Torres del Paine W Trek — 8 Days in Patagonia

Eight days walking the W Trek through one of the world's most dramatic landscapes — granite spires rising 2,800m from the Patagonian steppe, hanging glaciers, turquoise iceberg lakes, and condors overhead. The W shape describes the three main arms of the route: the Torres base (east), Valle del Francés (centre), and Grey Glacier (west). Stay in a combination of mountain lodges and EcoCamp geodesic domes. No technical climbing required — but expect Patagonian wind that can exceed 100km/h.

🚆

Fly Punta Arenas → bus or fly to Puerto Natales

Puerto Natales, Magallanes Region, Chile

Punta Arenas Airport (PUQ) is the main entry point — reached via Santiago (3 hours) or Buenos Aires. From Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales is 3 hours by bus (frequent departures via Bus-Sur or Turbus, $12) or 45 minutes by flight. Puerto Natales is the staging town for the Torres del Paine park — gear, maps, and final supplies here.

💡

Book the Puerto Natales bus from Punta Arenas in advance — they fill up in peak season (November–February). Alternatively, fly directly into Puerto Natales from Santiago via LATAM.

4h$45
🎯

Gear check and last shopping in Puerto Natales

Erratic Rock, Baquedano 719, Puerto Natales

Puerto Natales has several outdoor gear shops (Patagon Sport, Erratic Rock) for forgotten items — gaiters, waterproofs, trekking poles, snacks. The Erratic Rock hostel runs a free daily gear-check briefing at 15:00 — experienced guides answer questions about the route, mountain conditions, and packing.

💡

Erratic Rock's free 15:00 briefing is invaluable — attend it on arrival day regardless of your experience level. They update trail conditions daily.

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

Puerto Natales waterfront and Milodon Cave tour

Monumento Natural Cueva del Milodon, Puerto Natales

The Last Hope Sound (Última Esperanza) stretches in front of Puerto Natales — stunning views across the fiord to the mountains. Milodon Cave (30 min from town) is where a 3,000-year-old ground sloth skeleton was discovered in 1895. The cave dimensions are cathedral-like and the setting is dramatic.

🍜

Pre-trek dinner and rest

Afrigonia Restaurant, Eberhard 343, Puerto Natales

Afrigonia restaurant in Puerto Natales is one of Patagonia's finest — fusion of African and Patagonian cuisine, featuring lamb (cordero) and king crab (centolla). Eat a proper dinner before an early start tomorrow.

💡

Chilean Patagonian lamb (cordero al palo — spit-roasted) is one of South America's great food experiences. Order it here in Puerto Natales rather than on the trail where food is limited.

🚆

Bus to Torres del Paine Laguna Amarga entrance

Laguna Amarga, Torres del Paine National Park

Bus Gomez departs Puerto Natales 07:30 and arrives at Laguna Amarga (the east park entrance) at 10:30. Pay the park entrance fee here (USD 21 high season). Transfer to Hotel Las Torres by catamaran across the lake (included in some packages) or 10km walk.

💡

The park entrance fee has increased annually — budget $25. Chilean pesos and USD both accepted.

3.5h$21
🎯

Begin Torres base hike (18km round trip)

Sendero Base Torres, Torres del Paine

The Torres del Paine hike — the most famous trail in South America — starts from Refugio Las Torres. A 10km climb through lenga beech forest and boulder fields, gaining 700m in elevation, reaching the Laguna Torres at the base of the three granite towers. Allow 4–5 hours each way. Start early to be at the top for sunrise the following morning (if camping there).

💡

The final 45 minutes is a steep boulder scramble — use hands as well as feet. The lake at the base changes colour with cloud and sun: brilliant turquoise when sun hits the glacial flour in suspension.

5h ascentFree

☀️ Afternoon

🎯

Laguna Torres — the Three Towers

Laguna Torres, base of the towers

The Torres (South 2,850m, Central 2,800m, North 2,260m) are vertical granite shafts that appear to have been pulled from the earth. At the base, the glacial lake colour shifts from grey to brilliant turquoise when the sun appears. Sit here for as long as possible — this is the reason the park exists.

💡

Wind can be extreme at the base — sit behind a large boulder for shelter. The towers are obscured by cloud roughly 50% of the time; if they're visible when you arrive, stay until clouds threaten.

