The Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon is one of the world's fastest marathon courses โ a flat, sea-level, wide-road sprint along Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai's famous superhighway flanked by the world's most dramatic skyline. January conditions (18โ24ยฐC) are near-perfect, and the large prize money attracts the world's fastest Ethiopians and Kenyans, creating an electric atmosphere of speed. For amateur runners it offers ideal PB-chasing conditions: no hills, no extreme weather, an impeccably organised event, and the visual spectacle of running through the heart of one of the world's most ambitious cities. The race is a highlight of Dubai's January events calendar.
Your 3-day itinerary
Arrival & Race Expo
UAE regulations require you to carry your passport as ID. Make photocopies and keep them separately. The Dubai Marathon race packet includes a bib, chip, finisher T-shirt (standard in UAE races), and a participant guide โ check this guide carefully for the shuttle bus schedule from hotels to the start area.
Morning
Dubai International is one of the world's busiest airports and a seamless transit hub. Terminal 1 handles most international airlines; Terminal 3 is Emirates. The airport metro (Red Line) connects directly to the city. Customs and immigration are efficient but can be busy on Friday mornings โ allow 90 minutes from landing.
๐ก The Dubai Metro Red Line from the airport to Union Station (for Deira hotels) or BurJuman (for Bur Dubai) costs under $2 USD. For Downtown Dubai or DIFC, take the metro to Dubai Mall/Burj Khalifa station. Taxis are abundant and metered โ approximately $10โ20 to central hotels.
Downtown Dubai โ home to the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, and Dubai Fountain โ is the most convenient base for the marathon. DIFC (Dubai International Financial Centre) is equally well-located. Both are within 2km of the Sheikh Zayed Road course. Upscale options include the Address Boulevard, Vida Downtown, or any DIFC hotel.
๐ก Request a high floor for skyline views. Downtown hotels fill quickly in January โ race weekend coincides with peak tourist season. Book 4โ6 months in advance.
Afternoon
The official expo is held at Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), a landmark convention complex on Sheikh Zayed Road โ you will run past it on race day. Bib collection and timing chip pickup are mandatory at the expo. International runners should bring their passport (UAE standard for identity verification) and registration confirmation.
๐ก DWTC metro station is on the Red Line โ a 3-minute metro ride from most Downtown hotels. Go on Friday afternoon rather than Saturday to avoid heavy expo crowds. The merchandise stand stocks limited Dubai Marathon apparel โ popular items sell out.
Take a taxi or metro along Sheikh Zayed Road to familiarise yourself with the course. The road is flanked by the Burj Khalifa, the DIFC towers, the Emirates Towers, and the World Trade Centre โ landmarks you will pass at race pace. The course is completely flat, wide, and smooth โ ideal for PB conditions.
๐ก Sheikh Zayed Road is a 10-lane highway โ do not attempt to walk it outside designated areas. Use the metro or a taxi for the preview and identify the spectator access points for your supporters.
Evening
Dubai has world-class Lebanese cuisine that is perfect for carb-loading: mana'eesh, hummus with pita bread, kibbeh, rice dishes, and mezze. Alternatively, excellent Italian restaurants in Downtown and DIFC serve pre-race pasta. Avoid heavy grills, alcohol, and rich sauces. End with dates โ Dubai's traditional energy food and a perfect glycogen-loading snack.
๐ก Operation Falafel (multiple locations) does brilliant Lebanese comfort food. Carluccio's in Dubai Mall is a solid Italian option for carb-heavy pasta dishes. Both are accessible from Downtown hotels.
Where to eat
Airport or in-flight breakfast: Emirates Lounge at DXB is excellent if you have access. Otherwise grab something familiar at the arrival level.
Dubai Mall food court or nearby cafe lunch: Dubai Mall's basement food court has excellent, inexpensive options including Lebanese, Thai, Indian, and pasta. Ideal post-expo fuelling.
Lebanese carb-load dinner โ Downtown Dubai: Lebanese rice dishes and pita-based mezze are excellent carbohydrate sources. Avoid the shawarma โ too much fat and protein for a carb-load meal.
Race Day โ Sheikh Zayed Road
Start time: 06:30 AM, with waves released at 5-minute intervals. Elite men start first, followed by elite women, then mass runners in seeded waves. Wave assignment is based on predicted finish time โ submit an honest estimate at registration for accurate seeding. Course cutoff: 6 hours (12:30 PM finish deadline). The finish line proximity to the historic Al Seef Creek waterfront provides a striking contrast to the ultra-modern Sheikh Zayed Road course โ you run from the future into the past. Key spectator points: Emirates Towers junction (km 15), DIFC (km 20), and the final stretch along Al Fahidi Historical District. The elite field here is genuinely world-class โ watch the lead pack depart and prepare to be astonished by their pace.
Morning
Wake 3 hours before your wave start. Eat a familiar, easily digestible breakfast: white toast with jam, banana and rice cakes, or plain porridge. Dubai Marathon typically starts at 06:30 AM โ a 03:30 AM wake-up is necessary. Lay all race gear out the night before.
๐ก January mornings in Dubai start cool (around 16โ18ยฐC) but warm up by 09:00. Plan your clothing for a cool start and warm finish โ arm warmers you can remove mid-race are ideal.
The race start is near Jumeirah, with runners heading southeast along Sheikh Zayed Road toward the finish near the Dubai Creek area. Official shuttle buses depart from designated hotels โ check the participant guide for your nearest shuttle stop. Taxis also cluster near major hotels from 04:30 AM on race day.
