finish lines. Patriots' Day is a Massachusetts state holiday โ schools and many businesses close, the city fills with spectators, and the Red Sox play a home morning game at Fenway Park. This itinerary covers the mandatory Expo at the Hynes Convention Center, a pasta carb-load dinner in Back Bay, race day, and a recovery morning on the Freedom Trail.
Your 3-day itinerary
Arrival & Race Expo
Morning
Logan is conveniently located just 3 miles from downtown Boston. The Silver Line SL1 bus runs free from all terminals to South Station (25 min), connecting to the Red and Orange Lines. A taxi or rideshare to Back Bay or Copley Square is $25โ35 and takes 15โ25 minutes depending on traffic.
๐ก Marathon weekend traffic near Logan can be heavy on Sunday afternoon. Budget extra time or take the Silver Line bus to South Station for a reliable, fast route.
Back Bay is the optimal base โ you are a 5-minute walk from the finish line at Boylston Street, steps from the Hynes Convention Center Expo, and close to excellent pasta restaurants. The Copley Plaza, Lenox Hotel, and Marriott Copley Place are all popular with runners. Book 6โ12 months ahead โ marathon weekend is Boston's busiest hotel weekend of the year.
๐ก Request a high floor facing Boylston Street if possible โ you may be able to watch the race from your window while recovering on Day 3.
Afternoon
MANDATORY bib and timing chip collection โ same-day race-morning pickup is not available. The Hynes Convention Center is on Boylston Street in Back Bay, a 5-minute walk from most Back Bay hotels. Bring your registration confirmation and a government-issued photo ID (passport or driver's licence). Collect your bib, D-tag timing chip (attaches to shoe laces), official runner's bag, and T-shirt. The Boston Expo is among the largest in marathon running โ three full days, hundreds of exhibitors, and the electric pre-race energy of a major.
๐ก Sunday (Day 1) is the best day to visit โ lines move faster than Saturday. Bring your own pen for autograph opportunities; elite athletes often attend the Expo. Do NOT leave bib collection to Monday morning โ it is simply not permitted.
Exit the Hynes on Boylston Street and walk the final 400 metres to the finish line banner (if it is erected โ usually up by Saturday). Standing at the finish line 24 hours before you cross it is a powerful ritual. Keep total walking to 15 minutes.
๐ก The finish line is in front of the Boston Public Library. The yellow and blue painted line on the road is a permanent fixture โ take your photo.
Evening
Back Bay has numerous excellent Italian restaurants within walking distance of all Copley-area hotels. Grill 23 & Bar on Stuart Street, Davios Northern Italian Steakhouse on Arlington Street, or the simpler Trattoria di Monica in the North End (20-min taxi) are all reliable choices. Order a full plate of spaghetti or linguine with a simple sauce (marinara or olive oil and garlic โ no cream, no shellfish), extra bread, and a still water. One glass of red wine is acceptable; two is too many.
๐ก Many Back Bay restaurants offer a pre-marathon pasta menu the night before the race. Book in advance โ they fill up completely on marathon weekend.
Where to eat
Airport arrival snack or Logan food court: Logan has a Dunkin' (Boston's spiritual home of Dunkin' Donuts), Au Bon Pain, and Legal Sea Foods. A bagel with peanut butter is a reliable carb-forward airport arrival snack.
Expo food hall or sandwich near Hynes: Eataly Boston in the Prudential Center (connected to the Hynes by enclosed walkway) has excellent pasta, pizza, and focaccia โ ideal carb-forward Expo lunch.
Back Bay pasta carb-load dinner: Simple pasta, bread, water. Skip the appetiser and dessert โ eat more pasta instead.
Race Day โ Boylston Street Finish
Race guns: Elite women start at 09:32; Elite men and Wave 1 at 10:00; Wave 2 at 10:25; Wave 3 at 10:50. Check your bib for your assigned wave. School bus boarding from Boston Common begins 06:30 โ do not miss your wave's departure deadline (usually 70โ90 min before your wave start). CRITICAL BAG NOTE: Boston does NOT have a conventional bag drop at the finish. Your post-race dry clothes must be placed in the clear BAA gear check bag and surrendered at the Athletes' Village in Hopkinton โ these bags are trucked to the Boylston Street finish area retrieval zone. Do not place in the bag anything you are not prepared to wait 30โ40 min to retrieve. Heartbreak Hill tip: mile 20 is not actually the hardest โ it is the cumulative effect of miles 16โ21. The course opens up after mile 21 and the descent into Kenmore is a psychological gift. Cut-off time: 6 hours from the last wave start.
