🌅 Morning
Arrive at Paro International Airport (PBH) and transfer to Thimphu
Paro International Airport
Bhutan's only international airport sits in a dramatic Himalayan valley; a scenic drive of about 1.5 hours along the river leads to the capital, Thimphu.
Your licensed Bhutanese guide and driver, mandatory under Bhutan's tourism policy, will meet you directly at the airport — all logistics are pre-arranged through your tour operator.
☀️ Afternoon
Buddha Dordenma statue
Buddha Dordenma, Kuensel Phodrang, Thimphu
A colossal 51.5-metre gilded bronze Buddha statue overlooking the Thimphu valley, housing over 100,000 smaller Buddha statues inside its base.
Visit in the late afternoon for soft light over the statue and sweeping views across the entire Thimphu valley.
🌙 Evening
Welcome dinner of Bhutanese cuisine
Thimphu town centre
A first taste of Bhutan's signature ema datshi (chili and cheese stew) alongside red rice and other regional dishes at a traditional Thimphu restaurant.
Bhutanese food is intensely spicy by design — ask for a milder version if chili isn't to your taste, as alternatives are usually available.

🌅 Morning
Tashichho Dzong
Tashichho Dzong, Thimphu
A grand fortress-monastery on the banks of the Wang Chhu river, serving as the seat of Bhutan's government and the summer residence of the Je Khenpo, the chief abbot.
The dzong is generally open to visitors only in the late afternoon when government offices close — your guide will time the visit accordingly.
☀️ Afternoon
National Memorial Chorten and Folk Heritage Museum
National Memorial Chorten, Thimphu
A whitewashed Buddhist stupa built in memory of Bhutan's third king, followed by a museum recreating traditional rural Bhutanese farmhouse life.
Locals circle the chorten clockwise while spinning prayer wheels — joining respectfully is welcomed.
🌙 Evening
Thimphu weekend market and dinner
Centenary Farmers Market, Thimphu
A lively market where farmers from across the valley sell produce, cheese, and incense, followed by dinner at a local Thimphu restaurant.
Sample fresh yak cheese and Bhutanese red rice products, distinctive souvenirs not found outside the region.

🌅 Morning
Drive over Dochula Pass to Punakha
Dochula Pass, en route to Punakha
A scenic 3-hour mountain drive crosses Dochula Pass at 3,100m, marked by 108 memorial chortens and, on clear days, sweeping Himalayan peak views.
Stop for tea at the pass — the chorten viewpoint is one of the most photographed spots on Bhutan's main highway.
☀️ Afternoon
Punakha Dzong
Punakha Dzong, Punakha
Widely considered Bhutan's most beautiful fortress, built at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, and the site of royal wedding ceremonies and the country's most important religious relics.
Cross the long traditional cantilever bridge leading to the dzong slowly — it offers some of the best photo angles of the fortress against the river.
🌙 Evening
Drive back to Thimphu and dinner
Thimphu town centre
Return over Dochula Pass to Thimphu in the early evening, followed by a relaxed dinner back in the capital.

Tiger's Nest Hike & Departure
Saturday, October 30
Est. spend
$350
per person
🌅 Morning
Hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery)
Paro Taktsang, Paro Valley
A steep but unforgettable hike to a monastery clinging to a sheer cliff face 900m above the Paro valley floor, one of the most sacred sites in the Himalayan Buddhist world.
Start early to avoid midday heat and crowds; a halfway cafeteria offers a good rest stop, and mules are available partway for those who need them.
☀️ Afternoon
Paro town and Rinpung Dzong
Rinpung Dzong, Paro
A relaxed afternoon in Paro town, with a stop at Rinpung Dzong, another striking fortress-monastery overlooking the valley, before transferring to the airport.
Your legs will likely be tired from the Tiger's Nest hike — this stop is intentionally gentle.
🌙 Evening
Transfer to Paro International Airport
Paro International Airport
Allow about 2 hours before departure given Bhutan's dramatic mountain approach, which requires specially trained pilots and good visibility.

Before you go
📅 Best time to visit
March–May and September–November offer the clearest skies and best mountain visibility (10-20°C), ideal for the Tiger's Nest hike and photography. Summer brings monsoon rain; winter is cold but very clear.
🛂 Visas
All tourists (except Indian, Bangladeshi, and Maldivian nationals) must book through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator and pay a mandatory Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of $100 USD per person per night as of recent policy, which funds free healthcare, education, and environmental conservation. A visa is arranged by the operator and approved before arrival — independent travel is not permitted.
💱 Currency
Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN), pegged 1:1 to the Indian Rupee, which is also widely accepted. Most costs (accommodation, meals, guide, transport) are bundled into the tour package; carry cash only for souvenirs and tips.
🆘 Emergency numbers
police: 113
ambulance: 112
💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook
- Bhutan's high-value, low-volume tourism model means a licensed guide and pre-arranged itinerary are mandatory — independent backpacking-style travel is not an option.
- The Sustainable Development Fee directly funds Bhutan's free healthcare and education systems — it is considered a meaningful contribution rather than simply a tourist tax.
- Dress modestly when visiting dzongs and monasteries — long sleeves and trousers/skirts below the knee are required, and a traditional scarf (kabney) may be needed for certain sites.
- The Tiger's Nest hike gains significant elevation — those not acclimatized to altitude should pace themselves and stay hydrated.
- Photography is often restricted inside dzong and monastery interiors — always check with your guide before taking photos of religious artifacts.
