Day-by-day plan
Copenhagen or Bergen Embarkation
Tuesday, June 15
Est. spend
$120
per person
🌅 Morning
Arrive Copenhagen or Bergen — embarkation
Port of Bergen, Norway
Norwegian fjords cruises typically depart from Copenhagen (Denmark), Hamburg (Germany), or Bergen (Norway). Bergen embarkations are the shortest transfer. The city of Bergen (UNESCO-listed Bryggen wharf, cable car to Fløyen, fish market) is worth an extra day before embarkation.
Bergen's fish market (Fisketorget) at the wharf sells the freshest Norwegian salmon, shrimp, and whale meat (controversial) for lunch before boarding. The Norwegian salmon is extraordinary.
☀️ Afternoon
Bergen Bryggen Wharf walk
Bryggen, Bergen, Norway
The 14th-century Hanseatic League wharf — the row of colourful wooden warehouses on the Bergen waterfront is one of Norway's most photographed sights. The Bryggens Museum excavation (entry 100 NOK/$10) shows the medieval layer beneath the current buildings.
The Fløibanen funicular (round trip 120 NOK/$11) goes to the top of Fløyen mountain (320m) — the Bergen city view from the top is extraordinary and the forest hiking trails at the summit are free.
🍽️ Meals
Fisketorget, Bergen fish market
Norwegian seafood · $30 · Fresh grilled salmon, shrimp cocktail, and fish soup at the market stalls. The fish soup (fiskesuppe) with Bergen bread is the local classic.
Flåm and Aurlandsfjord
Wednesday, June 16
Est. spend
$185
per person
🌅 Morning
Flåm Railway — world's steepest scenic railway
Flåm Railway Station, Flåm, Norway
The 20km Flåmsbana railway from Flåm to Myrdal (867m elevation) is the world's steepest normal-gauge railway — 80% of the journey is at maximum gradient (5.5%). The waterfalls, snow-covered peaks, and tiny mountain farms visible from the train make this one of Europe's great rail journeys. Return trip: 450 NOK ($42).
Book the Flåm Railway online at visitflam.com — it sells out in peak season. The train stops at Kjosfossen waterfall (where a mythology figure dances in the mist) for photographs.
☀️ Afternoon
Aurlandsfjord kayaking or walk
Flåm, Aurland Municipality, Norway
The Aurlandsfjord (a branch of Sognefjord, Norway's longest fjord) seen from a sea kayak gives the most intimate fjord experience — the granite walls towering above you, the silence, and the occasional seal.
Flåm Kayak Outfitter rents single kayaks for 250 NOK/hour ($24) — guided tours also available. The fjord walls make even calm conditions feel dramatic.
🍽️ Meals
Ægir Brewery, Flåm
Norwegian/Craft beer · $45 · Fjord-side craft brewery in a Viking longhouse-style building. The Norway Pale Ale and the lamb rack are both excellent. Book ahead.
Geirangerfjord
Thursday, June 17

🌅 Morning
Geirangerfjord — UNESCO and the Seven Sisters waterfall
Geirangerfjord, Stranda Municipality, Norway
The most photographed fjord in the world — 15km of near-vertical granite walls, hanging farms accessible only by rope, and the Seven Sisters waterfall (7 streams dropping simultaneously from the clifftop). The ship navigates through the fjord at slow speed for maximum impact.
Stand on the ship's bow deck during the fjord entrance — the 1,000m walls rising from the water on both sides as the ship navigates a fjord barely wider than the ship itself is one of travel's genuinely overwhelming moments.
☀️ Afternoon
Geiranger village — kayaking and waterfall hike
Geiranger, Stranda Municipality, Norway
The tiny village of Geiranger (250 permanent residents, 800,000 cruise visitors per year) at the fjord head has kayak rentals, a hiking trail to the Seven Sisters waterfall viewpoint (2.5 hours return), and the Norwegian Fjord Centre (free).
The Eagle Road (Ørnesvingen) viewpoint above Geiranger — accessible by taxi or rental bike — gives the aerial view of the S-bend entrance to the fjord that features in every Norwegian tourist poster.
🍽️ Meals
Geiranger bakery
Norwegian · $15 · Norwegian waffles with sour cream and jam at the village café. Extremely simple, surprisingly good.
Ålesund Art Nouveau
Friday, June 18
Est. spend
$115
per person
🌅 Morning
Ålesund — Art Nouveau city
Ålesund, Møre og Romsdal, Norway
Ålesund was completely rebuilt after a fire in 1904 in Art Nouveau style simultaneously — every building in the centre was designed in the same style in the same decade. The result is the most architecturally consistent town in Norway. The Aksla hilltop (418 steps) gives the classic view of the island town.
The JUGENDSTILSENTERET (Art Nouveau Centre, 100 NOK/$10) in the main street explains the fire and rebuilding story. The building itself is a textbook example of the style.
