Dubai Luxury Shopping Weekend — 4 Days of Retail Excess

Four days built around the world's most spectacular retail environment — Dubai Mall (the world's largest), the Gold Souk at dawn, Mall of the Emirates, and the pop-up designer markets that only Dubai can produce. With enough desert and food to remind you why you came.

Dubai Mall & Downtown Arrival

per person

🌅 Morning

🚆

Arrive at DXB — Dubai Mall first stop

Dubai International Airport → Dubai Mall Metro

Dubai Mall is connected to the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro station. The mall is genuinely worth half a day as architecture, aquarium, and food destination before you get to the shopping.

💡

Metro Red Line from airport terminal to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station — AED 8 ($2.20). Much faster than taxi during morning rush.

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

Dubai Mall — full exploration

Downtown Dubai, Financial Centre Road

The world's largest mall by total area — 1,200 shops, the Dubai Aquarium (free to view from outside the tank), a functioning ice rink, a waterfall, and the souk section with authentic Gulf jewellery, spices, and textiles.

💡

The Souk section (lower ground floor, connected via bridge) has better quality and more authentic goods than the tourist souk at most hotels. The Kinokuniya bookshop is the best in the Middle East. The Fashion Avenue section (Level 2 bridge) has every luxury brand.

🌙 Evening

🍜

Burj Khalifa fountain show + Zuma dinner

Zuma Dubai, Gate Village Building 6, DIFC

The Dubai Fountain performs every 30 minutes from sunset — the Burj Lake terrace gives the best view for free. Then Zuma Dubai for dinner — Japanese robata grill, the best restaurant in Dubai for atmosphere and food quality.

💡

Book Zuma at least a week ahead. The rock shrimp tempura and miso black cod are non-negotiable. The lounge has excellent cocktails if the dining room is full.

🌅 Morning

🏛️

Deira Gold Souk — before 9am

Gold Souk, Sikkat Al Khail Rd, Deira

Over 300 jewellery shops in a covered arcade — the largest gold market outside India and China. At 8am it's quiet, the shopkeepers are setting up, and the gold catches the morning light before the tour groups arrive.

💡

Bargaining is mandatory — opening prices are typically 30–40% above what they'll accept. Walk away twice. The gold is certified (24K, 22K, 18K — marked clearly). A 22K gold bangle costs roughly AED 1,500–2,000 ($400–550) for a standard weight.

2hFree
🏛️

Deira Spice Souk — perfume and oud

Spice Souk, Al Ras, Deira

Adjacent to the Gold Souk — sacks of frankincense, rose water, dried limes, and the oud (agarwood) perfume oils unique to the Gulf. The best place in Dubai to buy authentic Arabic perfume.

💡

A small vial of genuine Arabian oud oil (AED 50–200) makes the most distinctive gift from Dubai. Ask the vendor to let you smell different grades. Amouage is the luxury perfume house to buy from for pre-bottled gift options.

1h$30

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

Mall of the Emirates — Harvey Nichols, Ski Dubai, and luxury

Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Barsha

Dubai's second-largest mall houses the world's first indoor ski slope (Ski Dubai) visible through glass windows from the mall, Harvey Nichols, and a concentration of mid-to-high end fashion in an easier layout than Dubai Mall.

💡

Ski Dubai passes start at AED 250 ($68) for 2 hours on the slopes with equipment. Unique experience — skiing in 40°C external heat. The snowpark (AED 150) is better for non-skiers.

3h$150

🌙 Evening

🍜

Dinner at Coya Dubai — rooftop

Four Seasons DIFC, Dubai

Peruvian-Japanese fusion at the top of the Four Seasons DIFC — one of Dubai's best dinner experiences with city views and the signature ceviche.

💡

The ceviche and anticuchos are essential. The pisco sour is the best in Dubai. Book ahead — the terrace fills by 8pm.

