Before you go

📅 Best time to visit

June–September gives the best weather for lake swimming and Alpine day trips, with mountain railways and cable cars at full operation. Winter is excellent for nearby ski resorts but the city itself is best in summer.

🛂 Visas

Switzerland is in the Schengen Area despite not being an EU member. EU citizens need only a national ID card. UK, US, Canadian, Australian, NZ citizens: visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period across all Schengen countries.

💱 Currency

Swiss Franc (CHF), not Euro. Cards are widely accepted, including contactless on public transit. Zurich is consistently ranked among the most expensive cities in the world — budget significantly more than for most European destinations.

🆘 Emergency numbers

police: 117

ambulance: 144

💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook

  • Public lake and river swimming ('Badis') is a genuine, beloved local tradition in summer — clean, central, and far cheaper than most tourist activities.
  • A Swiss Travel Pass is worth considering if visiting multiple cities or doing several mountain excursions — it covers most trains, buses, and many cable cars.
  • Switzerland is not in the EU and uses the Swiss Franc, not the Euro — confirm exchange rates before budgeting, as costs run notably higher than neighbouring countries.
  • Bring a warm layer for any mountain excursion (Rigi, Pilatus, or similar) even in summer — temperatures at altitude are significantly cooler than in the city.
  • Tipping is not obligatory in Switzerland — service is included in the bill by law, though rounding up small amounts is appreciated.
