🌅 Morning
Arrive at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport
Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, Mascot
Sydney Airport (SYD) is 8km from the CBD. The Airport Link train takes 13 minutes to Central Station and costs A$19.60 ($13). Uber to the city centre costs A$35–45 ($23–30). The train is the best option during peak hours.
Load an Opal card at the airport newsagent for all public transport (trains, buses, ferries). Single journeys cost more without one.
☀️ Afternoon
Sydney Opera House — walk and guided tour
Bennelong Point, Sydney NSW 2000
Jørn Utzon's masterpiece is on a peninsula jutting into the harbour — walk all the way around it before going inside. The guided 1-hour tour covers the Concert Hall (the best acoustics in the Southern Hemisphere), the Joan Sutherland Theatre, and the story of how the shells were engineered. Tour: A$43 ($29).
Book the tour in advance online. Evening performances are the best way to experience the Opera House as it was meant — book a show at sydneyoperahouse.com.
The Rocks neighbourhood
The Rocks, Sydney NSW 2000
The original colonial settlement of Sydney — sandstone warehouses, narrow laneways, and a weekend market that fills the cobblestones. The Rocks is touristy but genuinely atmospheric. The Sydney Harbour Bridge towers above it.
The Rocks Discovery Museum (free) tells the full story of the Gadigal people who lived here and the first European settlement. One of the best free museums in Sydney.
🌙 Evening
Circular Quay sunset and harbour dinner
Circular Quay, Sydney
The best free view in Sydney is from Circular Quay at sunset — the Opera House, the Bridge, and the harbour all in one frame. Then dinner at one of the Quay-side restaurants.
🍽️ Meals
Quay Restaurant
Modern Australian · $120 · Peter Gilmore's flagship — regularly listed in the World's 50 Best. The Snow Egg dessert is the most famous dish in Australian fine dining. Book 2 months ahead.
Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk
Saturday, January 2
Est. spend
$190
per person
🌅 Morning
Bondi Beach morning swim
Bondi Beach, Sydney NSW 2026
Bondi is more beautiful than the hype suggests — a perfect arc of white sand, the iconic Icebergs pool built into the sea cliffs, and a professional lifeguard patrol that has operated since 1906. Swim between the flags (essential — the rips are dangerous outside them). The beach is free.
The Bondi Icebergs pool (A$9/$6) is the most iconic ocean pool in Australia — seawater, waves washing over the edge, and the beach behind you. Go before 9am.
☀️ Afternoon
Bondi to Coogee coastal walk
Starts at Notts Ave, Bondi Beach (Icebergs end)
The 6km cliff-top walk from Bondi to Coogee via Bronte, Clovelly, and Gordons Bay is one of the great free urban walks in the world. Sea cliffs, ocean pools, cemeteries, and the Sydney skyline behind you. Allow 2 hours walking; 3–4 with stops.
Walk south to north (Coogee to Bondi) if you want the better light for photos. Go on a weekday to avoid the crowds.
Coogee Beach and lunch
Coogee Beach, Sydney NSW 2034
The walk ends at Coogee Beach — calmer and less crowded than Bondi. The Coogee Bay Hotel has good food and direct beach views.
🌙 Evening
Surry Hills dinner
Surry Hills, Sydney NSW 2010
Surry Hills is Sydney's best food neighbourhood — dense with serious restaurants in terrace houses. Crown Street and Bourke Street are the main strips.
🍽️ Meals
Lox Stock & Barrel, Bondi
Café/Israeli · $22 · The best breakfast in Bondi. The shakshuka and smashed avo are both excellent. Arrives early to queue.
Porteño, Surry Hills
Argentine/South American · $65 · Buenos Aires meets Sydney. Whole-roasted pork and lamb on the wood-fired asador. Book 2 weeks ahead.
Manly Ferry & Northern Beaches
Sunday, January 3
Est. spend
$240
per person
🌅 Morning
Manly Ferry from Circular Quay
Circular Quay Ferry Terminal, Sydney
The 30-minute Manly Ferry is the best A$9 ($6) you'll spend in Sydney — a full harbour cruise passing the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, the naval base at Garden Island, and the sandstone headlands. Better than any tourist cruise at a fraction of the price.
Sit on the left side of the upper deck (port side) heading to Manly for the best Opera House photos.
Manly Beach and Corso
Manly, Sydney NSW 2095
Manly has a different character from Bondi — more relaxed, more family-oriented, and with a beautiful ocean swimming area. The Corso connects the harbour wharf to the ocean beach — lined with surf shops, cafés, and weekend markets.
North Head Sanctuary is a 2km walk from Manly town — a former quarantine station on sandstone cliffs with the best views of the harbour entrance. Free to walk.
☀️ Afternoon
Manly to Shelly Beach walk and snorkel
Shelly Beach, Manly NSW 2095
A 15-minute walk from Manly Beach leads to Shelly Beach — a marine reserve with clear water, abundant fish, and easy snorkelling from the shore. Rental gear from Manly Surf School for A$20 ($14).
Eastern Blue Groper, wobbegong sharks (harmless), and Port Jackson sharks are regulars here. Genuinely good snorkelling.
Ferry back and Darling Harbour walk
Barangaroo Reserve, Sydney
Return ferry to Circular Quay, then walk around Darling Harbour and the newly-developed Barangaroo Reserve — 15 hectares of public parkland on a sandstone headland with perfect views of the Harbour Bridge.
