Arrive & Table Mountain Summit Run
Tuesday, January 5
Est. spend
$155
per person
🌅 Morning
Arrive Cape Town International Airport
Cape Town International Airport
CPT is 20km from the city. Uber to the V&A Waterfront or City Bowl: R200–280 ($11–15). Cape Town is exceptional in January — the Cape Doctor (south-easterly wind) keeps the air clear and the mountain is often cloud-free.
☀️ Afternoon
Table Mountain hike — Platteklip Gorge
Platteklip Gorge trailhead, Tafelberg Rd, Cape Town
The most direct route up (2 hours, 700m elevation) through a deep sandstone gorge with views opening dramatically at the summit. The flat plateau with its extraordinary fynbos (Cape heathland plant community, found nowhere else on earth) covers the 3km summit walk. Take the cable car down.
The trail opens at 6am. Download the AllTrails map for the route. Bring water (2L minimum), sunscreen (UV is extreme in Cape Town summer), and a windproof layer for the summit wind.
🍽️ Meals
The Pot Luck Club, Woodstock
South African fusion · $60 · Luke Dale Roberts' tapas-style restaurant above The Test Kitchen. The sharing plates allow tasting the full range of Cape flavours.
Shark Cage Diving
Wednesday, January 6
Est. spend
$145
per person
🌅 Morning
Shark cage diving at Gansbaai
Gansbaai Harbour, Gansbaai, Western Cape
Great white shark cage diving at Dyer Island (2 hours from Cape Town) — the highest density of great white sharks in the world. The cage is submerged at the side of the boat while the sharks circle at snout distance. Marine Dynamics is the most reputable operator. From R2,200 ($120).
The cage diving requires cold water tolerance — the Atlantic here is 14–17°C even in summer. Wetsuits are provided. Sighting rate: 90%+ in peak season (April–September), lower in summer. Marine Dynamics is the most ethical operator — they don't use fish blood bait.
🍽️ Meals
Marine Dynamics lunch on boat, included
South African · $0 · Lunch included in the diving package.
Paragliding & Chapman's Peak
Thursday, January 7
Est. spend
$220
per person
🌅 Morning
Paragliding from Signal Hill
Signal Hill, Cape Town
Tandem paragliding from Signal Hill (349m) over Sea Point and Camps Bay — the tandem instructor launches you from the hillside, and you soar for 20–30 minutes over the Atlantic coast before landing on Camps Bay beach. From R1,100 ($60).
Cape Town Tandem Paragliding and Birdmen Paragliding are both licensed. The flight is entirely wind-dependent — rescheduling is common. The landing on Camps Bay beach is spectacular.
☀️ Afternoon
Chapman's Peak Drive and hike
Chapman's Peak Drive, Hout Bay, Cape Town
The 9km cliff-edge road between Noordhoek and Hout Bay — stop at every viewpoint, then park at Hout Bay and hike the Chapman's Peak summit (593m, 2.5 hours return) for the full coastal panorama without the cars.
The Chapman's Peak hike (from the Hout Bay side) is a strenuous scramble on the final section — proper shoes essential. The summit view over both sides of the peninsula is the best on the Cape.
🍽️ Meals
Harbour House, Kalk Bay
South African seafood · $55 · Cliff-edge seafood restaurant at the Kalk Bay harbour. The grilled snoek (Cape mackerel) and calamari are local specialities.
Kitesurfing at Bloubergstrand
Friday, January 8
Est. spend
$240
per person
🌅 Morning
Kitesurfing lesson — Bloubergstrand
Bloubergstrand Beach, Table Bay, Cape Town
Bloubergstrand (Big Bay) on the Atlantic coast north of Cape Town is one of the world's premier kitesurfing locations — consistent south-easterly wind, flat water in the lagoon, and the Table Mountain skyline as a backdrop. 2-day beginner course from R2,800 ($155) with Cape Sport Centre.
The Atlantic water at Bloubergstrand is cold (14–16°C) — a 3mm wetsuit is essential even in summer. The 2-day course gets you from zero to body dragging (first kite flight) — you'll be kitesurfing on Day 2.
☀️ Afternoon
Robben Island boat and view
Nelson Mandela Gateway, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town
The Robben Island ferry passes the island (30 minutes each way) even if not visiting the museum — the view of Table Mountain from the water with Robben Island in the foreground is one of the definitive Cape Town images. Ferry from Nelson Mandela Gateway: R380 ($21) including the island tour.
🍽️ Meals
La Mouette, Sea Point
South African · $60 · The best tasting menu restaurant in the Cape Town suburbs. The 5-course menu showcases seasonal Western Cape produce.
Sea Kayaking & Boulder's Beach Run
Saturday, January 9
Est. spend
$230
per person
🌅 Morning
Sea kayaking at Hout Bay — seal island
Hout Bay Harbour, Cape Town
Kayak from Hout Bay harbour to Seal Island — a 2km crossing to a rock covered in 60,000 Cape fur seals. The seals surface around the kayaks and the colony noise and smell is extraordinary. Kayak hire from Monkeyfish Kayak: R350 ($19).
The Cape fur seals are extremely playful — they'll surface next to the kayak and dive under repeatedly. Don't touch them (teeth).
☀️ Afternoon
Trail run — Cape Point loop
Cape Point, Table Mountain National Park
The Cape Point section of the Table Mountain National Park has 40km of trail running routes — the Cape Point lighthouse loop (12km, 2.5 hours) via the Cape of Good Hope passes clifftop fynbos and baboon-territory with Atlantic views on both sides.
The park entry (R353/$19) is valid for the full day. Download the AllTrails app for the specific route. Baboons are present throughout — don't run from them, don't have food visible.
🍽️ Meals
The Codfather, Camps Bay
South African seafood · $70 · Choose your fresh fish from the display case; it's cooked to order. The crayfish (rock lobster) at market price and the perlemoen (abalone) are the Cape delicacies.

🌅 Morning

Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, Tafelberg Rd, Cape Town

☀️ Afternoon
Surfing at Muizenberg
Muizenberg Beach, Cape Town
Muizenberg on the False Bay coast is the best beginner surf beach in South Africa — long, gentle waves, warm Atlantic water (18–22°C), and a full-service surf culture. Gary's Surf School and the Surf Emporium are the two main schools. 2-hour lesson: R500 ($27).

Before you go
📅 Best time to visit
November–April for the best adventure conditions — warm (22–28°C), Cape Doctor wind for kitesurfing and paragliding, and reliable shark diving conditions. May–October is the Cape Town winter — ideal for whale watching at Hermanus (July–November) but cooler for most outdoor activities.
🛂 Visas
Most Western nationalities (US, UK, EU, Australia, Canada) get a free 90-day stamp on arrival. No advance application required.
💱 Currency
South African Rand (ZAR). R18–19 per USD. Adventure activities are exceptional value compared to equivalent experiences in Europe or Australia.
🆘 Emergency numbers
police: 10111
ambulance: 10177
emergency: 112
💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook
- The Cape Doctor (south-easterly wind) blows strongest in November–February. It makes some beaches uncomfortable for sunbathing (particularly Clifton and Camps Bay) but is perfect for kitesurfing and paragliding. Expect 30–50km/h gusts on some days.
- The Atlantic ocean at Cape Town is cold (12–16°C) year-round due to the Benguela Current. The False Bay side (Muizenberg, Fish Hoek) is significantly warmer (18–22°C) — swim there if you want comfortable sea bathing.
