10 Days in Sri Lanka: Ancient Kingdoms, Tea Hills & Whale Watching

Sri Lanka packs more variety into a smaller space than almost any country on earth — ancient rock fortresses, Buddhist temples, the world's most scenic railway journey, leopard safaris, and whale watching, all within a 4-hour drive of each other. The food (spiced curries, hoppers, kottu roti) is extraordinary and the people are among the warmest in Asia. Best November–April on the west and south coasts.

Friday, January 1

Est. spend

$100

per person

🌅 Morning

🚆

Arrive Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport

Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake

CMB is 30km north of Colombo. Uber to the city costs LKR 2,500–3,500 ($8–12). Official taxis at LKR 4,000–5,000. The expressway takes 45 minutes to Colombo. Many visitors continue directly to Colombo Fort or transit immediately to the hill country.

💡

Get a local SIM at the airport (Dialog or Mobitel) — LKR 500 ($1.70) for 5GB. Data is essential for navigation and Uber throughout Sri Lanka.

1.5h$10

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

Colombo Pettah Market and Gangaramaya Temple

Pettah and Gangaramaya Temple, Colombo

Pettah is Colombo's oldest market neighbourhood — a sensory overload of fabric shops, spice merchants, and street food stalls. The Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple complex on Beira Lake is the city's most important — the sacred Bodhi tree, museum of religious artefacts, and the annual Navam Perahera procession in February.

💡

The Colombo National Museum (Bandaranaike Museum) has an excellent collection of Kandyan royal regalia and ancient Sri Lankan art. Entry LKR 500 ($1.70).

Est. spend

$100

🌅 Morning

🚆

Colombo to Sigiriya drive (driver hire)

Colombo → Dambulla → Sigiriya

Sigiriya is 4.5 hours north of Colombo. Hire a private driver for the full Sri Lanka trip (recommended) — a knowledgeable English-speaking driver with a comfortable car costs $40–60/day and handles all transport, timing, and local knowledge. The drive passes Dambulla with its cave temples (worth stopping).

💡

Hire a driver through your first hotel or a reputable agency. The same driver for the full trip (10 days) builds familiarity and makes everything easier. Budget $450–550 for 10 days including fuel.

5h$50

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

Dambulla Cave Temple stop

Dambulla, Central Province, Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's largest and best-preserved cave temple complex — 5 caves with 153 Buddha statues and 2,100 square metres of murals painted between the 1st century BC and the 18th century. The Royal Rock Temple of Dambulla is a UNESCO site. Entry LKR 3,000 ($10).

💡

Shoes must be removed before the temple entrance (even on the approach path). White socks are useful on the hot stone. The monkeys on the approach path will steal water bottles.

2h$10

🍽️ Meals

🌙

Sigiriya Rest House

Sri Lankan · $20 · The old government rest house near Sigiriya Rock. Good rice and curry buffet with traditional Sri Lankan dishes.

Day 3

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Sunday, January 3

Est. spend

$80

per person

🌅 Morning

🏛️

Sigiriya Rock Fortress at dawn

Sigiriya, Matale District, Sri Lanka

The 5th-century rock fortress (Lion Rock) rises 200m from the jungle — a palace complex built by King Kasyapa on an inselberg. The climb (1,200 steps) passes the Mirror Wall inscriptions (the oldest known graffiti in South Asia, 8th century), the famous Apsara fresco galleries (14 of 500 original frescoes), and the Lion's Paw entrance. Entry $30.

💡

Arrive at 7am when the site opens — the rock gets very hot and crowded by 10am. The view from the summit over the jungle is extraordinary. The wasp nests in the climb section are real — hornets attack if disturbed. Stay quiet and move past them slowly.

3h$30

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

Pidurangala Rock opposite Sigiriya

Pidurangala, Sigiriya

The lesser-known adjacent rock with the best view OF Sigiriya from the same height — often more impressive than the view FROM Sigiriya. Entry LKR 500 ($1.70). Easier climb, fewer crowds, better photos.

💡

Sunrise from Pidurangala looking at Sigiriya illuminated by dawn is the classic Sri Lanka photograph. Requires 4:45am arrival.

2h$2

🍽️ Meals

🌙

Jetwing Lake hotel restaurant

Sri Lankan · $30 · The Jetwing Lake property near Sigiriya has an excellent evening rice and curry spread with local vegetables.

Day 4

Kandy — Temple of the Tooth

Monday, January 4

Est. spend

$90

per person

🌅 Morning

🏛️

Drive to Kandy via Matale Spice Gardens

Sigiriya → Matale → Kandy

Kandy is 2 hours from Sigiriya via Matale. The drive passes spice gardens (cinnamon, cardamom, pepper — the spices that brought Arab, Portuguese, Dutch, and British traders to Sri Lanka). Stop at a government-certified spice garden for a free tour.

💡

Cinnamon is Sri Lanka's most important spice and uniquely different from the cassia sold in Western supermarkets as 'cinnamon.' Buy true Ceylon cinnamon (quills, not powder) at the government spice gardens for genuine quality.

3h$20

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

Temple of the Tooth Relic (Dalada Maligawa)

Sri Dalada Veediya, Kandy

The most sacred Buddhist site in Sri Lanka — the temple that houses the tooth relic of the Buddha (brought to Sri Lanka in the 4th century AD). The golden tooth casket is not visible (it's inside 7 nested caskets) but the temple complex, the puja ceremonies (6:30am, 9:30am, 6:30pm), and the evening procession are extraordinary. Entry LKR 2,000 ($7).

