Language preparation

15 min/day for 8 weeks ≈ 672 useful words and phrases

Travelling to an English-speaking country?

If English isn't your first language, a few weeks of practice before you arrive builds real confidence — especially for asking directions, ordering in restaurants, and understanding regional accents.

Essential in United States

  • 1.Excuse me, could you help me? — Polite way to approach strangers
  • 2.Could I have the bill/check please? — Restaurant (bill = UK, check = US)
  • 3.Which platform/track for [destination]? — At train stations
  • 4.Sorry, I didn't catch that — asking someone to repeat themselves

🌅 Morning

🚆

Arrive at JFK or Newark (EWR)

JFK International Airport, Queens, NY

From JFK take the AirTrain to Jamaica then E/J/Z subway to Manhattan ($10.75). From Newark, take NJ Transit to Penn Station ($17.50). Both around 60 minutes. Rideshare surge-pricing will be extreme during the World Cup — transit is the only reliable option.

💡

Buy a 7-day unlimited MetroCard ($34) immediately at the airport — covers all subway rides through your stay.

🏨

Check in and recover

Midtown Manhattan, New York

Midtown hotels around Times Square or Penn Station put you closest to the fan energy and NJ Transit access to MetLife Stadium. The stadium is a 25-minute train ride from Penn Station on the NJ Transit Meadowlands line — critical for match days.

💡

World Cup hotel rates in NYC are at their peak during this week. Book with free cancellation months in advance — rates double in the final fortnight.

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

Bryant Park and Midtown walk

Bryant Park, 42nd Street between 5th and 6th Avenues

Bryant Park hosts a public fanzone during the World Cup with big-screen match broadcasts. The area buzzes with international supporters — flags, chants, and impromptu street celebrations after goals. Walk to the New York Public Library steps for a classic Midtown view.

💡

Bring cash — street food vendors around the fanzone are cash-preferred and lines move faster.

2hFree
🍜

Chelsea Market lunch

75 Ninth Avenue, Chelsea

The former Nabisco factory turned food hall spans an entire city block under the High Line. Tacos, fresh lobster rolls, artisan dumplings, craft beer — one of the best food halls in the USA without the tourist-trap pricing.

💡

Los Tacos No. 1 has the best tacos in the building — the line moves fast.

🌙 Evening

🏛️

Times Square semi-final watch (if your team is playing)

Times Square, Midtown Manhattan

Times Square restaurants and bars broadcast every World Cup match. The atmosphere during a semi-final night — with supporters from two nations packed into the same bars — is extraordinary. Bars along 8th Avenue near Penn Station draw the biggest mixed crowds.

💡

Book a bar table reservation in advance for semi-final night — walk-ins will be turned away by kick-off time.

🌅 Morning

🏛️

Brooklyn Bridge morning walk

Brooklyn Bridge, Lower Manhattan

Walk the 1.8km pedestrian path from the Manhattan side to Brooklyn and back. The skyline view from the middle of the bridge at 8–9am — before the tourist rush — is one of the best in the city. Cross into DUMBO on the Brooklyn side for coffee.

💡

Take the A/C train to Fulton Street (Manhattan side) and walk to Brooklyn. Return by subway from High Street station in DUMBO.

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

High Line and the Vessel

High Line, enter at Gansevoort St & Washington St, Manhattan

The High Line is an elevated 2.3km park built on a former railway freight line. Walk its length from Gansevoort Street (Meatpacking) to 34th Street — past public art installations, gardens, and food stands. The Vessel sculpture at Hudson Yards is at the northern end.

💡

The stretch between 23rd and 30th Street has the best views west over the Hudson River.

2hFree
🏛️

Empire State Building observation deck

350 Fifth Avenue, Midtown Manhattan

102 floors, 443 metres, and a 360° view of the entire New York metro area including New Jersey — you can see MetLife Stadium from the deck on a clear day. Tickets purchased in advance save 30–45 minutes of queue time.

💡

Buy a timed entry ticket online. The 86th-floor open-air deck is the most photographed — the 102nd floor is smaller, more expensive, and enclosed.

🌙 Evening

🏛️

Second semi-final watch party

Hell's Kitchen, 9th Avenue, Manhattan

The two semi-finalists are set — tonight's match determines the opposition in the Final. Find a bar near your hotel that's packed with the rival fans and soak in the pre-Final tension. Hell's Kitchen (9th Ave, 46th–55th Street) has the most concentrated sports bar strip.

💡

Many Hell's Kitchen bars have outdoor seating — get there 90 minutes before kick-off to claim a spot.

🍜

Smorgasburg food market

Smorgasburg, Williamsburg, Brooklyn (weekends)

New York's famous open-air food market runs weekends in Prospect Park (Brooklyn) and Williamsburg. Over 100 vendors sell everything from Taiwanese pork buns to Italian porchetta sandwiches to Japanese soft cream. The atmosphere on a World Cup summer weekend is festive.

💡

Bring cash and arrive at opening (11am) before the longest queues build up.

2h$30

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

MoMA (Museum of Modern Art)

11 West 53rd Street, Midtown Manhattan

Home to Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans, and van Gogh's Starry Night. One of the world's great modern art collections across six floors. Allow 2–3 hours minimum to see the highlights without rushing.

💡

The audio guide is free on the MoMA app — download it before you go. Crowds thin out considerably after 3pm.

