Qatar Grand Prix 2026

Twilight racing under floodlights, desert heat, and the electric atmosphere of the Lusail smart city.

Sun, 8 Mar 2026 Lusail International Circuit, Lusail 4 days · arrive Sat, 7 Mar 2026

The Lusail International Circuit hosts MotoGP's twilight spectacle — a race that starts at 19:00 local time under a blaze of LED floodlights as the desert sky turns deep orange. The circuit sits 25 km north of Doha in the Lusail smart city district, a purpose-built urban development rising from the sands. Stay in Doha and commute to the circuit: the city's gleaming waterfront, world-class museums, and Souq Waqif provide a rich cultural backdrop between sessions.

Your 4-day itinerary

1

Arrival & Souq Waqif Evening

~$178

Morning

Arrive Hamad International Airport2 hrs$35

Fly into DOH. Hamad International is consistently ranked among the world's best airports — allow time to explore the terminal. Pre-book a limousine or private transfer to your Doha hotel; the trip from HIA to West Bay or Katara takes 20–30 minutes.

💡 The Karwa taxi app or pre-booked hotel transfers are more reliable than kerb taxis at HIA.

Check in and settle1 hr

Check into your hotel in Katara, West Bay, or Lusail Marina. All three areas are comfortable bases with easy access to the circuit. Freshen up — Qatar in March sits at 25–32°C during the day.

Afternoon

Museum of Islamic Art (first look)2 hrs

If arriving early enough, visit MIA — I.M. Pei's masterwork on its own promontory jutting into Doha Bay. The collection spans 1,400 years of Islamic civilisation. Allow at least 90 minutes for the permanent galleries.

💡 Entry to MIA is free. The café terrace has one of Doha's great views across the bay.

Corniche walk1 hr

Stroll the 7 km Doha Corniche waterfront promenade from the Museum of Islamic Art towards West Bay's skyscraper skyline. The late-afternoon light turns the bay gold and the skyline glitters ahead.

Evening

Souq Waqif dinner2.5 hrs$45

Doha's old market, beautifully restored, is the city's social heart. Navigate the labyrinthine lanes to find a traditional Qatari restaurant — Al Aker or Al Tawash serve excellent machboos (spiced rice with lamb) and fresh seafood. The atmosphere after 20:00, with the muezzin call echoing and lanterns glowing, is unforgettable.

💡 Qatar is a dry country. Non-alcoholic rose sherbets and fresh juices are excellent here — don't look for alcohol.

Where to eat

Airport café or hotel breakfastbreakfast· $18
Al Mourjan Waterfront Restaurantlunch· $35
Al Tawash, Souq Waqifdinner· $45

Airport café or hotel breakfast: Hamad Airport has excellent F&B options airside if your flight arrives at breakfast time.

Al Mourjan Waterfront Restaurant: On the Corniche — excellent mezze and grilled fish with bay views.

Al Tawash, Souq Waqif: Try machboos al dajaj (chicken) and finish with luqaimat dumplings in date syrup.

2

Free Practice Day — Circuit & Katara Cultural Village

~$250

Morning

Transfer to Lusail International Circuit45 mins$22

Depart hotel by 08:30. The circuit is 25 km north of Doha in the Lusail district. Uber or Karwa taxis make the trip in 35–40 minutes outside rush hour. The circuit opens from 09:00 on practice days.

💡 Rideshares back to Doha after evening sessions can be scarce — book your return trip before you leave the hotel.

Circuit fan village & practice3 hrs$38

Lusail's fan village is impressive: sponsor activations, team merchandise trucks, and hospitality pavilions. FP1 starts around 10:45. The circuit has few natural elevation changes but the floodlight towers rising above the dunes make it visually striking even in daylight.

Afternoon

Free Practice 245 mins

FP2 runs at 15:00. Watch from the main grandstand to see the start-finish straight and the tight Turn 1 complex — the primary overtaking zone at Lusail. Teams are already tuning for the evening conditions; tyre behaviour in the cooling air is a key talking point.

💡 The track temperature drops dramatically from 15:00 to 19:00 — riders on hotter afternoon rubber often lose time. It explains the qualifying drama.

Katara Cultural Village2 hrs

Return to Doha and spend the late afternoon at Katara, a purpose-built cultural district on the seafront. The amphitheatre, traditional Qatari falconry displays, and the stunning tiled mosque are all worth exploring. The sunset here, with dhows in the bay, is beautiful.

Evening

Lusail Marina waterfront dinner2 hrs$55

Lusail Marina, 2 km from the circuit, is a striking development of canal-side restaurants and promenades. Dine at one of the waterfront terraces — Crust, Hutong, or Nusret Doha are all well-regarded. The marina is lively on practice evenings as teams and fans gather.

