🌅 Morning
Arrive Schiphol, rent bikes
Amsterdam Centraal, Amsterdam
Arrive at Amsterdam Schiphol, take the train to Amsterdam Centraal (17 min, €4.70), then rent bikes for the full stay from OV-Fiets (Dutch public bike system, €3.85/day with OV-chipkaart) or MacBike rental shop (€14/day with lock). Rent from Day 1 — biking everywhere saves time and money.
Star Bikes Rental (Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 86) is the best value bike rental — €10/day, good quality bikes with locks. Open 9am–6pm.
☀️ Afternoon
Canal ring cycling — Herengracht, Keizersgracht, Prinsengracht
Canal Ring, Amsterdam
The three main canals of Amsterdam's UNESCO-listed canal ring — cycle all three end-to-end for a complete impression of Amsterdam's 17th-century merchant city. The Jordaan neighbourhood lanes off Prinsengracht are the best discovery.
Cyclists have absolute priority in Amsterdam — but so do tram tracks. Be careful crossing the tram rails at angles (tyres can jam). Look before cycling — Dutch cyclists signal with arm movements.
🍽️ Meals
Brouwerij 't IJ, Funenkade
Dutch · $25 · Craft brewery inside a 1814 windmill — cycle there (10 minutes from the centre). The Natte dubbel and Zatte tripel are the two beers.

Cycle to Keukenhof — 35km route via Aalsmeer
Keukenhof, Stationsweg 166A, Lisse
The 35km cycle from Amsterdam to Keukenhof (through the tulip bulb fields south of Schiphol) is the definitive spring cycling route in the Netherlands. In April–May, the fields are striped with red, yellow, purple, and orange tulips for 5km on both sides of the road.
Keukenhof entrance: €19 adult (pre-book online — no discount at the gate and it sells out). The best photo fields are between Lisse and Hillegom — south of Keukenhof on the Heereweg road.
☀️ Afternoon
Return cycle via Haarlem
Haarlem, North Holland, Netherlands
Return route via Haarlem (one of the Netherlands' most beautiful cities, 20km from Amsterdam) — the Grote Kerk van Haarlem (15th century), Jopenkerk craft brewery, and the best cheese shop in the Netherlands (De Kaaskamer). Add 20km for this detour.
🍽️ Meals
Jopenkerk, Haarlem
Dutch/Beer · $22 · Church converted to craft brewery. The Koyt (herb beer from a medieval recipe) is extraordinary. Cycle-friendly café with bike parking outside.
Windmills of Zaanse Schans & Edam
Saturday, April 17
Est. spend
$100
per person
🌅 Morning
Cycle north to Zaanse Schans (15km)
Zaanse Schans, Schansend 7, Zaandam
The open-air village of historic windmills, wooden houses, and traditional Dutch crafts — the most-visited tourist attraction outside Amsterdam. By bike from Amsterdam's north ferry takes 45 minutes on the flat cycle path. The working windmills and the chocolate factory demonstrate authentic Dutch manufacturing.
Arrive by 9am before the tour buses. The Albert Heijn supermarket beside the windmills is the original AH (founded 1887 in this exact location) — historical supermarket tourism.
☀️ Afternoon
Cycle Edam — the cheese village
Edam, North Holland, Netherlands
From Zaanse Schans, cycle 25km east along the IJsselmeer dyke to Edam — the picturesque village famous for its red-wax cheese balls exported worldwide since the 14th century. The cheese market (Thursday mornings, May–August) has carriers in traditional costume.
The cycle from Zaanse Schans to Edam along the dyke road is one of the finest Dutch cycling routes — the IJsselmeer on one side, polders on the other, and wind turbines in every direction.
🍽️ Meals
De Fortuna, Edam
Dutch · $35 · Best restaurant in Edam — in a waterside canal house. The local Edam cheese with mustard and apple is the starter. The smoked eel is a regional delicacy.
Amsterdam Neighbourhood Deep Dive & Departure

🌅 Morning
Dawn canal cycling at 6am
Canal Ring, Amsterdam
Amsterdam at 6am before the tourists and commuters arrive — the canal ring, Jordaan, and the flower market all accessible with no crowds. The light on the water and the reflections of the gabled houses are extraordinary.
The Reguliersgracht (where 7 bridges align in a row and are visible simultaneously) is the most beautiful canal view in Amsterdam — best at 7am with the reflections still.
☀️ Afternoon
Albert Cuyp Market and De Pijp
Albert Cuypstraat, De Pijp, Amsterdam
The Albert Cuypmarkt (300 stalls, Monday–Saturday) and the De Pijp neighbourhood local life — cycle through the market at walking pace, sample stroopwafels from the original stalls, buy Dutch herrings (matjes haring) from the fish vendors.
🍽️ Meals
Winkel 43, Noordermarkt
Dutch café · $15 · The best apple pie in Amsterdam, eaten at an outdoor table watching the Jordaan morning. The queue starts at 9am.

💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook
- Dutch cycling culture: signal with your arm before turning, don't cycle while looking at your phone (technically illegal), and ring your bell rather than shouting at pedestrians.
- The Dutch fietspaden (cycle paths) are often better maintained than the roads. The red asphalt indicates a dedicated cycle path — pedestrians should not be on it.
