Travelling to an English-speaking country?

If English isn't your first language, a few weeks of practice before you arrive builds real confidence — especially for asking directions, ordering in restaurants, and understanding regional accents.

Essential in United States

  • 1.Excuse me, could you help me? — Polite way to approach strangers
  • 2.Could I have the bill/check please? — Restaurant (bill = UK, check = US)
  • 3.Which platform/track for [destination]? — At train stations
  • 4.Sorry, I didn't catch that — asking someone to repeat themselves

🌅 Morning

🚆

Arrive at Harry Reid International Airport (LAS)

Harry Reid International Airport

LAS sits at the south end of the Strip, just minutes from most major hotels — rideshare is the standard, fast option.

💡

Unlike most US airports, LAS is genuinely close to everything — don't overestimate travel time to your hotel.

1h$20

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

Walk the Strip — Bellagio, Paris, Venetian

Las Vegas Strip

A walk past the Strip's most famous architectural recreations — the Bellagio's fountains, Paris Las Vegas's half-scale Eiffel Tower, and the Venetian's indoor canals and gondolas.

💡

The Strip is longer to walk than it looks on a map — wear comfortable shoes and budget more time than you'd think.

3h$10

🌙 Evening

🏛️

Bellagio Fountains at night

3600 S Las Vegas Blvd, Bellagio

The choreographed fountain show set to music runs every 15-30 minutes in the evening, free to watch from the sidewalk along the Strip — one of the best free spectacles in the world.

💡

Stand near the centre of the lake for the best view — it gets crowded but rarely unbearably so given the lake's length.

🌅 Morning

🚆

Drive or tour to Grand Canyon West

Grand Canyon West, Arizona

Grand Canyon West (including the glass Skywalk) is about a 2.5-hour drive from Las Vegas, the closest section of the canyon to the city — a genuinely worthwhile full-day add-on given the proximity.

💡

Book an organised tour rather than self-driving if you don't want to manage the desert highway drive — many include the Skywalk and a Hoover Dam stop.

3h$50

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

Grand Canyon West Rim and Skywalk

Grand Canyon West Rim

A horseshoe-shaped glass bridge extending 70 feet over the canyon edge, 4,000 feet above the canyon floor — not for the faint of heart, and a genuinely unique experience.

💡

Cameras and phones aren't allowed on the Skywalk itself (lockers provided) — official photographers sell photos at the exit.

🌙 Evening

🍜

Return to Las Vegas and relaxed dinner

Las Vegas Strip

Arrive back in Las Vegas in the early evening, tired from the long day — a relaxed dinner away from the busiest part of the Strip is the right call.

🌅 Morning

🍜

Sleep in and a casual brunch

Las Vegas Strip

After the long Grand Canyon day, a slower morning — many Strip hotels have excellent brunch buffets that are calmer and better value than dinner buffets.

💡

Bacchanal Buffet at Caesars Palace and the Wicked Spoon at The Cosmopolitan are consistently rated among the best buffets on the Strip.

2h$35

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

Downtown Las Vegas and the Fremont Street Experience

Fremont Street, Downtown Las Vegas

Older, grittier, and more historic than the Strip — Fremont Street's canopy light show runs nightly, and the area has a genuinely different, more local atmosphere.

💡

SlotZilla, a zipline running the length of Fremont Street, is a fun way to see the canopy light show from above.

2.5h$15

🌙 Evening

🏛️

A Cirque du Soleil or headliner show

Various Strip venues

Las Vegas hosts some of the best live entertainment in the world — a Cirque du Soleil production (O at the Bellagio is the most famous) or a major residency show is worth budgeting for at least once.

💡

Book tickets in advance directly through the show's official site rather than third-party resellers, and check for discount same-day ticket booths on the Strip for last-minute deals.

🌅 Morning

🏛️

High Roller observation wheel

The LINQ Promenade, Las Vegas Strip

One of the world's tallest observation wheels, with a 30-minute rotation giving sweeping views over the Strip and surrounding mountains — a calm final morning activity.

💡

Ride during the day for mountain and desert views, or near sunset for the best photos of the Strip lighting up.

1.5h$30

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

Final lunch and shopping

Las Vegas Strip

The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace or the Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian both make for an air-conditioned final few hours before departure.

2h$25

🌙 Evening

🚆

Transfer to LAS Airport

Harry Reid International Airport

Allow at least 2 hours before an international flight. LAS is genuinely close to the Strip — rideshare typically takes 15-20 minutes.

📅 Best time to visit

March–May and October–November give warm, dry days (24-30°C) without summer's extreme heat, which regularly exceeds 40°C from June through September.

🛂 Visas

US visa requirements depend on nationality — many countries qualify for the Visa Waiver Program (ESTA) for stays under 90 days. Apply for ESTA online at least 72 hours before travel.

💱 Currency

US Dollar (USD). Cards are accepted everywhere, including most casino floors. Gambling tips (for dealers) and 18-20% restaurant tipping are both standard local expectations.

🆘 Emergency numbers

police: 911

ambulance: 911

💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook

  • Walking the full length of the Strip takes far longer than it appears on a map — budget significant time or use the monorail/rideshare between distant hotels.
  • Many of the Strip's best attractions (fountains, volcano, canopy shows) are completely free — budget your spending for shows, buffets, and excursions instead.
  • A Grand Canyon West day trip is one of the best add-ons available from Las Vegas, at about 2.5 hours each way — book an organised tour if you'd rather not drive the desert highway yourself.
  • Buffet quality varies hugely by property — Bacchanal at Caesars Palace and Wicked Spoon at The Cosmopolitan are consistently the most highly rated.
  • Hotel resort fees (often $40-50/night) are usually not included in the advertised room rate — factor this into your budget when booking.
