Arrive at Interlaken via train from Zurich or Bern

Interlaken Ost/West train station

Interlaken has no major airport — most visitors arrive by train from Zurich (about 2 hours) or Bern (under an hour), both scenic rail journeys in their own right.

💡

A Swiss Travel Pass is genuinely worth it if doing multiple mountain excursions from Interlaken — it covers most trains, buses, and many cable cars.

🏛️

Harder Kulm funicular

Harder Kulm, Interlaken

A funicular railway climbing directly from town to a viewpoint with sweeping views over both Lake Thun and Lake Brienz simultaneously, plus the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks in the distance.

Cogwheel train to Jungfraujoch

Jungfraujoch, Bernese Alps

☀️ Afternoon

Sphinx Observatory and the Aletsch Glacier

Jungfraujoch summit

From the summit station, an elevator reaches the Sphinx Observatory, with views over the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps, and an ice palace carved into the glacier itself.

📅 Best time to visit

June–September offers the best weather and full operation of mountain railways and cable cars. Winter (Dec-Mar) transforms the region into a major ski destination, with a very different but equally compelling appeal.

🛂 Visas

Switzerland is in the Schengen Area despite not being an EU member. EU citizens need only a national ID card. UK, US, Canadian, Australian, NZ citizens: visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period across all Schengen countries.

💱 Currency

Swiss Franc (CHF), not Euro. Switzerland is consistently among the most expensive countries to visit in the world — mountain excursions in particular carry premium pricing, so budget significantly more than for most destinations.

🆘 Emergency numbers

police: 117

ambulance: 144

💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook

  • A Swiss Travel Pass is genuinely worth considering given the number of train, cable car, and funicular trips typical of an Interlaken visit.
  • Bring warm clothing for Jungfraujoch regardless of the season at valley level — the summit is consistently cold, often below freezing even in summer.
  • Book the first Jungfraujoch train of the day for the clearest visibility — conditions at the summit can deteriorate later in the day.
  • Paragliding flights are weather-dependent and frequently rescheduled at short notice — keep your itinerary flexible around this activity.
  • Interlaken has no major airport of its own — most visitors arrive by train from Zurich or Bern, both scenic journeys worth budgeting time for.
