Fiji is the South Pacific at its most accessible — 330 islands, some of the world's finest coral snorkelling in the Mamanuca and Yasawa groups, village kava ceremonies with complete strangers who become hosts, and the warmth of Fijian culture that makes 'Bula!' (hello) feel genuinely meant. Best April–October in the dry season.

🌅 Morning

🚆

Arrive Nadi International Airport

Nadi International Airport, Nadi, Viti Levu

NAN (Nadi) is Fiji's main international hub on Viti Levu's west coast. Taxis from the official stand cost FJD 25–35 ($11–16) to Port Denarau Marina (where island ferries depart). Book your Mamanuca island accommodation before arrival — boat transfers need advance booking.

💡

South Sea Cruises, Awesome Adventures, and Blue Lagoon Cruises all operate from Port Denarau (15 minutes from the airport). Book island transfers in advance — the 10am ferries fill up.

Garden of the Sleeping Giant

Garden of the Sleeping Giant, Nadi

20 minutes from Nadi — Sir Raymond Burr's (Perry Mason actor) private orchid collection bequeathed to Fiji, now a 50-acre garden with 2,000 orchid varieties and lily pond walkways. Entry FJD 25 ($11). A gentle acclimatisation to Fijian nature before the islands.

Ferry to Mamanuca Islands — Malolo or Castaway

Port Denarau Marina, Nadi

The 10am Yasawa Flyer (South Sea Cruises) departs Port Denarau and stops at Malolo Lailai, Castaway Island, and onwards to the Yasawa Islands. The Mamanuca group starts 20km from Nadi — white sand, coral gardens visible from the surface, and the water temperature 28°C year-round.

💡

Malolo Island Resort has the best house reef snorkelling in the Mamanucas. Castaway Island has the most beautiful beach. Book a 2-night bure (traditional Fijian cottage) in advance.

🏛️

Snorkelling the Mamanuca coral gardens

Mamanuca coral reefs, Fiji

The Mamanuca reefs have extraordinary coral density — hard and soft corals from 1–15m depth with turtles, reef sharks, and hundreds of tropical fish species. Most island resorts provide gear free to guests. The fringing reef 200m from the beach is the primary snorkel location.

💡

The best snorkelling in the Mamanucas is at Manta Ray Island (seasonal — Manta Rays present March–June) and the outer reef off Malolo Lailai.

🌅 Morning

🌊

Cloud 9 floating bar in the Mamanuca lagoon

Cloud 9, Mamanuca Group, Fiji

A two-storey floating platform 30km offshore — lap pool, bar, and the clearest water in the Mamanucas. Day trip from Port Denarau (FJD 75/$33 entry including lunch, FJD 45/$20 return transfer). One of the most unusual beach experiences in the South Pacific.

💡

The floating platform has a waterslide, a trampoline, and excellent snorkelling from the platform edge. The water around Cloud 9 is 30m deep — visibility extends the full depth.

5h$33

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

Yasawa Islands speedboat day trip

Yasawa Islands, Fiji

The Yasawas (a chain of 20 volcanic islands 80km north of Nadi) are the less-developed cousin of the Mamanucas — more remote, better beaches, and traditional villages. Day trips by speedboat from the Mamanucas: FJD 180 ($80) return from Malolo. The Blue Lagoon cave (Sawa-i-lau limestone cave) is the highlight.

💡

Sawa-i-lau cave (FJD 20 entry) has a subterranean chamber accessible by swimming through an underwater tunnel. The inner chamber has cave paintings from the original Fijian inhabitants.

4h$80

🍽️ Meals

🌙

Beachside lovo feast — island resort

Fijian · $0 · The traditional lovo (underground oven) feast on the beach — whole pig, chicken, cassava, and taro cooked in the ground for 3 hours. The best Fijian food.

⛴️Mamanuca → Cloud 9 → Mamanuca (day charter) · 30min each$20
Day 4

Village Kava Ceremony

Tuesday, May 4

Est. spend

$100

🌅 Morning

🏛️

Fijian village kava ceremony visit

Local Fijian village, Mamanuca/Yasawa

The sevusevu — the formal presentation of kava root to a village chief — is the correct way to visit a Fijian village. Your island resort can arrange a guided village visit to a local community. The kava ceremony (drinking the mildly narcotic pepper root infusion from coconut shell bowls in a circle) follows the presentation.

💡

Bring kava root (buy at Nadi market, FJD 15–25) as the sevusevu gift. The clap-sip-clap protocol for drinking is demonstrated. The kava has a mild numbing effect on the lips and a gentle relaxation. Three shells is polite.

☀️ Afternoon

🌊

Final reef snorkel and beach afternoon

Mamanuca Island resort

Last afternoon at the island — snorkel the house reef at low tide (best visibility), kayak the lagoon, or hammock between the palms.

Wednesday, May 5

Est. spend

$130

per person

🌅 Morning

🚆

Ferry return to Port Denarau

Mamanuca Island → Port Denarau

Morning ferry back to Port Denarau. Last morning at the island for one final snorkel.

2h$25

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

Nadi town market

Nadi Market, Nadi Town, Viti Levu

The Nadi Market (open daily) has the best Fijian produce — tropical fruit, fresh vegetables, meke performers, and the handicraft section with tanoa kava bowls, wood carvings, and tapa cloth at non-tourist prices.

💡

A tanoa (kava bowl) makes an excellent souvenir — buy a small one (FJD 30–50/$13–22) at the market rather than at airport gift shops.

2h$30

🍽️ Meals

☀️

Mama's Pizza, Nadi

Indo-Fijian · $12 · The Fijian Indian food (40% of Fiji's population descended from Indian indentured labourers brought by the British) is extraordinary — curries, roti, and dhal.

🚕Port Denarau → Nadi Market → Nadi Airport · 20min$20

Before you go

📅 Best time to visit

April–October: dry season, lower humidity, temperatures 24–28°C. November–March is the wet season — afternoon storms are common but the water is warmer (30°C) and the reefs are lush. Tropical cyclone season is December–April.

🛂 Visas

Fiji offers 4-month visa-free entry for most nationalities (US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, NZ). No advance application required.

💱 Currency

Fijian Dollar (FJD). 2.3 FJD per USD. Fiji is not cheap by Pacific standards — resort accommodation starts at FJD 400/$175/night. The budget option (Blue Lagoon Cruises dorm bunks on the Yasawa Flyer, $100/night all-inclusive) is excellent value.

💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook

  • Bula (BOO-lah) is the Fijian greeting and genuinely means everything — hello, goodbye, cheers, welcome. Use it freely and enthusiastically.
  • Fijian hospitality is real — if someone invites you to their home or village, the correct response is to accept. The sevusevu protocol makes the visit formal and respectful.
