💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook
- Pack proper winter boots with good grip — Sapporo's snow and ice in February make slippery pavements a real risk.
- Book Snow Festival period accommodation and flights months ahead — this is Sapporo's busiest tourist season by far.
- Hokkaido seafood, dairy, and corn are considered some of the best in Japan — prioritise local specialties over generic options.
- The JR Rapid Airport train is far more reliable than buses during snowy weather — use it as the default airport transfer.
- Tipping is not customary or expected anywhere in Japan, including restaurants and taxis.
