Arrival & Grindelwald Orientation Walk
Saturday, July 10
Est. spend
$255
per person
🌅 Morning
Fly into Zurich or Bern, train to Grindelwald
Grindelwald Bahnhof, Grindelwald
Grindelwald is 3 hours from Zurich by InterCity train (change at Interlaken Ost). The scenic Bernese Oberland Railway from Interlaken takes 35 minutes through increasingly dramatic Alpine scenery. No hire car needed — the entire region runs on an exceptional rail and cable car network.
Buy a Swiss Half Fare Card (CHF 120, one month) before arriving — it cuts every train and cable car ticket by 50%, saving several hundred CHF over a week.
Check in and village walk
Grindelwald village centre
Grindelwald village sits at 1,034m in a glacially-carved valley directly below the north face of the Eiger. Walk the main street, identify the peaks above (Eiger left, Mönch centre, Jungfrau right), and book your Jungfraujoch visit for a clear-sky morning (check the weather app SRF MeteoSchweiz).
The Eiger Nordwand (north face) above the village has been called the most dangerous face in the Alps. The wall holds snow and ice year-round regardless of summer temperatures — binoculars make it extraordinary to watch.
☀️ Afternoon
Pfingstegg cable car + Baregg glacier viewpoint
Pfingstegg Gondola Station, Grindelwald
The Pfingstegg gondola (10 min walk from village) rises 500m to a terrace restaurant with a direct view of the Lower Grindelwald Glacier. The 45-minute walk to Baregg follows the glacier moraine and shows how dramatically the glacier has retreated since 1900 — powerful visual context for the week ahead.
The glacier viewpoint path is paved and well-maintained — gentle enough for the first day without taxing your legs before the week's main walks.
Gear check and supplies
Migros Grindelwald, Hauptstrasse
Migros supermarket in the village is the best value for trail supplies — energy bars, dried fruit, Swiss chocolate, and water. Intersport Grindelwald rents trekking poles if you don't have them. Break in your boots with the afternoon walk if they're new.
🌙 Evening
Dinner at Restaurant Onkel Tom's Hütte
Onkel Tom's Hütte, Grindelwald
Traditional Swiss mountain restaurant in the village — raclette (melted cheese scraped onto boiled potatoes, pickles, and onions) is the signature dish. The wood-panelled interior, cowbells on the wall, and local Rugenbrau beer make for an authentic first Swiss evening.
Raclette for two is served in rounds — the waiter scrapes successive half-wheels of cheese. Pace yourself for the first three rounds.
🍽️ Meals
Train station café or packed snack
Swiss café · $14 · Eat on the train if departing early.
Pfingstegg terrace restaurant
Swiss mountain food · $28 · Wurst with rösti or a käseschnitte (cheese toast). Worth eating here for the Eiger view.
Onkel Tom's Hütte
Swiss traditional · $65 · Raclette for two + Rugenbrau beer. Reserve the evening before arrival.

🌅 Morning
First gondola to Grindelwald-First (2,168m)
First Gondola Station, Grindelwald
The First gondola is a 30-minute ride from the edge of the village to 2,168m, with stunning views of the Wetterhorn and Schreckhorn opening progressively. The mountain station has a breakfast terrace where you can sit with coffee looking directly at the Eiger.
Go early (first gondola 08:30) to beat the tourist crowds and get the best morning light on the Eiger. The First Cliff Walk (suspension bridge and platform) is quietest before 10:00.
Bachalpsee mountain lake walk
Bachalpsee, above Grindelwald-First
The walk from First station to Bachalpsee takes 45 minutes on a well-marked path through Alpine meadows. The lake at 2,265m perfectly reflects the Schreckhorn and Finsteraarhorn on calm mornings — it's the most photographed viewpoint in the Bernese Oberland. Swim if brave (10°C).
The reflection is best in early morning before wind arrives. Bring a windproof layer — the exposed plateau is significantly colder than the valley even in summer.