Where to eat

Hotel breakfastbreakfast· $22
Circuit food courtlunch· $18
Lusail Marina restaurantdinner· $55

Hotel breakfast: Doha hotels do excellent buffet breakfasts — worth it before a long day at the circuit.

Circuit food court: Halal food stalls only at the circuit — expect shawarma, grilled chicken, and Arabic rice dishes.

Lusail Marina restaurant: Book ahead for marina-side tables — popular with the MotoGP paddock crowd.

3

Sprint & Qualifying — Museum of Islamic Art

~$243

Morning

Museum of Islamic Art deep visit2 hrs

Spend the morning properly at MIA before the circuit schedule begins. The Islamic calligraphy galleries, the Qur'an manuscripts room, and the rooftop terrace are all unmissable. The museum shop sells excellent Arabic design books and ceramics.

💡 The museum café serves excellent cardamom coffee and date pastries — arrive before 10:00 when the tour groups descend.

Traditional hammam1.5 hrs$65

Book a session at one of Doha's traditional hammam experiences — the Bayt Sadu Cultural House or a hotel spa hammam. A full scrub, steam, and massage is a perfect mid-trip reset before the electric atmosphere of Sprint + Qualifying day.

Afternoon

MotoGP Sprint Race30 mins

Transfer to the circuit for the Sprint Race (typically 15:00 local time). The desert heat is still intense — the main grandstand is partially shaded and has excellent sight lines to Turn 1 and the start-finish straight. The Sprint compresses all the drama of a full race into 12 high-speed laps.

💡 Wear light, loose clothing and bring a hat and sunscreen — the walk from the car park to the grandstand is exposed.

MotoGP Qualifying30 mins

Q1 and Q2 run in the late afternoon as temperatures drop. Lusail qualifying is legendary for last-lap heroics — the cooling track gives riders grip they didn't have earlier in the session, creating dramatic eleventh-hour lap improvements.

💡 Stay until the very last flying lap — the final-second pole position swaps at Lusail are a circuit tradition.

Evening

Fan zone & circuit atmosphere1.5 hrs

After qualifying the fan village lights up properly as the floodlights come on. The circuit looks spectacular at night — walk the perimeter to see the track under full illumination. This is the preview of what tomorrow's race will look and feel like.

Where to eat

MIA cafébreakfast· $15
Hotel lunch or Katara cafélunch· $25
Circuit food stallsdinner· $18

MIA café: Cardamom coffee and kaak biscuits in the museum courtyard café.

Circuit food stalls: Shawarma and mezze inside the circuit — eat before the qualifying session to avoid evening queues.

4

Race Day — Twilight Race & Desert Atmosphere

~$242

Race start is 19:00 local Doha time (UTC+3). Gates open at 14:00 on race day. The circuit shuttle from Lusail LRT station runs from 15:00 — confirm the schedule on the MotoGP app. Book your return transfer before leaving the hotel.

Morning

Relaxed morning at the hotel2 hrs

Race day is a late start — the twilight race begins at 19:00 local time, so there is no need for an early circuit departure. Use the morning to rest by the hotel pool or do any remaining shopping at the Pearl-Qatar.

The Pearl-Qatar exploration2 hrs

The Pearl is Doha's luxury artificial island — a Venice-inspired canal district with yacht berths, designer boutiques, and rooftop cafés. It is 5 minutes from West Bay hotels and perfect for a relaxed mid-morning stroll before the build-up to race day.

💡 The Pearl's Medina Centrale has excellent Arabic coffee and almond pastry shops.

Afternoon

Early circuit arrival and atmosphere build3 hrs

Arrive at Lusail by 15:00 to experience the race-day build-up. As the sun drops towards the dunes, the floodlights begin their warm-up cycle and the crowd swells. Moto2 and Moto3 races run in the late afternoon. The pre-race excitement under the desert sunset is unique in world sport.

💡 Position yourself on the inside of Turn 16 for the best view of the floodlit back straight complex.

MotoGP Race — 19:00 twilight start45 mins

Race start is 19:00. By then the track temperature is 30°C, the air is 26°C, and the LED floodlights turn the circuit into a stadium. 22 laps of spectacularly fast MotoGP racing under the Qatar night sky.

💡 The sight of 20+ MotoGP bikes going flat-out down the back straight at 340 km/h under floodlights, visible for miles, is one of motorsport's great images.

Evening

Post-race Corniche walk & final dinner2 hrs$70

After the podium ceremony, return to Doha for a final evening Corniche walk. The West Bay skyline reflected in the bay at midnight is spectacular. Dine at Nobu Doha or La Mar at the Four Seasons for a celebratory late dinner — both welcome diners after 22:00.