🌅 Morning

🏛️

Dubai Outlet Mall — designer discounts

Dubai Outlet Mall, Al Ain Road, Dubai

30km from downtown but worth the trip — 700 brand outlets with discounts of 30–90% on designer labels. Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH, Nike, Adidas, Burberry, Hugo Boss, and regional brands at genuine clearance prices.

💡

Take a taxi (AED 70–100 return) or the Dubai Outlet Mall shuttle from Dragon Mart Metro station. Go early — opens 10am, less crowded before noon. The Saks OFF 5TH section has the best luxury discounts.

3h$300

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

City Walk — premium open-air retail

City Walk, Al Wasl Road, Jumeirah

Dubai's most pleasant shopping destination — 500m of open-air streets with mid-to-luxury fashion, international restaurants, and the atmosphere of a European shopping district without the cold.

💡

More relaxed than the malls. The Green Planet (indoor rainforest), Cinema City Walk, and the independent boutiques on the upper levels. Good for gifts — Bateel dates, Patchi chocolate, regional craft shops.

2h$100

🌙 Evening

🎯

Desert safari — evening escape from the malls

Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (pickup from hotel)

After two days of retail, an evening desert safari resets everything — dune bashing, camel ride, sand boarding, and Bedouin camp dinner under the stars. The desert at night is the antidote to any amount of shopping.

💡

Book through Arabian Adventures or Platinum Heritage. Departs 3pm, returns 9pm. Dinner included. The contrast between morning outlet shopping and evening desert camp is one of Dubai's best experiences.

🏛️

Souvenir shopping — final morning

Souk Madinat Jumeirah, Jumeirah

For the best quality souvenirs: Camel Company at Souk Madinat Jumeirah (camel plush, copper items, traditional clothing), Al Nassma chocolate (camel milk), and Bateel for Medjool dates in gift boxes.

💡

Souk Madinat is waterway-connected traditional architecture — the best-designed shopping complex in Dubai. The view of Burj Al Arab from the terraces is included in the strolling.

2h$80

☀️ Afternoon

🚆

Dubai International Airport — duty free

Dubai International Airport

DXB's duty free is worth arriving 30 minutes earlier than usual — electronics, perfume, alcohol (to check), and the famous gold vending machines. Allow proper time.

💡

The Duty Free is post-security. Perfume prices are genuinely excellent (40–60% below retail for international brands). The 1kg Toblerone is ¥10,000 in Japan and AED 45 here. The gold vending machine is real but overpriced.

2hFree

🍽️ Meals

🌅

Brunch at Souk Madinat

International · $35 · The terrace restaurants at Souk Madinat Jumeirah have excellent brunch — the Burj Al Arab view is included in the meal price.

Before you go

📅 Best time to visit

November to March — temperatures 22–28°C, perfect for outdoor shopping at City Walk and Jumeirah. The Dubai Shopping Festival (January–February) adds additional discounts and events at all major malls. Summer (May–September): 40°C+ but everything is indoors and heavily air-conditioned.

🛂 Visas

Most Western nationalities receive a free 30-day Visa on Arrival. UK, EU, US, Australian, Canadian passport holders: visa-free. Always verify with UAE immigration before travelling.

💱 Currency

UAE Dirham (AED), pegged to USD at 3.67. The VAT refund scheme (Planet Tax Free) gives back 5% VAT on purchases over AED 250 at participating retailers — claim at the airport refund desk. Cards accepted everywhere.

🆘 Emergency numbers

police: 999

ambulance: 998

💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook

  • The VAT refund at Dubai Airport requires keeping all receipts and showing the original items. Allow 30 minutes at the Planet Tax Free desk before check-in.
  • Dubai Shopping Festival (January–February) has genuine discounts — not just marketing.
  • The Dubai weekend is Saturday–Sunday. Major malls are busiest Thursday evening and Friday afternoon.
  • Dress modestly in the Gold and Spice souks — shoulders and knees covered.
  • Careem and Uber both work well in Dubai and are significantly cheaper than official taxis for most journeys.