3h$30

🌙 Evening

🍜

Dinner in the West Village

West Village, Manhattan (Christopher St / Bleecker St area)

The West Village has the best restaurant density in Manhattan — cobblestone streets, brownstone town houses, and restaurants that don't announce themselves. Carbone (Italian-American), Via Carota, and Corner Bistro (best burger) are neighbourhood landmarks worth a reservation.

💡

Carbone and Via Carota require reservations weeks in advance. Corner Bistro is walk-in cash only — always worth the queue.

🏛️

Staten Island Ferry — Statue of Liberty view

Whitehall Terminal, 4 South Street, Lower Manhattan

The free Staten Island Ferry runs every 30 minutes, 24 hours, from Whitehall Terminal in Lower Manhattan. It passes within 400 metres of the Statue of Liberty and gives an unobstructed view of the New York harbour skyline from the upper deck. Best kept free activity in the city.

💡

Stand on the right side (facing Brooklyn) when leaving Manhattan for the closest Statue of Liberty view. Take the return ferry back — it has equally good views.

1.5hFree
🏛️

9/11 Memorial

9/11 Memorial, 180 Greenwich Street, Lower Manhattan

The two reflecting pools in the footprints of the Twin Towers are open-air and free. The surrounding oak grove is planted with survivor trees. The museum is separate and requires tickets — emotionally demanding, plan it only if you have an otherwise quiet afternoon.

💡

The memorial is quieter on weekday mornings. The names inscribed on the pools are organized by relationship and company — staff are available to help you find specific names.

☀️ Afternoon

🚆

MetLife Stadium reconnaissance trip

MetLife Stadium, 1 MetLife Stadium Drive, East Rutherford, NJ

Take the NJ Transit train from Penn Station (Gate A, NJ Transit concourse) to Meadowlands Station — it runs directly to the stadium, 25 minutes. Walk the perimeter, check the fan entry gates, locate your section entrance. Much less stressful to scout it the day before.

💡

NJ Transit runs special Meadowlands service on match days but ordinary midday trains also stop there. Pre-scout which Penn Station entrance/platform runs to Meadowlands — it's not the main NJ Transit platform area.

2h$10

🌙 Evening

🏛️

Pre-Final dinner — supporters' gathering

Midtown / Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan

The night before the World Cup Final transforms Midtown and Hell's Kitchen into a street carnival. Supporters in both nations' colours fill every pub and restaurant. Join a bar that's reserved specifically for one set of fans for the best atmosphere — or find a neutral spot for a mixed crowd.

💡

National-flag themed bars announce their allegiance outside. For a neutral atmosphere, the outdoor plazas around Rockefeller Center have large screens during the tournament.

🍜

Match-day morning — light breakfast, gear up

Your hotel, Midtown Manhattan

Keep the morning light — the Final kicks off in the late afternoon or evening local time. Eat a proper breakfast at your hotel; avoid heavy food before the match. Wear your team colours, pack essentials (ID, ticket, water, cash for inside the stadium) and get to Penn Station with time to spare.

💡

Check the NJ Transit match-day schedule posted at Penn Station entrances — special Meadowlands Express services run from 4+ hours before kick-off.

2h$20
🚆

Penn Station to MetLife Stadium (NJ Transit)

Penn Station, 2 Pennsylvania Plaza, New York

Take NJ Transit Meadowlands Express from Penn Station directly to Meadowlands Station, which deposits you at the stadium gates. The journey is 25–30 minutes. Trains run every 20 minutes on match days. Plan to arrive at least 2 hours before kick-off — security queues for a World Cup Final are substantial.

💡

Do NOT drive to MetLife Stadium on Final day. Roads will be closed in a radius around the stadium. The train is the only practical option and is well-managed by NJ Transit on match days.

1h$13

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

Pre-match fanzone at MetLife Stadium

MetLife Stadium, 1 MetLife Stadium Drive, East Rutherford, NJ

MetLife Stadium opens its external fanzones 3–4 hours before kick-off. Live entertainment, food trucks, official merchandise, national team flags, and the electric build-up as the crowd fills. The atmosphere approaching a World Cup Final is unlike anything in sport.

💡

Stadium food is expensive — eat a proper meal beforehand. Official merchandise sells out of size XL quickly; buy a programme if you want a keepsake.

2.5h$50
🏛️

FIFA World Cup 2026 Final

MetLife Stadium, 1 MetLife Stadium Drive, East Rutherford, NJ

The biggest match in world football. MetLife Stadium holds 82,500 — the largest crowd ever assembled for a World Cup Final. From the opening ceremony through to the trophy lift, this is a once-in-a-generation sporting event. Take a moment during the anthems to look up and take it in.

💡

Tickets will have been purchased months in advance through FIFA or official resellers. Secondary market prices for the Final exceed $5,000 per seat — keep your tickets secure and do not photograph QR codes.

3.5hFree

🌙 Evening

🏛️

Post-match celebration — Times Square or hotel

Times Square, Midtown Manhattan

After the Final whistle, the entire city erupts. Times Square becomes the focal point — supporters of both teams pour in, flags wave, horns sound. The return train from MetLife takes around 40 minutes post-match but expect queues. Times Square will still be celebrating long after midnight.

💡

Post-match NJ Transit trains back to Penn Station queue can be long — wait 45–60 minutes after the final whistle for the crush to ease, then board. The stadium has food and beverages after the match.
