Before you go

📅 Best time to visit

June to September and December to February for the driest weather, ideal if continuing on to gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park.

🛂 Visas

Most nationalities can obtain a Rwanda visa on arrival or apply online in advance; many African Union nationals enter visa-free, and the East Africa Tourist Visa covers Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda on one multi-entry visa.

💱 Currency

The Rwandan franc is the local currency; Kigali is increasingly cashless with widespread mobile money and card acceptance, but carry small franc notes for markets and rural stops.

🆘 Emergency numbers

police: 112

ambulance: 912

💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook

  • Plastic bags are banned nationwide — repack any plastic packaging before you arrive to avoid issues at customs.
  • Rwanda observes a community workday (Umuganda) on the last Saturday of each month — most shops close until around midday and driving is restricted during it.
  • Kigali is widely regarded as one of Africa's safest and cleanest capitals — walking during the day is generally comfortable.
  • If you want to actually trek gorillas, book permits through Rwanda Development Board months in advance — they routinely sell out.
  • Tipping 10% in restaurants and a per-day rate for drivers/guides is standard and appreciated.