☀️ Afternoon
First Cliff Walk suspension bridge
First Cliff Walk, Grindelwald-First Station
The First Cliff Walk extends along the cliffside from the gondola station — a series of walkways and a suspension footbridge built directly into the vertical cliff face with views straight down 1,000m to the valley. The 20-minute circuit is vertiginous and exhilarating.
Scooter descent from First (optional)
First Mountain Station, Grindelwald
Mountain scooters (small wheeled sledges operated with handlebars) are available at First for a downhill ride on gravel tracks. An alternative to walking down — fast, fun, and a different perspective on the valley. 8km descent, 20 minutes.
🌙 Evening
Fiescherblick Hotel terrace dinner
Hotel Fiescherblick, Grindelwald
The Fiescherblick hotel terrace has arguably the best Eiger view in the village — an unobstructed north face directly above your table at sunset. Order the Berner Platte (mixed meats and sausages on sauerkraut) or a simple fondue.
🍽️ Meals
First mountain station terrace
Swiss café · $18 · Coffee and pastry at 2,168m — expensive but extraordinary setting.
Bachalpsee lakeside packed lunch
Packed · $0 · Pack from Migros the night before — eating by the lake is the right choice.

Jungfraujoch — Top of Europe
Monday, July 12
Est. spend
$362

🌅 Morning
Jungfraujoch by rack railway (3,454m)
Jungfraujoch Station, 3,454m
The Jungfraujoch railway is the highest railway station in Europe, reached by the historic Jungfraubahn rack railway built 1896–1912. The journey from Grindelwald takes 2 hours through a tunnel drilled through the Eiger. At the top: the Aletsch Glacier (Europe's largest, 23km long), the Sphinx Observatory deck with 360° Alpine panoramas, and year-round snow fields.
Book the 08:00 first train to beat the day-tour groups from Interlaken (who arrive from 10:30). The summit is clearest in the morning — cloud often rolls in by early afternoon. Bring sunglasses (UV is extreme at altitude) and a warm jacket.
Aletsch Glacier walk and Sphinx Observatory
Jungfraujoch Top Station, Bernese Alps
From Jungfraujoch, walk onto the Aletsch Glacier in crampons (provided) or view it from the Sphinx deck at 3,571m. The scale is almost incomprehensible — a 23km river of ice flowing between mountain ranges. The Ice Palace (carved chambers inside the glacier) and the viewing platform are included in the railway ticket.
Altitude sickness is possible at 3,454m even for fit people — headache, nausea, and dizziness are common. Drink water, move slowly, and descend if you feel ill. Most people feel fine within 30 minutes of acclimatising.
☀️ Afternoon
Kleine Scheidegg stop — Eiger Nordwand at eye level
Kleine Scheidegg, Bernese Oberland
Descend by the Jungfraujoch railway to Kleine Scheidegg (2,061m) — the famous viewing station directly below the Eiger Nordwand. Sit on the terrace and look straight up at the north face. With binoculars you can occasionally see climbers on the face in summer.
The Eiger Trail (descent from Kleine Scheidegg to Grindelwald directly below the Nordwand, 2 hours) is one of the most dramatic walks in the Alps if you have the energy after Jungfraujoch.
Descent by Wengernalp Railway back to Grindelwald
Kleine Scheidegg → Grindelwald
The historic Wengernalp rack railway descends from Kleine Scheidegg through Alpine meadows back to Grindelwald. Sit on the right side descending for continuous Eiger views.
🌙 Evening
Restaurant Adler — cheese fondue evening
Restaurant Adler, Grindelwald
Cheese fondue (melted Gruyère and Emmental in white wine, eaten with bread cubes on long forks) is Switzerland's most social meal. Restaurant Adler in the village does the classic moitié-moitié (half-and-half cheese) recipe. Post-fondue tradition: a small glass of Kirsch (cherry schnapps) poured into the remaining pot.
The tradition says that whoever drops their bread in the fondue buys the next round of drinks. The pot develops a crispy browned crust at the bottom called la religieuse — scrape it out, it's the best part.
🍽️ Meals
Jungfraujoch summit restaurant
Swiss café · $20 · Coffee and breakfast at 3,454m — expensive (CHF 18 for a coffee) but once in a lifetime.