๐ก Take the shuttle bus if available โ traffic management on Sheikh Zayed Road on race morning is complex and individual taxis can be stuck for long periods. Arrive at the start 60 minutes before your wave.
Afternoon
The course runs the length of Sheikh Zayed Road โ the spine of modern Dubai โ with the Burj Khalifa, DIFC twin towers, Emirates Towers, and Jumeirah mosque all visible from the route. The road is immaculately surfaced and completely flat, making it one of the world's fastest courses. Elite runners from Ethiopia and Kenya regularly post sub-2:05 times here. The final kilometres turn into the historic Bur Dubai area, finishing near Al Seef.
๐ก The course is fast but exposed โ after 09:00 the temperature rises quickly. Execute your pacing plan conservatively in the first half. Drink at every water station from km 10 onward. The wide road makes weaving unnecessary โ find your pace and run a straight line.
Cross the finish line, collect your medal, finisher T-shirt, and recovery bag. The finisher village is in the Al Seef waterfront area, with views of the historic Creek. Medical tents, massage stations, and food vendors are available. Dubai's efficient event management ensures the village is well-organised even for the fastest field in the world.
๐ก Change clothes immediately โ post-race cooling happens fast once you stop, and sweaty running kit in Dubai winds becomes cold quickly. The finisher village has good food and isotonic drinks โ do not skip the nutrition immediately post-race.
Evening
Dubai's Lebanese restaurants are genuinely world-class โ the large Lebanese expat community ensures authenticity. A mezze spread of hummus, tabbouleh, grilled chicken, kibbeh, and rice is a perfect recovery meal: varied protein, carbohydrates, and antioxidants. Freshly squeezed lemon juice and iced water for rehydration.
๐ก Bait Al Mandi in Oud Metha or any Lebanese restaurant in Jumeirah Beach Road serve excellent traditional mezze. Alternatively, indulge in a room service meal at your hotel โ after a marathon, sometimes the best restaurant is your own bed.
Where to eat
Pre-race breakfast โ hotel toast or porridge: Eat by 03:30 for a 06:30 start. Keep it identical to your long-run breakfast. Dates are excellent natural pre-race fuel.
Finisher village recovery nutrition: Consume provided recovery nutrition within 30 minutes of finishing. Banana + isotonic drink as the minimum.
Lebanese recovery dinner โ Downtown Dubai: Lebanese mezze provides excellent protein diversity (chickpeas, meat, labneh) and carbohydrates (pita, rice). Anti-inflammatory parsley in tabbouleh is a post-marathon bonus.
Recovery & Departure
Morning
The Burj Khalifa is the world's tallest building at 828 metres. The At The Top observation deck (Level 124, 452m) offers unparalleled 360-degree views over Dubai, the desert, and the Arabian Gulf. Lifts ascend in 60 seconds. You ran past the base of this building yesterday โ now look down at the route.
๐ก Book At The Top tickets online at least 3 days in advance โ walk-up tickets cost almost double. Morning slots offer the clearest visibility before the afternoon heat haze develops. The ticket includes Dubai Fountain viewing from the base.
The Dubai Museum inside the Al Fahidi Fort (built 1787) tells the story of Dubai's transformation from a small fishing village to a global megalopolis in under 70 years. The museum is entirely indoors, air-conditioned, and involves almost no walking โ ideal for post-marathon legs. Entry costs just $1 USD.
๐ก The Al Fahidi Historical District surrounding the museum has excellent wind-tower architecture photography opportunities. The walk from Burj Khalifa to Al Fahidi via the Dubai Canal takes 30 minutes at tourist pace.
Afternoon
Cross the Creek by abra (traditional water taxi, $1 USD) from Al Fahidi to Deira. Visit the Gold Souk โ 350+ jewellery retailers in a covered arcade with more gold per square metre than anywhere outside a central bank vault โ and the adjacent Spice Souk with piles of saffron, frankincense, cardamom, and dried rose petals.
๐ก Bargaining is expected and welcomed at the souks โ start at 40% of the asking price. Bring cash (AED). The abra water taxi across the Creek is one of Dubai's most authentic experiences and costs only 1 AED (about $0.25 USD).
Allow 3 hours before international departure โ DXB is enormous and immigration can be slow. Take the metro Red Line from Union or BurJuman station. Terminal 3 (Emirates) is on the metro; Terminals 1 and 2 require a shuttle within the airport.
๐ก DXB has excellent duty-free and airside dining โ if time allows, browse the arrivals-level Al Baik (Saudi fast food institution) or the airside restaurants in Terminal 3. Allow extra time for the long walk to gates in Terminal 3.
Evening
Board your return flight. DXB is an Emirates hub with connections to virtually every major city worldwide. Compression socks are essential.
๐ก Emirates Economy class serves excellent meals. If transiting through DXB again on a future trip, the Emirates Lounge access (with eligible credit cards) is one of the best airport lounges in the world.
Where to eat
Hotel breakfast โ international buffet: Dubai hotels offer exceptional breakfast buffets. Load up on eggs, labneh, shakshuka, and fresh juice for recovery nutrition.
Deira lunch โ Al Bait Al Qadeem or souk cafe: Deira has excellent inexpensive Emirati and South Asian restaurants. Try a fresh lamb machboos (spiced rice) or a simple shawarma plate.
Airport dinner โ DXB Terminal 3 airside: DXB airside has excellent options including Shake Shack, Nando's, and multiple sit-down restaurants in both T1 and T3.
