Silverstone Circuit is MotoGP's British home, set in the heart of the Northamptonshire countryside. The UK round always draws a passionate and knowledgeable crowd from across Europe. The circuit is fast and technical, and the surrounding area — from the Cotswolds to Oxford to London — gives you extraordinary options beyond race day.
Your 4-day itinerary
Arrival & South England Exploration
Morning
Heathrow (LHR) is 100 km south of Silverstone (1.5 hrs by car or hire car). Birmingham Airport (BHX) is only 45 km away and often more convenient. Rail options are limited to Silverstone on non-race days — hire car recommended.
💡 Birmingham Airport is significantly easier for Silverstone than Heathrow — check flights there first.
Oxford is 30 km south of Silverstone — an ideal stopping point on the drive. Walk the high street, visit Christ Church College (featured in Harry Potter filming), and have lunch at The Eagle and Child pub where CS Lewis and Tolkien used to drink.
Afternoon
Accommodation near Silverstone is extremely limited. Most fans stay in Northampton (12 km), Milton Keynes (25 km), or Oxford. Hire car is essential for the circuit.
💡 Book your accommodation and hire car 3 months in advance minimum — race weekend availability around Silverstone disappears fast.
Friday free practice. The Silverstone paddock is world-class — very accessible fan zones, team merchandise trucks, and simulator experiences in the paddock area.
Evening
Northampton has good British pub dining. The Guildhall area has several recommended pubs serving classic British food — steak and ale pie, fish and chips, proper Sunday roast (order it even on a Friday).

Practice & Cotswolds Drive
Morning
Friday free practice. Silverstone's Wing building has excellent grandstand views over the complex's pit straight. The Vale section (Turns 14–15) is a good standing area for watching high-speed corner entry.
💡 August in England means weather can change rapidly — carry a waterproof jacket to the circuit every day.
Afternoon
The Cotswolds are 30 km west of Silverstone — the most beautiful English countryside. Bourton-on-the-Water, Burford, and Chipping Campden are quintessential English villages with honey-coloured stone buildings, tea shops, and complete absence of anything urban.
Evening
The Cotswolds are famous for their gastropubs. The Lamb Inn at Burford and The Kings Head at Bledington both serve exceptional food. Book ahead — they fill fast on summer evenings.
Where to eat
Cotswolds gastropub: Reserve in advance.
Sprint & Qualifying
Afternoon
Saturday features the Sprint Race and qualifying. Silverstone's International Pits Straight grandstand gives the best view of the race start and the iconic Copse corner — the fastest corner in MotoGP at over 280 km/h.
💡 Copse corner is where Silverstone's fastest lap moments happen — try to position yourself there for qualifying when riders push the absolute limit.
Evening
Join fellow fans at the Silverstone pub village (within the circuit grounds) or drive to Towcester for evening drinks and food. The atmosphere after qualifying is always excellent — race predictions and bar arguments are compulsory.
Where to eat
Race Day
Race start 14:00. British August weather is famously unpredictable — the circuit has been both baking hot and soaking wet on race day. Check the forecast Friday night and pack accordingly. Silverstone post-race traffic on the A43 can take 2 hours to clear — consider waiting 45 minutes in the circuit before driving out.
Morning
Silverstone's race day parking is extensive but fills from 08:00. The Wing complex and Luffield grandstands offer different perspectives on the circuit. The pre-race grid walk (available with certain ticket tiers) is a genuine highlight.
Afternoon
Race start at 14:00 local time. 20 laps of the 5.9 km circuit. Silverstone's high-speed layout means the full lap takes just over 2 minutes — this is one of the fastest and most dramatic circuits on the calendar.
💡 The post-race lap of honour is always worth staying for — riders often do extra laps acknowledging the British crowd.
Evening
After the race, head to Birmingham (BHX) for evening flights or stay overnight and depart Monday morning from London or Birmingham.
Where to eat
Circuit food court: Race day food sells out by 13:00 for most popular stalls — eat early.
Practical info
✈️ Getting there
Fly into Birmingham (BHX, 45 km) or London Heathrow (LHR, 100 km). Hire car is strongly recommended — Silverstone is in rural Northamptonshire with no direct rail link to the circuit. On race day, park and ride services operate from Northampton and Milton Keynes.
🏨 Where to stay
Book 3 months ahead minimum. Northampton (12 km), Milton Keynes (25 km), and Banbury (20 km) are the best base options. Farm camping sites around the circuit also operate race weekend — good for atmosphere but basic facilities.
🎟️ Ticket advice
General admission (Infield) is cheapest but you cover more ground on foot. The Wing grandstand (pit straight) offers the best panoramic view. Paddock Club hospitality is world-class but expensive ($500+/day). Book via motogp.com.