Kleine Scheidegg terrace restaurant
Swiss mountain · $30 · Suppe (soup) and Käseschnitten (melted cheese toast) — classic mountain lunch.
Restaurant Adler fondue
Swiss traditional · $70 · Fondue for two + Fendant white wine + Kirsch. Reserve same morning.
Lauterbrunnen Valley & Schilthorn
Tuesday, July 13
Est. spend
$315
per person
🌅 Morning
Train to Lauterbrunnen Valley
Lauterbrunnen village
Lauterbrunnen (15 minutes by train from Grindelwald via Interlaken) sits in a U-shaped glacial valley so deep and narrow that the walls rise 400m on both sides. There are 72 waterfalls in the valley, including the 297m Staubbach Falls which fall directly into the village from the cliff above. One of the most dramatic valley landscapes in Europe.
BASE jumpers use the Lauterbrunnen Valley year-round — the surrounding cliffs are famous for proximity wingsuit flying. You may see jumpers in summer.
Schilthorn cable car (2,970m) — Piz Gloria
Schilthorn Summit, 2,970m
The Schilthorn is reached by four successive cable car stages from Lauterbrunnen through Mürren village (car-free — it's magic). At the summit: Piz Gloria, the revolving restaurant used in the 1969 James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service. The 360° panorama from 2,970m covers 200 named peaks.
Have breakfast at the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant for the full Bond experience — the 360° revolution takes 55 minutes and the views are extraordinary. Mürren village (stop on the way down) is one of Switzerland's most beautiful car-free villages.
☀️ Afternoon
Mürren village walk and Allmendhubel flower park
Mürren village, Bernese Oberland
Mürren is a car-free village at 1,638m accessible only by cable car — no roads, no cars, just mountain paths and wooden chalets. The Allmendhubel funicular above the village reaches a flower meadow with views across to the Jungfrau. Walk back down to Mürren through wildflower paths.
Trümmelbach Falls
Trümmelbach Falls, Lauterbrunnen Valley
Trümmelbach Falls is a series of ten glacier waterfalls inside a mountain — accessible by lift and a series of tunnelled pathways through the rock. 20,000 litres per second of meltwater from the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau glaciers thunders through these underground chambers. A genuinely unique natural site.
Bring waterproofs — the spray inside the falls tunnels is significant. The noise is extraordinary — conversational speech is impossible inside.
🌙 Evening
Dinner back in Grindelwald — Zum Dorfkrug restaurant
Zum Dorfkrug, Grindelwald
Return to Grindelwald for dinner at Zum Dorfkrug — an atmospheric 18th-century farmhouse restaurant serving Bernese specialities: Berner Platte (sauerkraut piled with smoked pork, bacon, beef tongue, and sausages), Kalbsrahmgeschnetzeltes (veal in cream sauce), and local Appenzeller cheese.
🍽️ Meals
Piz Gloria revolving breakfast
Swiss café · $25 · Expensive but the revolving 360° view makes it worthwhile. Go for the breakfast service at 09:00.

Faulhorn Ridge Walk — The Alps at Their Best
Wednesday, July 14
Est. spend
$219
per person
🌅 Morning
First gondola + walk to Faulhorn summit (2,681m)
Faulhorn, Bernese Alps (2,681m)
The Faulhorn ridge walk is the finest day walk in the Bernese Oberland — the oldest mountain hotel in the Alps (Hotel Faulhorn, built 1832) sits on the summit at 2,681m. From First station, the walk climbs to Bachalpsee then continues along an exposed ridge to Faulhorn summit (2.5 hours). The 360° panorama includes the Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau, and Lake Brienz far below.
Start before 09:00 to reach the summit before afternoon cloud builds. The ridge path is exposed to wind — bring windproof jacket. In afternoon, thunderstorms are common July–August; be off the exposed ridge by 14:00.