🎯

Descent and dinner at Refugio Las Torres

Refugio Las Torres, Torres del Paine

Descend in 3 hours back to Refugio Las Torres — dinner is included in refugio accommodation. Mountain food: soup, pasta, salad, and hot chocolate. The refugios in Torres del Paine are clean and comfortable with bunk dormitories or private rooms.

🌅 Morning

🎯

Pre-dawn ascent for tower sunrise

Laguna Torres, base of the towers

Wake at 04:30 and hike the 3 hours back to Laguna Torres to arrive before sunrise at 06:30–07:00. When the sun hits the east-facing Torres, the granite lights from deep red to bright orange to gold in a 15-minute sequence. This 'enrosadira' (alpenglow effect) is the defining image of Torres del Paine. One of the most spectacular natural light shows on Earth.

💡

Use a headtorch for the boulder scramble section — the rocks are easier to navigate in the dark than they look. Bring gloves; pre-dawn at 2,000m is near-freezing even in November.

3hFree
🎯

Sunrise at Laguna Torres

Laguna Torres

If conditions are right, the experience of watching the Torres turn from dark shadow to brilliant illuminated orange in the morning silence — with condors often circling overhead — is genuinely life-changing. Allow at least 1 hour here regardless of the light.

💡

The cloud cover on the towers is entirely unpredictable — some people wait 3 days and never see them clear. Most people see them at least partially. The pre-dawn ascent in the dark gives you the best odds.

☀️ Afternoon

🎯

Descent and transfer to Cuernos refugio

Refugio Los Cuernos, Torres del Paine

After the sunrise, descend to Las Torres and continue the W Trek westward to Refugio Los Cuernos (7km, 2 hours). The Cuernos del Paine (horns) are dramatic sedimentary and granite peaks visible for the entire walk. The path follows Lake Nordenskjöld.

2hFree
🌊

Rest at Cuernos with Cuernos views

Refugio Los Cuernos, Lake Nordenskjöld shore

The Cuernos del Paine towers directly above the refugio are among the most photogenic mountains in the world — their banded sedimentary rock layered above grey granite makes them visually extraordinary. A 2-hour rest afternoon after an early start is earned.

🎯

Trek to Valle del Francés camp (12km)

Campamento Italiano, Valle del Francés

From Cuernos refugio, walk west to the Francés Valley camp (3 hours along Lake Nordenskjöld). The valley is the most dramatic in the park — a deep glacial cleft surrounded by hanging glaciers that calve loudly throughout the day, with the Paine Grande massif (3,050m) towering overhead.

💡

Leave bags at Campamento Italiano (the junction camp) for the valley ascent — you'll return the same way. The valley trail is an out-and-back from the camp.

3hFree
🎯

Valle del Francés ascent — glacier viewpoint

Mirador Valle del Francés

The valley walk (4km each way) follows the Francés River upwards past hanging glaciers. At the mirador, several glaciers are visible simultaneously: Glacier del Francés with ice towers, Ventisquero del Francés calving loudly into the valley below. Andean condors (wingspan 3.3m) circle the thermal columns above.

💡

The sound of glacial calving — a deep crack followed by crashing ice — echoes continuously in the valley in warm weather. When you hear it, stop and look up immediately.

☀️ Afternoon

🎯

Continue to Refugio Paine Grande

Refugio Paine Grande, Lago Pehoé

After returning from the Valle del Francés mirador, continue west to Refugio Paine Grande (6km, 2 hours) — the central hub of the W Trek and largest refugio in the park. This is where the ferry crosses to reach the Grey Glacier arm tomorrow.

2hFree
🌊

Paine Grande terrace and Lago Pehoé sunset

Lago Pehoé shoreline

Refugio Paine Grande sits on the shore of Lago Pehoé — the most photographed lake in the park. The Cuernos del Paine are reflected in the lake at sunset. The combination of wind-blown surface patterns, the towers, and the evening light is extraordinary.

Paine Grande refugio dinner

Refugio Paine Grande restaurant

Paine Grande has the park's best mountain restaurant — a proper menu including steak, pasta, and local trout. After three days of simple food, this dinner feels exceptional. Order the Chilean red wine (in packs, surprisingly good).

💡

The wine (CHilean carménère) is sold in tetrapaks at the refugio bar — perfect for weight-conscious trekkers.

