Dubai — Embarkation Day
Friday, January 15
Est. spend
$1600
per person
🌅 Morning
Dubai exploration before embarkation
Deira Gold Souk, Deira, Dubai
Port Rashid is in central Dubai — embarkation is typically at 3–5pm. Use the morning for: Deira Gold Souk (the world's largest gold market by display, open from 9am), the Dubai Creek abra (wooden boat) crossing (AED 1/$0.27), and the Spice Souk. This is the authentic pre-oil Dubai.
The Dubai Creek abra (traditional wooden boat) crossing costs AED 1 ($0.27) — one of the world's great bargain experiences. The creek separates Deira (old commercial Dubai) from Bur Dubai.
☀️ Afternoon
Board the cruise ship — Port Rashid, Dubai
Port Rashid, Bur Dubai, Dubai
Port Rashid is 15 minutes from the Dubai Creek area by taxi. The embarkation process (2–3pm) — explore the ship, attend the safety muster, and watch Dubai's skyline from the upper deck as the ship departs in the evening. The Dubai skyline from the water (Burj Khalifa visible from 50km) is extraordinary at dusk.
Cruise fare for 4-day UAE mini cruises starts from AED 1,500 ($410) per person inside cabin; AED 2,800 ($760) for balcony. MSC Cruises and Costa Cruises operate these routes. Book 2–3 months ahead.

🌅 Morning
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Mohammed Bin Zayed City, Abu Dhabi
The world's third-largest mosque (and the most beautiful by most measures) — pure white marble, 82 domes, 1,000 columns, and the world's largest hand-knotted carpet (5,627m²). Capacity 41,000 worshippers. Entry is free and open to non-Muslims. Dress code is enforced — abayas and head scarves provided at the entrance.
Arrive before 10am — the interior is most beautiful in morning light through the stained glass windows. The reflection pool on the north side gives the most photographed exterior angle. Free entry but modest dress is mandatory.
☀️ Afternoon
Louvre Abu Dhabi
Louvre Abu Dhabi, Saadiyat Island Cultural District, Abu Dhabi
Jean Nouvel's extraordinary museum — a 180m aluminium dome perforated with a geometric lattice that creates a 'rain of light' on the exhibits below. The universal museum concept traces human creativity across all civilisations simultaneously. The collection includes Leonardo da Vinci's La Belle Ferronnière (on long-term loan from the Louvre). Entry AED 63 ($17).
The building is as important as the collection. Walk around the exterior on the waterfront promenade and look up at the dome from below before entering.

Book the wildlife safari excursion through the ship's tour desk or directly with Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island. The jeep safari (2 hours) is the main attraction. The island also has excellent snorkelling from the beach.

💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook
- The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is the single finest building in the UAE — if time only allows one cultural site between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, this is it.
- The cruise terminal taxi ranks charge fixed rates — do not negotiate (price is on a board at the rank). Uber also works at all UAE ports.
