Arrival & Fisherman's Wharf
Wednesday, September 15
Est. spend
$160
per person
🌅 Morning
Arrive SFO or Oakland Airport
San Francisco International Airport
SFO is 20km from downtown. BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) from SFO to Montgomery St (Union Square) takes 30 minutes ($10). Uber costs $35–55. Oakland Airport (OAK) uses BART Oakland Coliseum station (OAK connector bus to BART). Both airports are served by BART — the easiest option.
BART runs 24 hours on Friday and Saturday nights. The Clipper card (contactless) makes BART fares automatic. Alternatively, BART accepts Apple Pay and contactless cards directly.
☀️ Afternoon
Fisherman's Wharf and the cable car
Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco
Fisherman's Wharf is touristy but worth an hour — the working fishing boats, the sea lion colony on Pier 39 (free, they arrived in 1990 and never left), and the Boudin sourdough bakery. The historic cable car system (since 1873) is the world's oldest operating mechanical cable car — Powell-Hyde line from Powell St to Fisherman's Wharf.
The cable car costs $8 per ride. Board at the terminus (Powell & Market) rather than mid-route to ensure a seat. The Powell-Hyde line (not Powell-Mason) gives the best views down to the bay.
🌙 Evening
North Beach and City Lights Bookstore
Columbus Ave, North Beach, San Francisco
North Beach is SF's Italian neighbourhood — City Lights (the 1953 Beat Generation bookshop that published Ginsberg's Howl), Vesuvio Saloon (the bar where Dylan Thomas and Jack Kerouac drank), and Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill with its 48 Art Deco murals.
The parrots of Telegraph Hill — a flock of wild cherry-headed conures — roost in the palms around Coit Tower at sunset. A SF phenomenon worth looking for.
🍽️ Meals
Sotto Mare, North Beach
Italian-American seafood · $60 · SF institution since 1908. The cioppino (San Francisco crab and seafood stew) is the definitive SF dish — messy, generous, and extraordinary.
Alcatraz & Golden Gate

🌅 Morning
Alcatraz Island tour
Pier 33, San Francisco
The federal penitentiary (1934–1963) is one of the most compelling historical sites in the US — the cellblock, the recreation yard, and the audio tour narrated by former prisoners and guards are genuinely affecting. Ferry departs Pier 33. Book at alcatrazcruises.com minimum 2 weeks ahead.
The evening tour (Thursday–Monday) adds a different atmosphere to the island — last ferry returns after dark. The audio guide is the best museum audio experience in California.
☀️ Afternoon
Golden Gate Bridge walk
Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco
The 1.7-mile walk across the bridge (one way, 30–40 minutes) is free and one of the great urban walks in the world. The bridge is open to pedestrians on the east walkway from 5am–9pm. The view from the Marin headlands (Battery Spencer) shows the bridge's full profile against the city.
Cycle across rather than walk — the bike lane is on the west side. Rent a bike from a Wharf operator (from $30/half day) and take the Golden Gate Bridge → Sausalito → ferry back to SF route.
🍽️ Meals
Zuni Café
California cuisine · $75 · The roast chicken for two (1-hour advance ordering, $75) is the most famous dish in San Francisco dining history. Order it. Book 2 weeks ahead.
Mission District & Haight-Ashbury
Friday, September 17
Est. spend
$165
per person
🌅 Morning
Mission District murals and La Taqueria
Mission District, San Francisco
The Mission is SF's Latino neighbourhood — 600+ murals covering buildings, alleys, and underpasses (Clarion Alley and Balmy Alley are the densest). The mission-style Dolores Park is the outdoor living room. La Taqueria is the best burrito in San Francisco (and therefore America).
La Taqueria on Mission Street: the carnitas burrito, no beans (traditionalists), with everything, grilled. $12. Non-negotiably the best burrito in SF.
☀️ Afternoon
Haight-Ashbury and the Summer of Love
Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco
The neighbourhood that was the epicentre of the 1960s counterculture — the corner of Haight and Ashbury is still a pilgrimage site. The Grateful Dead house, Janis Joplin's apartment, and the Head Shop on the main strip give historical context.