☀️ Afternoon
Giske and Atlantic Ocean Park
Tueneset, Ålesund, Norway
The Atlantic Ocean Park (Atlanterhavsparken) is Norway's largest aquarium — tanks of the fjord's actual residents (wolf fish, halibut, Norwegian lobster) and the most comprehensive display of Norwegian marine life.
🍽️ Meals
XL Diner, Ålesund
Norwegian · $35 · Popular Ålesund restaurant. The bacalao (Norwegian dried cod stew, different from Portuguese version) is the local classic.
Hardangerfjord
Saturday, June 19
Est. spend
$80
per person
🌅 Morning
Hardangerfjord — fruit blossom route
Hardangerfjord, Hordaland, Norway
The Hardangerfjord (Norway's second longest) is known for its apple and cherry orchards — the blossom in May, the fruit in August, the cider in September. The Sørfjord arm has the famous Trolltunga rock formation (Troll's Tongue) 10km hiking from Odda.
Trolltunga is a 28km round-trip hike (10–12 hours) from Odda — not compatible with a cruise day visit unless you're off the ship early. The Vøringsfossen waterfall (Norway's most visited, free) is accessible from the Eidfjord pier stop.
🍽️ Meals
Hardanger Cidery, Ullensvang
Norwegian · $25 · Local Hardanger cider and apple products. The Hardanger cider is one of Norway's best-kept culinary secrets.
Stavanger and Lysefjord
Sunday, June 20
Est. spend
$175
per person
🌅 Morning
Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) hike
Preikestolen, Forsand Municipality, Norway
The 604m flat-topped cliff above the Lysefjord — 4km hike each way, 2 hours up, 1.5 hours down. The view from the 25×25m platform above the vertical drop to the fjord below is one of Norway's great sights. Book a transfer from the Stavanger pier to the Preikestolen trailhead.
The hike is moderately demanding — rocky trail with some scrambling. Trekking poles recommended. The ferry from Stavanger across the Lysefjord and back (Rodne Fjord Cruise, 3 hours, 600 NOK/$57) gives the Pulpit Rock view from below without the hike.
☀️ Afternoon
Stavanger Old Town (Gamle Stavanger)
Gamle Stavanger, Stavanger, Norway
The 173 white wooden houses of Old Stavanger (1700s) are the best-preserved wooden town quarter in Northern Europe. The Norwegian Petroleum Museum (the oil story) and the Norwegian Canning Museum (sardine history) give interesting industrial context.
🍽️ Meals
Fisketorget, Stavanger
Norwegian seafood · $35 · The Stavanger fish market at the waterfront. Norwegian king crab (if in season) or fresh shrimp in their shells.
Return to Bergen — Disembark
Monday, June 21
Est. spend
$100
per person
🌅 Morning
Final fjord sailing and Bergen arrival
Port of Bergen, Norway
The return sailing to Bergen in the morning — the Hardangerfjord approach to Bergen, the Askøy bridges, and the Norwegian coast on both sides. Disembark at Bergen's Skoltegrunnskaien cruise terminal.
Stand on the stern deck as the ship approaches Bergen — the Bryggen wharves visible from the water are the final memorable image of the fjords.
☀️ Afternoon
Bergen final walk and airport transfer
Bergen, Norway
Disembarkation usually completes by 10am. The Fløibanen funicular (10 minutes from the wharf) gives the farewell Bergen view before the airport transfer.
🍽️ Meals
Pingvinen, Bergen
Norwegian · $30 · Traditional Norwegian comfort food — fårikål (lamb and cabbage), kjøttkaker (meatballs in gravy), and cloudberries. The most traditional Norwegian restaurant in Bergen.
Before you go
📅 Best time to visit
June–August for the midnight sun and warmest temperatures (18–22°C in the fjords). May has cherry blossom in the Hardangerfjord. September–October has dramatic autumn colours but shorter daylight. Winter cruises (Northern Lights season, November–February) are a completely different experience.
🛂 Visas
Norway is a Schengen country. Visa-free for US (90 days), UK (6 months with ETIAS from 2025), EU, Australian, Canadian citizens.
💱 Currency
Norwegian Krone (NOK). 10.5 NOK per USD. Norway is Europe's most expensive country — a beer costs 100–120 NOK ($10), a restaurant lunch 200–350 NOK ($19–33). Cruise ship excursions are expensive; independent activity at each port is cheaper.
🆘 Emergency numbers
police: 112
ambulance: 113
coast guard: +47 51 89 60 00
💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook
- Bring layers regardless of forecast — Norwegian fjord weather changes rapidly. A waterproof shell jacket and base layer are essential even in summer.
- The midnight sun (June–July above the Arctic Circle) is disorienting — blackout curtains in the cabin are essential. The light at midnight is extraordinary for photography.