💡

Attend the 6pm puja (daily ceremony) — it includes drumming, conch shells, dancers, and the procession of the tooth relic to the public viewing area. The most atmospheric experience in Kandy.

2h$7
🌊

Kandy Lake and Royal Palace gardens

Kandy Lake, Kandy

The artificial lake created by the last Kandyan king (1807) is the centre of the city — the surrounding palace complex and Bahiravokanda Buddha (a 27m white Buddha on a hill) give the best elevated views. Evening stroll with locals.

1.5hFree

🏛️

World's most scenic train: Kandy to Ella

Kandy Railway Station → Ella

The 8703 train from Kandy to Ella (7 hours, 170km) is consistently listed as one of the most beautiful railway journeys in the world — climbing through tea plantations, past waterfalls, through cloud forests, and across viaducts. Second class seats have open windows. First class is unreserved in practice.

💡

Book 2nd class 'reserved' tickets (LKR 490/$1.70) at Kandy station at least 3 days ahead or on the government railway website (exporail.lk). The popular left-side seats face the valley during the descent. Stand at the open carriage door between stations — the traditional Sri Lanka train photo.

7h$5

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

Arrive Ella, Nine Arches Bridge

Nine Arches Bridge, Ella, Badulla District

The Nine Arches Bridge (1921) — built during British colonial rule without a single piece of steel (only stone, brick, and mortar) — is Sri Lanka's most photographed structure. Best photographed from above when the blue train passes (twice daily). The walk to the bridge through tea estates takes 30 minutes from Ella town.

💡

Train times from Ella station: check the schedule and be at the bridge vantage point (Demodara Road viewpoint) 15 minutes before the train passes. The bridge is free to access and walk across.

The most accessible hike from Ella — a 3.7km well-maintained path through tea estates to the summit (1,141m). 360° views of the surrounding hills, valleys, and tea plantations. 2 hours round trip. Free.

💡

Go at 6am for sunrise views before the cloud builds. The tea pickers work from dawn — the sight of women in colourful saris picking tea against the mist is extraordinary.

🏛️

Ravana Waterfall and Ella Rock

Ella Rock / Ravana Falls, Badulla District

Ravana Falls (25m cascade) is 6km from Ella on the Wellawaya Road — the largest waterfall visible from the main road in Sri Lanka. Ella Rock (2km from Ella town, 3-hour return) requires following the railway track north and then climbing through jungle — a more challenging hike with the best views in the region.

💡

The Ella Rock trail is not signposted — hire a local guide from Ella town (LKR 1,500/$5) to ensure you take the correct path at the railway junction.

🌅 Morning

🚆

Ella to Yala via Wellawaya and Kataragama

Ella → Wellawaya → Kataragama → Yala

3-hour drive from Ella to the Yala sector — passing the Kataragama sacred city (major Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage site). Kataragama's main shrine is active with daily rituals — a remarkable atmosphere even on a short visit.

💡

Stop at Kataragama for 30 minutes — the Maha Devale shrine and the puja ceremony visible from outside the inner sanctum is genuinely affecting. Remove shoes before the temple complex.

Yala National Park afternoon safari

Yala National Park, Block 1, Hambantota District

💡

The chances of seeing a leopard in Yala are higher than anywhere in Asia — estimated 1:1.5 visits. Dawn drives are best. Insist on Block 1 (not the surrounding wildlife sanctuary) for the best sightings.

Blue whale watching — Mirissa

Mirissa Harbour, Matara District

The deep water channel south of Mirissa is the feeding ground for blue whales (the world's largest animal) from November to April. A 4–6 hour boat trip departs at 6:30am. Blue whale sightings: 85–90% success rate in season. Sperm whales, spinner dolphins, and occasionally killer whales are also present.

💡

Book with a licensed operator — Raja and the Whales or Deepblue are reputable. Bring sea sickness medication if sensitive — the channel swell can be significant. Hydrophones let you hear the whales calling.

The fort has gentrified significantly — excellent boutique hotels and restaurants inside the walls. The Gallery Café for coffee and the Fortaleza restaurant for lunch are both excellent.

Before you go

📅 Best time to visit

November–April is the dry season for the west and south coasts (where most attractions are). May–October brings the south-west monsoon — roads can be difficult and whale watching pauses. The hill country (Kandy, Ella) has a different pattern and is good year-round except June–July.

🛂 Visas

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) required for most nationalities — apply at eta.gov.lk ($40 USD). Single-entry, 30 days. Apply at least 3 days before travel.

💱 Currency

Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). ~295 LKR per USD. Sri Lanka is excellent value — a full meal is LKR 400–800 ($1.40–2.70). Hire a driver for the full trip: it's the single best investment (~$50/day all-in) for maximum flexibility and local knowledge.

🆘 Emergency numbers

police: 119

ambulance: 110

tourist police: (011) 2421052

💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook

  • Rice and curry is not a dish — it's a concept. A Sri Lankan rice and curry means a mound of rice surrounded by 5–8 individual curries (dhal, coconut sambol, fish ambul thiyal, jack fruit, etc.). It's eaten by mixing with your right hand.
  • Tuk-tuks are everywhere and cheap. Negotiate the price before getting in. Uber-style tuk-tuk apps (PickMe) are now available in Colombo and major towns.
  • The train network is scenic but slow. For long distances (Colombo to Galle: 2.5h by train, 1.5h by car on the expressway), weigh the scenic experience against time.