Morning
Wake by 06:30 for an 07:00 breakfast (Wave 1 starts at 09:32 for elite/invited; Wave 2 at 10:00; Wave 3 at 10:25). Eat familiar carbs: a plain bagel with peanut butter and banana, oatmeal with honey and a banana, or white toast. Drink 500โ750ml of water. Your hotel breakfast buffet will be open โ most Boston marathon hotels open at 06:00 on race Monday specifically for runners.
๐ก Eat your full breakfast even if nervous. Skipping it is the most common pre-race mistake. Your stomach will settle once you start running.
This is Boston's signature logistical feature. Runners take official BAA school buses from Boston Common (or other designated stops) to the Athletes' Village at Hopkinton High School โ a 40โ50 minute ride. Buses board from 06:30; runners MUST board by their assigned wave deadline (Wave 2: depart by 08:30; Wave 3: by 09:00). The Athletes' Village has food, drink, portable toilets, and baggage surrender โ leave your gear bag here (it does NOT go to the finish line; the 'Athlete Gear Check' bag must be surrendered in Hopkinton, not Boston).
๐ก CRITICAL: Boston has no bag drop at the finish line. Your post-race clothes must go in the clear BAA gear check bag surrendered at Hopkinton or the satellite athlete check area. Wear clothes you can discard at the start โ throwaway layers are everywhere on Hopkinton's grass. Bring toilet paper.
Afternoon
The course is net downhill (139m overall descent) but deceptive โ the first 10 miles are downhill, which destroys quads, setting up the Newton Hills. Mile 1โ10: Hopkinton through Ashland and Framingham, predominantly downhill โ resist going out too fast. Mile 10โ16: Natick and Wellesley, slight rollers. The Wellesley Scream Tunnel (mile 13) is deafening. Mile 16โ21: Newton Hills โ four hills culminating in Heartbreak Hill (mile 20โ21, a 27m climb). Pace evenly through Newton; do NOT surge on the downhills. Mile 21โ26.2: Kenmore Square, the Citgo sign (one mile to go), onto Boylston Street โ the most electric stretch in running.
๐ก The Newton Hills (mile 16โ21) are the race. Run them by effort, not pace. Save something for Boylston โ you will want to run strong on that final stretch.
After crossing the finish line, collect your unicorn finisher medal (the iconic BAA unicorn), mylar blanket, and finisher's gear bag. The post-race area extends down Boylston to the gear bag retrieval area (takes 20โ40 min). Family reunion area is organised by bib number last-initial letters along Commonwealth Avenue. Thousands of finishers crowd the streets โ agree a meeting point in advance.
๐ก The Green Line and Orange Line will be extremely crowded post-race. Consider pre-arranging a rideshare or walking the 10โ15 minutes to your Back Bay hotel โ it is close.
Evening
Boston's seafood is world class. Neptune Oyster in the North End, Legal Sea Foods on Boylston Street, or Island Creek Oyster Bar in Kenmore Square are all superb. For post-race recovery, order New England clam chowder (sodium + warmth), grilled fish (lean protein), and chowder bread bowl or a cup of rice or potatoes. Avoid alcohol tonight โ rehydrate first.
๐ก Reserve in advance โ marathon Monday night is one of the busiest restaurant nights in Boston's year. Legal Sea Foods accepts walk-ins but waits can be 60+ minutes post-race.
Where to eat
Pre-race hotel breakfast: Plain bagel, peanut butter, banana, water, and black coffee. No dairy, no eggs if your stomach is sensitive. Keep it simple.
Athletes' Village and finish pack: Athletes' Village provides bagels, peanut butter, bananas, and water in Hopkinton. Finish pack includes banana, yoghurt, crackers, and water.
