🌅 Morning
Arrive at Kansai International Airport (KIX)
Kansai International Airport
The Nankai Limited Express 'Rapi:t' or JR Haruka train connects the airport to central Osaka in about 35-45 minutes.
Consider buying an ICOCA card on arrival for seamless tap-and-go travel across Osaka's trains, subways, and buses.
☀️ Afternoon
Osaka Castle
Osaka Castle, Osaka
A reconstructed 16th-century castle at the heart of a large park, with a museum inside chronicling the castle's role in Japan's unification under Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
The top floor observation deck offers sweeping views over the city — a worthwhile stop even for those not deeply interested in the museum exhibits.
🌙 Evening
Dotonbori street food district
Dotonbori, Osaka
Osaka's most famous food and entertainment district, lit by enormous illuminated signs including the iconic Glico running man, and packed with stalls serving the city's signature street food.

🌅 Morning
Train to Nara
Nara, Japan
About 45 minutes from Osaka, Nara was Japan's first permanent capital and is famous for its free-roaming deer, considered sacred messengers of the gods.
Buy 'shika senbei' (deer crackers) from vendors to feed the deer — many will bow to request a cracker, a charming, much-photographed local tradition.
☀️ Afternoon
Todai-ji Temple and Nara Park
Todai-ji Temple, Nara
Home to the Great Buddha Hall, one of the world's largest wooden buildings, housing a colossal 15-metre bronze Buddha statue, set within the sprawling deer-filled grounds of Nara Park.
Look for the small hole in one of the Great Buddha Hall's support pillars — local tradition holds that those who can crawl through it are guaranteed enlightenment.

Kyoto, Japan
About 30-40 minutes from Osaka, Kyoto was Japan's imperial capital for over a thousand years and remains its cultural and spiritual heart, with thousands of temples and shrines.
Kyoto is easily reachable for a day trip, but consider this a sampler — the city genuinely warrants its own multi-day visit if time allows on a future trip.
☀️ Afternoon
Fushimi Inari Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera
Fushimi Inari Shrine, Kyoto
Fushimi Inari's thousands of vermillion torii gates climbing the mountainside form one of Japan's most photographed sights, paired with Kiyomizu-dera, a wooden temple built without a single nail, offering sweeping city views.
Walk at least partway up the torii gate tunnel beyond the first photo spot — the crowds thin considerably after the first few hundred metres.
🌙 Evening
Gion district evening walk
Gion, Kyoto
Kyoto's famous geisha district, with traditional wooden machiya townhouses lining narrow lanes — visitors occasionally spot a geiko or maiko hurrying to an evening appointment.
Be respectful and avoid blocking paths or photographing geiko/maiko without permission — Kyoto has introduced fines in some areas for harassment of performers.

Many stalls grill seafood and skewers to order right in front of you — a genuinely fun, casual way to sample Osaka's famous ingredients.

- Osaka is widely considered Japan's street food capital — takoyaki and okonomiyaki both originated here and are must-tries in Dotonbori.
- Both Kyoto and Nara are easy day trips from Osaka by train, making Osaka a practical, often more affordable base for exploring the wider Kansai region.
- Fushimi Inari's torii gate tunnel gets dramatically less crowded if you walk even a short distance beyond the main entrance photo spot.
- Respect photography etiquette in Gion — avoid photographing geiko or maiko without permission, as the district has introduced fines for harassment in some areas.
