Day-by-day plan
Arrival & Colonial Mumbai
Friday, January 15
Est. spend
$60
per person
🌅 Morning
Arrive at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM)
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport
Prepaid taxi counters inside the terminal are the safest option for getting into the city; the Metro Line 1 also connects to parts of the city but doesn't yet cover all areas comprehensively.
Use the official prepaid taxi counter inside arrivals — agree the fare there to avoid negotiation hassle outside the terminal.
☀️ Afternoon
Gateway of India and Taj Mahal Palace Hotel
Apollo Bandar, Colaba
Mumbai's most iconic monument, built to commemorate King George V's 1911 visit, standing directly across from the historic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel on the waterfront.
The area gets very crowded with vendors and photographers offering services — politely decline if not interested, no obligation to engage.
🌙 Evening
Marine Drive at sunset
Marine Drive, Mumbai
A 3km curving boulevard along the Arabian Sea, nicknamed the 'Queen's Necklace' for the way streetlights curve along the coast at night — Mumbai's most beloved promenade.
Sit on the sea wall like locals do and watch the sunset — it's a genuine daily ritual for Mumbaikars, not just a tourist activity.
🍽️ Meals
Airport or hotel breakfast
Indian · $8
Colaba Causeway lunch
Indian · $10

Elephanta Island
Saturday, January 16
Est. spend

🌅 Morning
Ferry to Elephanta Island
Gateway of India ferry terminal
A UNESCO World Heritage Site about an hour by ferry from the Gateway of India, home to 6th-7th century rock-cut cave temples dedicated to Shiva, carved directly into basalt rock.
Ferries depart roughly every 30 minutes from 9am — go early to avoid the midday heat on the island, which has limited shade.
☀️ Afternoon
Elephanta Caves exploration
Elephanta Island
The main cave's Trimurti sculpture, a three-faced depiction of Shiva, is one of the masterpieces of Indian rock-cut art — a genuinely awe-inspiring sight after the ferry and a short toy-train ride to the entrance.
Hire a local guide at the entrance for context — the carvings' significance isn't well explained by the on-site signage alone.
🌙 Evening
Return to Mumbai and dinner in Bandra
Bandra, Mumbai
Return by ferry to the mainland, then head to Bandra, Mumbai's most fashionable suburb, home to Bollywood stars and a strong café and restaurant scene.
🍽️ Meals
Ferry terminal breakfast
Indian · $6
Elephanta Island stall lunch
Indian · $8
Bandra dinner
Indian/International · $30
Dharavi & Street Food
Sunday, January 17
Est. spend
$65
per person
🌅 Morning
Dharavi guided walking tour
Dharavi, Mumbai
One of the largest informal settlements in Asia, home to a remarkable, highly organised recycling and small-manufacturing economy generating an estimated $1 billion annually — a guided tour run by a Dharavi-based social enterprise gives genuine insight rather than poverty tourism.
Book through Reality Tours and Travel, a social enterprise that reinvests proceeds into the community and has trained local guides from Dharavi itself.
☀️ Afternoon
Dhobi Ghat open-air laundry
Mahalaxmi, Mumbai
A vast open-air laundry where thousands of garments from across Mumbai are washed by hand daily in concrete wash-pens — a genuinely striking, photogenic piece of working infrastructure.
Best viewed from the Mahalaxmi railway bridge overlooking the site — a free, elevated vantage point.
🌙 Evening
Mumbai street food crawl
Chowpatty Beach/Mohammed Ali Road
Mumbai's street food is among the best and most varied in India — vada pav (the city's iconic spiced potato burger), pav bhaji, and bhel puri are essential, found at stalls across the city.
Mohammed Ali Road's night food market is particularly excellent during Ramadan but operates as a vibrant food street year-round.
🍽️ Meals
Hotel breakfast
Indian · $8
Dharavi tour snack
Indian street food · $6
Street food crawl dinner
Indian street food · $12 · Vada pav, pav bhaji, and bhel puri across several stalls rather than one sit-down meal.
Bollywood & Departure
Monday, January 18
Est. spend
$90
per person
🌅 Morning
Bollywood studio tour
Film City, Goregaon
Mumbai (Bombay) is the heart of the Hindi-language film industry, producing more films annually than Hollywood — a studio tour or set visit gives a genuine glimpse into the world's largest film industry by output.
Book through a specialist tour operator rather than trying to arrange studio access independently — most studios require pre-arranged group visits.
☀️ Afternoon
Final shopping at Crawford Market or Colaba Causeway
Crawford Market, Mumbai
A final round of souvenir and spice shopping before departure — Crawford Market's produce and spice stalls or Colaba Causeway's street market both offer a genuine, bustling final experience.
🌙 Evening
Transfer to Mumbai Airport
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport
Allow at least 3 hours before an international flight — Mumbai traffic is notoriously unpredictable and can add significant time even for a short distance.
🍽️ Meals
Hotel breakfast
Indian · $8
Crawford Market area lunch
Indian · $12
Airport food
Indian/International · $15

📅 Best time to visit
November–February offers the most comfortable temperatures (20-32°C) and low humidity. March–May is very hot; June–September is monsoon season with heavy, frequent rain and occasional flooding.
🛂 Visas
Most nationalities require an e-Visa for India, obtainable online in advance — apply at least a week before travel. Some nationalities are eligible for visa-on-arrival at major airports; check current requirements for your passport.
💱 Currency
Indian Rupee (INR). Cash is still widely used, especially for street food and small vendors, though UPI-based digital payment (and cards at hotels/malls) is increasingly common. Carry smaller denominations for everyday purchases.
🆘 Emergency numbers
police: 100
ambulance: 102
💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook
- Mumbai traffic is notoriously unpredictable — always build significant buffer time into airport transfers and cross-city plans.
- Visit Dharavi only through an established, reputable tour operator that reinvests in the community — this avoids exploitative 'poverty tourism' and gives genuine economic benefit locally.
- Mumbai's local trains are an experience in themselves but can be overwhelming for first-time visitors during rush hour — taxis or rideshare apps are more comfortable for most tourists.
- Street food is generally safe at stalls with a high turnover of local customers — avoid pre-cut fruit or anything that's been sitting out.
- Dress modestly when visiting religious sites and more conservative neighbourhoods — covered shoulders and knees are appreciated.