🎯

Trek to Grey Glacier viewpoint (11km)

Mirador Glacier Grey, Torres del Paine

The western arm of the W Trek follows the eastern shore of Lago Grey to the Grey Glacier face — a 4km-wide, 30m-tall wall of blue ice calving into the lake. The walk passes hanging suspension bridges and passes enormous blue icebergs floating in the lake turquoise water. 4 hours from Paine Grande.

💡

The colour of the ice at Grey Glacier is extraordinary — ancient compressed ice absorbs red wavelengths and reflects blue, making it appear an intense cyan. The older and more compressed the ice, the more vivid the blue.

4hFree
🎯

Grey Glacier face viewpoint

Mirador Glacier Grey

From the mirador platform, the glacier face fills the entire field of view — 4km wide and calving continuously. Icebergs in various stages of melt float in Lago Grey. The sound of the calving — a deep crack followed by a thunderous splash — echoes across the lake. On clear days, the ice field (Campo de Hielo Patagónico Sur, the world's third-largest ice mass) is visible extending inland.

💡

Grey glacier kayaking tours launch from the refugio Grey (at the glacier base) — a half-day kayak through icebergs is one of Patagonia's best experiences ($120, book via refugio Grey). Requires booking 2 days in advance.

☀️ Afternoon

🚆

Return to Paine Grande by ferry

Lago Grey, Torres del Paine

The Grey ferry (Grey Navegación) runs from the Refugio Grey jetty to Paine Grande twice daily — 1-hour boat ride through the iceberg-studded Lago Grey. Significantly faster than walking and gives a different perspective of the glacier from the water. Cost: $28.

💡

Book the return ferry the evening before — it fills up with trekkers doing the Grey arm. Miss it and you walk 4 hours back.

1h boat$28
🏨

EcoCamp transfer and check-in (upgrade option)

EcoCamp Patagonia, Torres del Paine

EcoCamp Patagonia (adjacent to Hotel Las Torres) offers geodesic dome accommodation with en-suite and views of the Torres. If budget allows, spending the final night in a dome is extraordinary — the transparent roof section shows the Milky Way and the Torres silhouette at night.

💡

EcoCamp domes cost $280–450/night but include all meals, guided activities, and transfers. Worth the splurge for the final night.

🎯

Guided puma tracking walk

Pampas south of Hotel Las Torres

Torres del Paine has the highest density of pumas of any park in South America. EcoCamp and other operators offer guided puma tracking walks at dawn — the best time for sightings. Guides know the territories of specific named pumas. Sighting rate in November: approximately 70%.

💡

Wear neutral colours (no bright blue or red). Move slowly, stay behind the guide, and be prepared to stand completely still for 10 minutes at a time. Pumas are most active at dawn and dusk.

3h$85
🎯

Guanaco viewpoint at Laguna Amarga

Laguna Amarga, Torres del Paine east sector

The Patagonian steppe east of the park entrance has large guanaco herds — South America's wild camelid. Herds of 50–100 guanacos are common near Laguna Amarga. Darwin observed guanacos here in 1834 and noted their astonishing jumping ability (1.8m vertical). Andean foxes are frequently seen in the same area.

1.5hFree

☀️ Afternoon

🎯

Lago Sarmiento and border flamingos

Lago Sarmiento, Torres del Paine

Lago Sarmiento (south of the park near the entrance) has a resident colony of Chilean flamingos — 500–800 birds that feed on algae in the highly alkaline lake. The combination of pink flamingos, turquoise lake, and Torres del Paine peaks in the background is surreal.

2hFree
🌊

Rest, shower, and clean gear

Refugio or EcoCamp

A rest afternoon after 5 days of trekking. Wash clothes in the refugio sinks (dry quickly in Patagonian wind), repack, and recover. The wind alone can be exhausting — Patagonian wind is constant at 40–60km/h with gusts to 100+, requiring significant energy to walk against.

🌙 Evening

🍜

Patagonian asado at EcoCamp

EcoCamp Patagonia outdoor firepit

Chilean asado (wood-fired barbecue) with cordero al palo (whole lamb spit-roasted for 4 hours) is the traditional Patagonian celebration meal. EcoCamp hosts asado nights for departing guests — whole lamb, chimichurri, roasted vegetables, and Carménère wine around an outdoor fire.

💡

The asado is the social high point of the week — all the trek stories come out. Patagonian lamb is extraordinary — the animals graze on wild herbs that give the meat an unmistakable flavour.