Amoeba Music on Haight Street is the world's largest independent music store (100,000 square feet). Even if you don't buy, browsing is extraordinary.
Twin Peaks viewpoint
Twin Peaks Blvd, San Francisco
The two 280m hills at the geographic centre of San Francisco give a 360° view of the entire Bay Area — Bay Bridge, Golden Gate, and the city grid below. Drive or take the 37 bus from Castro.
Go at sunset (around 7pm in September) for the city lighting up below you.
🍽️ Meals
State Bird Provisions
California cuisine · $80 · Dim sum style California cuisine — carts of small plates circulate the room. The guinea hen (state bird) is the house specialty. Book on Resy 30 days ahead.
Muir Woods & Sausalito
Saturday, September 18
Est. spend
$140
per person
🌅 Morning
Muir Woods ancient coastal redwoods
Muir Woods National Monument, Mill Valley, CA
18km north of the Golden Gate — a 560-acre grove of old-growth coastal redwood trees, the tallest living organisms on earth. The Cathedral Grove has redwoods 1,000+ years old and 70m tall. Shuttle from San Francisco required — personal vehicles restricted. Shuttle from Sausalito ferry terminal: $5.
Book timed entry at recreation.gov at least 2 weeks ahead ($3 reservation fee plus $15 park entry). The first entry slot (8am) gives the quietest forest atmosphere.
☀️ Afternoon
Sausalito waterfront village
Sausalito, Marin County, CA
The hillside village across the Golden Gate Bridge — houseboat communities, art galleries, and waterfront restaurants with views back to the San Francisco skyline. Ferry back to SF from the Sausalito Ferry Terminal ($15, Blue & Gold Fleet).
The ferry back to San Francisco (30 minutes) gives the best view of the city skyline and bay from the water — better than any cruise tour.
🍽️ Meals
Bar Bocce, Sausalito
Italian-Californian · $35 · Waterfront Sausalito restaurant with views of San Francisco. The pizza and Dungeness crab are excellent.
Napa Valley & Departure
Sunday, September 19
Est. spend
$230
per person
🌅 Morning
Napa Valley wine country
Napa Valley, Napa County, CA
Napa Valley is 90 minutes northeast of SF — the most famous wine region in the US. The main Highway 29 runs through the valley with estate wineries on both sides. Opus One, Mondavi, and Stag's Leap are the legendary names. For a better experience: Schramsberg (sparkling), Chateau Montelena (the Judgement of Paris Chardonnay), and Cakebread Cellars.
Book a designated driver wine tour from SF ($130–180 per person) or rent a car with one non-drinking driver. DUI laws are strict. The Sonoma Valley to the west is less crowded and equally good.
☀️ Afternoon
Return to SF and airport transfer
San Francisco International Airport
Return to San Francisco for 4pm, airport transfer by BART from Embarcadero or Powell for international departure.
🍽️ Meals
Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch, St Helena
Farm-to-table California · $55 · The best value full-service winery lunch in Napa. The fried chicken sandwich and the estate olive oil are outstanding.
Before you go
📅 Best time to visit
September–October: the famous San Francisco fog has cleared, temperatures are warm (20–25°C), and Napa is in harvest season. June–August is the peak tourist season but the fog can be oppressive. November–March is cool and rainy but cheaper.
🛂 Visas
ESTA required for citizens of ESTA-eligible countries (UK, EU, Australia, Japan) — apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov ($21, approved in minutes to days). US tourist visa (B-2) for other nationalities.
💱 Currency
US Dollar. San Francisco is one of the most expensive cities in the US — hotel rates are high, food is expensive by American standards, but there are excellent free experiences (parks, bridges, neighbourhoods).
🆘 Emergency numbers
police: 911
ambulance: 911
💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook
- The Karl the Fog Twitter account (@KarlTheFog) is a beloved SF institution — check it and weather.com before outdoor plans. The fog is real and can make a July afternoon feel like November.
- Coit Tower has 48 WPA murals inside (free viewing if you queue for the elevator) that are the finest New Deal public art in California.