🌙 Evening
Harbour Bridge climb or Pylon Lookout
BridgeClimb Sydney, 3 Cumberland St, The Rocks
The BridgeClimb experience (A$230/$155) takes you to the summit arch of the Harbour Bridge for 360° views. If that's too expensive, the Pylon Lookout on the south-east pylon has similar views for A$19 ($13).
The dawn climb (6am departure) and dusk climb are the most popular. Book 2 weeks ahead. All loose items must be secured — everything goes in a provided suit.
🍽️ Meals
Hugo's Manly
Modern Australian · $40 · Beachfront location with excellent seafood and good cocktails. The Sydney rock oysters are the thing to order.
Blue Mountains Day Trip
Monday, January 4
Est. spend
$170
per person
🌅 Morning
Train to Katoomba
Sydney Central Station → Katoomba Station
The Blue Mountains are 110km from Sydney — a 2-hour train from Central Station to Katoomba (A$8.60/$6 each way). The train goes through the outer suburbs and then climbs into the sandstone canyon country of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area.
The Blue Mountains Explorer Bus (A$55/$37) runs a hop-on hop-off circuit from Katoomba Station connecting all major viewpoints. A much better option than renting a car.
Echo Point and the Three Sisters
Echo Point Rd, Katoomba NSW 2780
The Three Sisters rock formation rising from the Jamison Valley floor — one of Australia's most iconic images. The Grand Canyon walk (3km, 2.5 hours) starts from here and descends into the valley through rainforest.
The valley fog often fills in at dawn and burns off by 10am — arriving at Echo Point at sunrise is spectacular. Take the Giant Stairway down rather than the cable car for the full cliff experience.
☀️ Afternoon
Scenic World — Skyway and Railway
Scenic World, Violet St & Cliff Dr, Katoomba
Scenic World has four rides: the Scenic Skyway (glass floor gondola across the canyon), the Scenic Railway (steepest passenger railway in the world, 52° incline into the valley), the Scenic Walkway (2.4km rainforest boardwalk), and the Scenic Cableway back up. All-inclusive pass A$49 ($33).
The Scenic Railway is the experience — the initial descent is almost vertical through a mountain tunnel. Not for anyone uncomfortable with heights.
Katoomba town and Leura village
Katoomba–Leura, Blue Mountains
Katoomba has good cafés and an eclectic antique and art scene. The walk to Leura (2km) is pleasant — a genteel village with excellent gardens and the Leura Cascades picnic area.
🌙 Evening
Return to Sydney and Kings Cross / Potts Point dinner
Potts Point, Sydney
The train back arrives in Central Station at around 6pm. Potts Point (adjacent to Kings Cross) is Sydney's most interesting dining neighbourhood — Elizabeth Bay Road and Macleay Street are the best strips.
🍽️ Meals
Silks Brasserie, Leura
Modern Australian · $35 · Best restaurant in the Blue Mountains. The kangaroo fillet is reliably excellent and worth trying if you haven't yet.
Taronga Zoo, Paddington & Departure
Tuesday, January 5
Est. spend
$165
per person
🌅 Morning
Taronga Zoo — first ferry
Bradleys Head Rd, Mosman NSW 2088
Taronga is the only zoo in the world with a natural amphitheatre of harbour and city behind every enclosure. The ferry from Circular Quay includes zoo entry (combo ticket). Koalas, kangaroos, platypus (rare to see), wombats, and Tasmanian devils — plus international collection. Open from 9:30am.
The Sky Safari cable car across the zoo shows the full harbour panorama. Take it first thing for the best light on the Opera House/Bridge view.
☀️ Afternoon
Paddington and Oxford Street
Oxford St, Paddington NSW 2021
Paddington is Sydney's most beautiful residential neighbourhood — Victorian terrace houses with iron lacework balconies, the Saturday Paddington Markets (design, fashion, food), the Australian Centre for Photography, and the best independent clothing boutiques in the city.
Paddington Markets runs every Saturday 10am–4pm in the grounds of Paddington Uniting Church. One of the best weekly markets in Sydney.
Airport transfer
Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport
Allow 2.5 hours before departure. The Airport Link train from Central takes 13 minutes. Uber from Paddington costs A$30–40 ($20–27).
🍽️ Meals
Bills, Paddington
Modern Australian · $25 · Bill Granger invented the word 'brunch' in Australia. The ricotta hotcakes and scrambled eggs are still the benchmark 25 years on.
Before you go

💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook
- The NSW TrainLink intercity trains are cheap and scenic — the Blue Mountains, Hunter Valley, and Central Coast are all reachable for under A$15 each way.
- Sydney rock oysters are specific to NSW waters and distinctly better than Pacific oysters — order them at every opportunity. The best are from Merimbula and Coffin Bay.
- Sun protection is not optional in Sydney — UV levels regularly hit 12+ (extreme) in summer. SPF 50+, hat, and rashie for beach days.
- The Manly Ferry is the best value transport experience in Sydney. The BridgeClimb is genuinely one of the best experiences in Australia — if budget allows, do it at sunset.
- Sydney has a good coffee culture centred in Surry Hills, Newtown, and Potts Point. Flat whites, not lattes — order accordingly.
