Day-by-day plan
Arrival & Harder Kulm
Thursday, July 15
Est. spend
$290
per person
🌅 Morning
Arrive at Interlaken via train from Zurich or Bern
Interlaken Ost/West train station
Interlaken has no major airport — most visitors arrive by train from Zurich (about 2 hours) or Bern (under an hour), both scenic rail journeys in their own right.
A Swiss Travel Pass is genuinely worth it if doing multiple mountain excursions from Interlaken — it covers most trains, buses, and many cable cars.
☀️ Afternoon
Harder Kulm funicular
Harder Kulm, Interlaken
A funicular railway climbing directly from town to a viewpoint with sweeping views over both Lake Thun and Lake Brienz simultaneously, plus the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks in the distance.
This is the only viewpoint where both lakes are visible at once — a genuinely unique perspective that justifies the cost.
🌙 Evening
Dinner with mountain views
Interlaken town centre
Interlaken's restaurants frequently offer direct views of the surrounding peaks — a relaxed first evening after travel.

Jungfraujoch — Top of Europe
Friday, July 16
Est. spend
$380

🌅 Morning
Cogwheel train to Jungfraujoch
Jungfraujoch, Bernese Alps
A spectacular, multi-stage cogwheel railway journey to Jungfraujoch at 3,454 metres, the highest railway station in Europe, nicknamed the 'Top of Europe' — passing through tunnels carved directly into the Eiger's north face.
Book the first available train of the day for the clearest views and to beat the crowds — visibility at the summit can deteriorate as the day progresses.
☀️ Afternoon
Sphinx Observatory and the Aletsch Glacier
Jungfraujoch summit
From the summit station, an elevator reaches the Sphinx Observatory, with views over the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps, and an ice palace carved into the glacier itself.
Bring genuinely warm clothing — even in summer, the summit can be well below freezing with strong winds.
🌙 Evening
Return to Interlaken and a relaxed dinner
Interlaken
Return via the cogwheel railway, arriving back in Interlaken in the evening, tired but having visited one of the most spectacular high-altitude railway destinations in the world.
🍽️ Meals
Hotel breakfast
Swiss · $16
Jungfraujoch summit restaurant
Swiss · $35 · Summit prices are high but it's the highest-altitude dining experience in Europe.

Saturday, July 17
Est. spend
$330
per person
🌅 Morning
Tandem paragliding over the Interlaken valley
Interlaken paragliding launch sites
Interlaken is one of the world's premier paragliding destinations — a tandem flight with an instructor gives an extraordinary aerial view of the valley between the two lakes and the surrounding peaks.
Book in advance and stay flexible on timing — flights are weather-dependent and can be rescheduled at short notice.
☀️ Afternoon
Lake Brienz boat cruise
Lake Brienz, near Interlaken
A relaxed boat cruise on Lake Brienz's strikingly turquoise water, fed by glacial meltwater, with stops at lakeside villages like Iseltwald.
Iseltwald's small wooden jetty, made famous by a popular Korean drama, has become a notable photo stop — expect some company if visiting in peak season.
🌙 Evening
Fondue dinner
Interlaken town centre
A classic Swiss fondue dinner, even in summer — a genuinely warming, communal way to end a day combining adrenaline and relaxation.

Trümmelbach Falls
Trümmelbach Falls, Lauterbrunnen Valley
A series of ten glacier-fed waterfalls inside the mountain, accessible via a tunnel elevator and walkways — genuinely unique, thundering with the meltwater of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau glaciers above.
The falls are loudest and most dramatic in summer when glacial melt is at its peak.
☀️ Afternoon
Final shopping and lunch in Lauterbrunnen
Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland
The dramatic Lauterbrunnen Valley, with 72 waterfalls cascading down sheer cliff faces, is worth a final wander before returning to Interlaken for departure.
🌙 Evening

📅 Best time to visit
June–September offers the best weather and full operation of mountain railways and cable cars. Winter (Dec-Mar) transforms the region into a major ski destination, with a very different but equally compelling appeal.
🛂 Visas
Switzerland is in the Schengen Area despite not being an EU member. EU citizens need only a national ID card. UK, US, Canadian, Australian, NZ citizens: visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period across all Schengen countries.
💱 Currency
Swiss Franc (CHF), not Euro. Switzerland is consistently among the most expensive countries to visit in the world — mountain excursions in particular carry premium pricing, so budget significantly more than for most destinations.
🆘 Emergency numbers
police: 117
ambulance: 144