Hotel Faulhorn summit coffee
Hotel Faulhorn, 2,681m
The Hotel Faulhorn (1832) is the oldest mountain hotel in the Alps, staffed by hosts who hike up every week with supplies. Sit on the summit terrace with coffee and take in the view of the Eiger and Lake Brienz 1,700m below. A bowl of soup here after the climb is one of the best meals in Switzerland.
☀️ Afternoon
Descent to Schynige Platte (1,967m)
Schynige Platte, Bernese Oberland
From Faulhorn, the descent to Schynige Platte takes 1.5 hours along a wide ridge path with continuous mountain views. Schynige Platte is the Botanical Alpine Garden (200 Alpine plant species) — worth 30 minutes. The rack railway from Schynige Platte descends to Wilderswil (Interlaken) in 50 minutes.
The Schynige Platte rack railway is included in the Swiss Half Fare Card. It only runs June–October — confirm the last departure time (usually 17:30) before you begin the descent.
Interlaken Ost afternoon — Lake Brienz boat cruise
Lake Brienz, Interlaken
From Wilderswil (Interlaken area), take the boat across Lake Brienz to Giessbach Falls — a series of waterfalls behind a Belle Époque hotel. The 1879 Grand Hotel Giessbach is now a protected monument; the boat-and-funicular combination from Brienz is excellent. Return to Grindelwald via Interlaken.
🌙 Evening
Recovery dinner — Bistro 1857 at Hotel Spinne
Hotel Spinne Bistro, Grindelwald
After the day's 6-hour walk, the Spinne hotel bistro is the classic Grindelwald après-hike destination — hearty portions, good Bernese red wine, and a menu that understands what walkers need after a long day. Rösti mit Ei (potato cake with fried egg) and a large Rugenbrau is the traditional order.
🍽️ Meals

🌅 Morning
Grindelwald Glacier Gorge (Gletscherschlucht)
Gletscherschlucht, Grindelwald
A short walk from the village, the Gletscherschlucht is a narrow gorge carved by the meltwater from the Upper Grindelwald Glacier. The walkway passes through tunnels and bridges over the rushing torrent — 45 minutes in total, dramatic and accessible. Excellent for photos.
The gorge is deepening year over year as the glacier retreats and the meltwater volume increases — a vivid climate demonstration.
Village market and souvenir shopping
Grindelwald village centre
Grindelwald's morning village market (Tuesdays and Fridays) sells local cheese, honey, carved wood, and textiles. The best Swiss chocolate shops are the Volg cooperative and the Chocolaterie on the main street. Ship purchases home from the post office — far cheaper than luggage fees.
☀️ Afternoon
Männlichen cable car + Royal Walk
Männlichen, 2,229m
The Männlichen gondola (from Grindelwald Grund station) reaches 2,229m in 30 minutes with extraordinary Eiger views. The Royal Walk — a 30-minute paved path to the Männlichen summit cross — is the most accessible high-altitude walk in the region and rewards with a 270° panorama that includes Wengen village below.
The Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg walk (1.5 hours, downhill and nearly flat) is one of Switzerland's most popular Alpine walks — magnificent panoramas, no technical difficulty.
Afternoon coffee in Wengen car-free village
Wengen village, Bernese Oberland
Descend from Männlichen to Wengen — another car-free mountain village at 1,274m, this one reachable only by the Wengernalp rack railway. Wengen has been attracting English visitors since Victorian times and has a uniquely traditional charm. Sit on a hotel terrace with the Jungfrau directly ahead.
🌙 Evening
Final Grindelwald dinner — Restaurant Chalet du Mouton
Chalet du Mouton, Grindelwald
The Chalet du Mouton does an excellent Raclette du Valais — the more intense version using Raclette du Valais AOP cheese, scraped onto potatoes and served with Valais cured meats and pickles. A proper celebration of Swiss mountain food on the penultimate evening.

Final Swiss breakfast and hotel check-out
Hotel, Grindelwald
A proper Swiss hotel breakfast (bread, cheese, cold cuts, soft-boiled egg, müesli, and strong coffee) eaten slowly while looking at the Eiger is the best possible way to close the week. Check out by 11:00.
Pack the night before to avoid a rushed morning.
☀️ Afternoon