Boston seafood recovery dinner: Clam chowder is the perfect recovery: sodium, warmth, and cream for calories. Follow with grilled fish and bread.
Recovery & Departure
Morning
The Freedom Trail is a 2.5-mile red-brick line through Boston's historic core. Post-race, do only the first section: Boston Common โ State House โ Park Street Church โ Granary Burying Ground โ King's Chapel โ Old Corner Bookstore โ Old South Meeting House. This is 1.2 miles of flat, well-paved walking โ ideal for post-race legs. Take it slowly and enjoy the history.
๐ก The NPS (National Park Service) Freedom Trail walking tour is free and departs from the Boston Common Visitor Center. Guides are knowledgeable and entertaining.
Take the Red Line from Park Street to Harvard Square (20 min). A gentle stroll through Harvard Yard, a coffee at Brattle Street's Cafe Algiers or Mr Bartley's for a famous burger โ the perfect low-key recovery morning if your legs feel better than expected. Alternatively, stay in Back Bay and rest.
Afternoon
Newbury Street in Back Bay is Boston's premier shopping street โ boutiques, bakeries, and coffee shops in elegant brownstone buildings. Pick up official Boston Marathon merchandise (available year-round at the BAA store) and browse at a comfortable pace. Sit outside if the April sun is warm.
๐ก Official Boston Marathon merchandise sells out during race week. If you want a particular item, buy it at the Expo on Day 1.
Take the Green Line to Boylston or Back Bay Station, then transfer to the Orange Line to Downtown Crossing, then Red Line to South Station for the Silver Line SL1 to the airport (free). Or take a rideshare from your hotel โ 15โ20 minutes and $25โ35. Allow 2.5 hours before departure for international flights, 90 minutes for domestic.
๐ก Patriots' Day Monday means the city is busy all day. On Tuesday, traffic is lighter โ but the subway is still the most predictable option.
Evening
Terminal E has Legal Sea Foods airside โ New England clam chowder and a lobster roll is a fittingly Bostonian farewell. Terminal B and C have a range of American options including Dunkin' (obligatory) and a proper sit-down bar.
Where to eat
Hotel breakfast: Full recovery breakfast: eggs, toast, fruit, orange juice, coffee. Eat more than you think you need โ DOMS sets in hard on Day 3.
Newbury Street cafรฉ or Au Bon Pain: A proper sandwich at Parish Cafรฉ on Boylston (famous for chef-designed sandwiches) is a great final Boston meal before the airport.
Logan Airport โ Legal Sea Foods or terminal bar: Clam chowder again โ you are in Boston. This is legally required.

๐จ Where to stay
Back Bay โ specifically within 4 blocks of Copley Square โ is the ideal base. The Hynes Expo, the finish line, and excellent restaurants are all walkable. ๐๏ธ Ticket advice
Boston requires a qualifying time (BQ) from a certified marathon within the previous 18 months. BQ standards vary by age and gender (e.g., 18โ34M: 3:00:00; 18โ34F: 3:30:00 โ check the BAA website for exact standards). After qualifying, you must register through the BAA in September for the following April race โ registration fills within days even with a qualifying time. Charity entries are available for those who do not meet BQ standards (~$5,000 fundraising minimum through official BAA charity partners).
๐ฐ Estimated budget
$1,400 per person
Excludes flights and event tickets
Local tips
- ยทPatriots' Day Monday is a Massachusetts state holiday โ the city shuts down for the marathon. The Red Sox play a 11:05am home game at Fenway Park; many runners and spectators combine both events.
- ยทWear throwaway clothes (old sweatshirt, bin bag poncho) in the Athletes' Village at Hopkinton โ it can be cold and wet waiting 60โ90 min for your wave. Discard at the start line.
- ยทThe Wellesley Scream Tunnel (mile 13, Wellesley College) is one of the loudest spectator sections in world sport โ use it for an energy boost, not a pace boost.
- ยทHeartbreak Hill is at mile 20โ21, not the end of the race. The descent after it is equally important to manage โ do not surge immediately after the summit.
- ยทLoad the official Boston Marathon app โ it provides live tracking, corral information, and weather updates updated hourly on race day.
